Henricopolis Happenings A publication of the Henricopolis Soil & Water Conservation District January 2016 Virginia Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts honors Henricopolis Associate Director Congratulations to Henricopolis Associate Director, Terri Higgins! The Senior Human Resource Analyst for Henrico County volunteers her time to serve as an Associate Director for Henricopolis and has done an enormous amount of work for the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in the area of personnel and operations. For that work, Terri was awarded the E.C. Compton Outstanding Associate Director Award at the VASWCD Annual Meeting on December 8, 2015. Henricopolis Welcomes New Directors James Beckley, Nicole Anderson Ellis and Tom Herbert were elected to the Henricopolis Board of Directors on November 3, 2015. They took their Oath of Office for their four year term in the County Manager’s Office on December 15, 2015. Henricopolis is composed of a five member Board of Directors. Three Directors are elected and two are appointed. Henricopolis also enjoys the support of numerous Associate Directors appointed for one-year terms by the Chair of the Board. Herb Dunford Honored By Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Board Longtime Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Board member, Herb Dunford was recognized during the Board’s December 9, 2015 meeting. Mr. Dunford was appointed to the Board in March 1999 by Governor Jim Gilmore and served until September 2002. Governor Bob McDonnell appointed him again in September 2011 until December 2015. Herb served as Chairman of the Soil and Water Conservation Board from September 2012 to December 2015. Stoneman Staff Charlie Lively (District Manager) Lindy Durham (Education Specialist) Stacey Heflin (Conservation Specialist) 2015 Conservation Poster Contest Winners Each year Henricopolis Soil and Water Conservation District sponsors a Conservation Poster Contest open to all students in Henrico County. The poster contest provides students with an opportunity to share their thoughts about soil, water and related natural resources through art. In 2015, the poster contest theme was “Local Heroes, Your Hardworking Pollinators”. Henricopolis staff visited classrooms throughout the county to inspire students along that theme. As a result, we received 297 entries from students all over Henrico County! A winner was selected in each age category. Please join us in congratulating this year’s winners! Abby Leffler (Grades 4-6), India Smith (Grades 10-12) and Aminah Stevens (Grades 7-9).ztyn 2015 Henrico Conservation Education Teachers of the Year Henricopolis is pleased to recognize Eric Beyers and Thomas Tourje as our 2015 Conservation Education Teachers of the Year. Mr. Beyers teaches Earth Science, Biology, Environmental Sci- ence and Oceanography at Highland Springs High School. Mr. Tourje teaches 6th grade Earth Sci- ence at Hungary Creek Middle School. Both teachers have been enthusiastic participants in the Henricopolis Youth Education programs.
