  • CYPRUS Cyprus in Your Heart
CYPRUS Cyprus in your Heart Life is the Journey That You Make It It is often said that life is not only what you are given, but what you make of it. In the beautiful Mediterranean island of Cyprus, its warm inhabitants have truly taken the motto to heart. Whether it’s an elderly man who basks under the shade of a leafy lemon tree passionately playing a game of backgammon with his best friend in the village square, or a mother who busies herself making a range of homemade delicacies for the entire family to enjoy, passion and lust for life are experienced at every turn. And when glimpsing around a hidden corner, you can always expect the unexpected. Colourful orange groves surround stunning ancient ruins, rugged cliffs embrace idyllic calm turquoise waters, and shady pine covered mountains are brought to life with clusters of stone built villages begging to be explored. Amidst the wide diversity of cultural and natural heritage is a burgeoning cosmopolitan life boasting towns where glamorous restaurants sit side by side trendy boutiques, as winding old streets dotted with quaint taverns give way to contemporary galleries or artistic cafes. Sit down to take in all the splendour and you’ll be made to feel right at home as the locals warmly entice you to join their world where every visitor is made to feel like one of their own. 2 Beachside Splendour Meets Countryside Bliss Lovers of the Mediterranean often flock to the island of Aphrodite to catch their breath in a place where time stands still amidst the beauty of nature.

  • Network Analysis of Crusader Fortifications and Settlements in the Kyrenia
Defend Your Coast: Network Analysis of Crusader Fortifications and Settlements in the Kyrenia Region of Cyprus By Tyler Martin Caldwell March 2019 Director of Thesis: Dr. David Stewart Major Department: Program in Maritime Studies, Department of History The Mediterranean island of Cyprus is situated at the crossroads of the Near East and the Aegean Civilizations. During the Middle Ages, Cyprus experienced raids that would devastate the coastal landscape. Coastal towns and villages were destroyed, and many of them never rebuilt. Fortifications were constructed to defend the coastline from raiders and potential invaders. Scholars believe that during times of heavy raiding coastal settlements are abandoned in favor of inland settlements. This theory has not been tested using Geographic Information System (GIS). This study used GIS to test the area of influence raiders could exert inland during a raid. Based on past research the extent of influence was determined to be 3000 m inland. The Network Analyst tool was used to determine the shortest routes raiders and defenders took to reach undefended villages and churches. The time needed for defenders and attackers to reach sites was determined using a hiking calculator. Based on the results of the test the majority of sites are situated outside the range of raiders influence. Distr, SECURITY GENERAL s/11459 COUNCIL 19 August 1974 ORIGINAL: ENGLISH LETTER DATED 18 AUGUST 1974 FROM THE PERMANENTREPRESENTATIVE OF GREECE TO THE UNITED NATIONS ADDRESSEDTO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL The Government of Turkey officially announced acceptance of the cease-fire in Cyprus called by Security Council resolutions 353 (19741, 354 (1974), 355 (1974), 357 (1974), 358 (1974) and 359 (1974). The cease-fire was to be effective at 1200 Cyprus time, Friday, 16 August 1974. The Government of Cyprus accepted this cease-fire by an official announcement of its Acting President, Mr. G. Clerides. In the course of 27 days it was the third time the Turkish Government was accepting a cease-fire called by the Security Council, only to violate it. In spite of the fact that this last Turkish announcement was accompanied by a declaration of the Turkish Prime Minister according to which "all Turkish military goals on the island have already been achieved", new fighting erupted today and new Turkish advances are reported in the island. In view of this chronic situation, I thought it advisable to procure the Council, through Your Excellency, with a compound list of Turkish violations since the first cease-fire was accepted by the Turkish Government, effective 22 July, at 1400 hou&-s Greenwich time, two days after the Security Council called for it: -Violations after the cease-fire of 22 July 1974 22 July: At 4.4.5 ~.m. LT, units of the Greek contingent were fired at in Chati by Turkish jets. At 4.4,5 p.m. LT, units of the Greek contingent were fired at at the Trahona (Nicosia) by Twkish aircraft.

  • Settlement Hierarchy and the Location of Alashiya on Cyprus
UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI _____________ , 20 _____ I,______________________________________________, hereby submit this as part of the requirements for the degree of: ________________________________________________ in: ________________________________________________ It is entitled: ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ Approved by: ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ Settlement Hierarchy and the Location of Alashiya on Cyprus A thesis submitted to the Division of Research and Advanced Studies of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In the Department of Classics 2003 by Kristopher Mark Armstrong B.A., University of Ottawa, 2000 Committee Chair: Gisela Walberg Abstract This thesis investigates the socio-political character of Late Bronze Age (LBA) Cyprus during the sixteenth to fourteenth centuries BC primarily from an archaeological point of view. Past theories concerning this subject suggest that a centralized political authority ruled Cyprus during this time period. Such suggestions are used to support the hypothesis that Cyprus was Alashiya (a kingdom mentioned in contemporary fourteenth century texts from various kingdoms). While it is the general assumption of scholars that the two were universal equivalents, there is no concrete evidence for such an interpretation. Enkomi, an LBA site, has been used to support the idea that Cyprus entered an early form of statehood beginning in the LBA. The supposedly large extent of the settlement, the wealth of its archaeological remains, and its metallurgical facilities are said to suggest that it was the capital of Alashiya. While this theory seems possible, a number of other LBA cities existed that appear to have been equivalent, or even superior, to Enkomi in these terms.
