Less than 60days to Raffa Open 2018!

Less than sixty days and counting until the 11th Australian Raffa Bocce Open Championship gets underway in Liverpool, Sydney.

The best of the best Raffa Bocce players from Adelaide, Mt Gambier, Melbourne, Regional Victoria and Sydney will be at the Liverpool Catholic Club to win the prize, and unlike in years past, participants will have an opportunity on the Friday before the championship, to get first hand training by International Australian Coach Franco Fava.

Bocce Australia has arranged for Franco Fava to be in Sydney three days prior to the start of the Championship to provide Referee training and special training for Raffa players interested in skilling up on the finer points of the game. Training morning and afternoon sessions will be held at the Liverpool Catholic Club. Session times to be publicised in January.

Bocce Australia joins with Liverpool Catholic Club, NSW Bocce Federation, Australian Sports Commission, CBI (Confederation Internationale Bocce) and Confederation Mondiale des Sports de (C.M.S.B.), in promoting this successful annual bocce championship!

Raffa bocce is an exciting fast paced sport, played with coloured unbiased bowls which the player can bowl or shoot to knock the opponent’s bowl away and make a point close to the jack, or bounce the bowl off the side boards for a placement. Some 70 plus countries on 6 continents regularly compete in world titles including the current team and singles titleholders, Argentina, Switzerland and Italy!

This year the ACHPER (the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation) held it’s sports conference at the Monash University, Melbourne. A wide cross section of sports as well as many presenters from many professional sporting organisations & businesses were present making this another successful promotion for all sports.

This conference was targeting Schools and lots of teachers from all schools were present. Bocce was part of the Target sports group which was the brainchild of Annie Kay, Professional Learning Officer, ACHPER Victoria Branch.

All teachers who attended the sessions commented that it was good to have a grouping as the Target sports, as it encompassed all the key elements to teach students in the Fundamental Movement Skills. From prep to year 8 the movement concepts (elements of movement such as effort, space and pathways) and game strategies required to roll, throw or strike an object at a target are fundamental skills taught for this age group.

From L-R: Frank Funari from Bocce at ACHPER with Tenpin and Lawn Bowls presenters.

Although this conference was specific to Victorian PE teachers and schools, The impetus to spread the learnings to all others states was a key motivator for this ACHPER conference.

Bernie Holland , Professional Learning Manager, (ACHPER) who presented at the Bocce Australia Junior Development Workshop, in August, was keen to get bocce at the conference & glad that we were part of the target sports group. He believes that we have a good product and one that is ideal for primary to early age secondary children.

In the Target sports sessions, over 30 schools come along to the learn and see the bocce demonstration. They were all keen to get a copy of the Bocce SEPEP program and even more keener to see the new program when Bocce Australia launches the program next February.

On demonstration was the OZ Bocce /Bocce Smash format of the game which they loved especially for the school children aged from 6yrs – 16yrs. Feedback from most attendees was very positive, especially when they learnt of the Throwing events.

Overall the demonstration sessions were all well received with lots of enthusiasm by the many PE teachers than came along to experience bocce.

The success will be realised once we start receiving the requests.

Going by the feedback, expect to get lots of requests for school bocce in 2018.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2018

In response to requests over the years from many of the players, Bocce Australia is excited to announce the launch of a new Club competition for 2018.

Designed to increase player skills, boost inter-club competition and gain wider member engagement, the Top Club Championship will take place in each participating State, which has 2 or more clubs or teams competing. The winning Club in each state will be eligible to compete at the National Club Championship to determine the Champion Australian Bocce Club or Team for 2018.

As an incentive for the first year, Bocce Australia will award a ‘Wild Card’ entry to all Clubs that win their respective State Championship & come to compete at the National Club Championship to also qualify compete in the 2018 Senior Men & Women Australian Championships.

How it works For a club to be eligible for the Top Club competition, it must have at minimum four players and can be mixed Men, Women and Junior players aged 14+. • All players and Officials must be Bocce Members. • Competing Clubs or Teams must be registered and affiliated to the State Bocce Federation • Each team to comprise a minimum of 4 players or up to a maximum of 9 players, that are drawn from the pool of club bocce members. • All six Bocce disciplines are played—Singles, Doubles, Bowl/Throw, Precision, Progressive & Rapid Relay Throw. • Teams can comprise of Men, Women and Juniors (14+years of age and must be from the same Club or Registered Team. • Teams must have a Captain or coach/manager, preferably non-playing. • It is up to the Captain or Coach/Manager to select the team for each Game Day competition from the pool of Club/Team Players. • Players Under 18 who participate, by way of loan, to a club can do so, after agreement signed by the player and the State Federation and Club/Team.

Several details are yet to be finalised and Bocce Australia has more meetings planned for comings months to finalise the format.

It’s understood the first edition of the league will be a condensed format and will run alongside the existing State competitions from February to April.

It’s seen as the first step towards a National Club Championship and it’s anticipated the length of the tournament and number of teams will expand over the coming years. In years past, gaps in the player pathway have led to some elite players not having sufficient competition and as a consequence players leave the game entirely for years on end.

BOCCE NEWS BITS

Bocce Australia goes digital using Zoom Video conferencing.

The inaugural video conference meeting was a winner! Most State Bocce

Board delegates were online making this inaugural quarterly Bocce Wrap Up meeting a success for Bocce & communication.

Instead of just talking to someone by telephone, people are able to see each other as well. Video conferencing also allows graphics to be uploaded, along with documents and videos. Multipoint videoconferencing allows three or more participants to sit in a virtual conference room and communicate as if they were sitting right next to each other.

In this inaugural meeting we had representatives from NSW, TAS, SA, WA, Vic and even NSW reps in Slovenia on the video hook up making it ever so easy to talk and share information to all in one hit.

BA will be having more of these type of meetings in the coming year with regular quarterly meetings being scheduled as part of the Bocce strategy with all Bocce State and Sector leads. STOP PRESS! STOP PRESS!
