A bowling alley (the traditional name for a bowling establishment) is the last place one would expect to find an art gallery. But Lucky Strike, a chain of chic upscale bowling centers, proudly claims its passion for the arts. Its lanes and lounges in 22 cities nationwide are famous for their ever-changing video displays of works by dozens of emerging artists. Lucky Strike’s innovation is just one example of bowling’s dramatic transformation over the past few decades. Once a no-frills sport played mostly by lower-middle-income workers in sponsored leagues, bowling has become the centerpiece of high-tech family entertainment complexes and fancy clubs that appeal to trendy urbanites. As a result, bowling is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, especially among the young. According to the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), more than 70 million Americans bowl each year, which makes bowling one of the most popular participation sports in the United States. The doubles pair made it through to the top 16 against some of the best countries the world and not only matched it with them but won. Despite contracting a nasty bug, they handed defeat to power nations Hungary, Switzerland and France and some of those teams included fully-fledged professionals. "Beating Switzerland was pretty big. They're high up," Nick said. "I don't think our skills were any worse than a lot of them, it was just decision-making and train- ing. "So it was good to beat them and France and Hungary ... and against France it was just good to win the way we won." Time had run out against France and Nick and Diane found themselves three down before mounting a remarkable comeback which South American commentators described in a live stream as "impossible". "We were down 7-10 and had two balls ... we had one point, then got two and shot another ball and got four on the last end," Nick said.

    Bob Jewett Combinations and Throw Some surprising insights into the world of "throw." In my column last April, I covered some of the details of throw. Here are two related and surprising experiments for you to try. As a reminder, a ball is said to be "thrown" when its path is not directly away from the spot where another ball contacts it. This deviation can be due to spin on the cue ball, or simply from the motion of the striking ball across the struck ball on a cut shot. Most beginners will shoot the shot in Diagram 1 wrong. The two object balls are frozen together and pointed about six inches away from the pocket. A novice will attempt to "cut" the second ball by playing to side A of the balls, perhaps expecting the first ball to move to the right before pushing the second ball towards the pocket. Of course, we all know that you have to hit the shot on side B, and let the friction between the balls drag the second ball towards the pocket. But how does the shot change if the balls aren't touching? With some separation, as in Diagram 2, there will be two effects, the throw from the sur- face friction, and the cut because the first ball does move to the side before it hits the second ball. Which effect will dominate? If the balls are separated by a hair's breadth, the shot hasn't changed much and you would expect nearly the same result as for frozen balls.

As an international sports program, Special Olympics has created these rules based upon The International Candlepin Bowling Association (ICBA) rules for candlepin bowling found at www.candlepinbowling.com/. Less than sixty days and counting until the 11th Australian Raffa Bocce Open Championship gets underway in Liverpool, Sydney. The best of the best Raffa Bocce players from Adelaide, Mt Gambier, Melbourne, Regional Victoria and Sydney will be at the Liverpool Catholic Club to win the prize, and unlike in years past, participants will have an opportunity on the Friday before the championship, to get first hand training by International Australian Coach Franco Fava. Bocce Australia has arranged for Franco Fava to be in Sydney three days prior to the start of the Championship to provide Referee training and special training for Raffa players interested in skilling up on the finer points of the game. Training morning and afternoon sessions will be held at the Liverpool Catholic Club. Session times to be publicised in January. Bocce Australia joins with Liverpool Catholic Club, NSW Bocce Federation, Australian Sports Commission, CBI (Confederation Internationale Bocce) and Confederation Mondiale des Sports de Boules (C.M.S.B.), in promoting this successful annual bocce championship! Raffa bocce is an exciting fast paced bowls sport, played with coloured unbiased bowls which the player can bowl or shoot to knock the opponent’s bowl away and make a point close to the jack, or bounce the bowl off the side boards for a placement.
