Equipment and Materials Shopping List

All essential equipment, required for your first teaching week, is highlighted in bold.

Try to buy the best quality equipment that you can afford - money spent should be seen as a long-term investment. As a guide, the essential draughting and model making equipment will cost a total of approximately £140.00.

This equipment is essential for your work on most modules of the programme, and throughout your study. If handled with care this equipment should last for many years into your professional lives.

Essential draughting equipment:

1. Drawing Board Professional, portable, A2 minimum size, with parallel motion and several angle positions. For example, see http://www.graphicsdirect.co.uk/products/challenge- ferndown (Challenge Ferndown A2 drawing boards (CHALFERNA2).

2. Adjustable Set Square Standard. For example, see http://www.graphicsdirect.co.uk/products/unique- adjustable-set-squares (Unique Adjustable Set Squares 8” (U.20CBI).

3. Architect’s Scale Rule A good quality one will last a lifetime. Scales that should appear on an Architect’s Scale rule include 1:1, 1:5, 1:20, 1:50, 1:100, 1:200 & 1:500. It will also be very useful if the rule includes scales of 1:1250 & 1:2500. 4. Technical Set (including technical with 0.5mm HB or H leads, adaptor and ink eraser) College set of ‘Rotring’, ‘Faber Castell’ or ‘ (Rotring Rapidograph recommended. thicknesses to include: 0.25, 0.35 & 0.5 (0.18 also very useful).

5. Compass With adaptor for technical pens. Extension bar attachment also very useful for drawing large circles (often included in set). Ensure that compass make is compatible with make, or buy both products from same manufacturer. 6. Standard eraser E.g. Staedtler Mars Plastic Eraser or similar. Also useful but not essential:

7. Steel Safety Rule A cork backed one can be useful to prevent slipping, approximately 30cm long. E.g. http://www.graphicsdirect.co.uk/products/aluminium-cutting- (Cutting 30cm (RULER-30)).

8. Scalpels with blades Standard scalpel handle and plenty of spare type 10A blades. For example, see http://www.graphicsdirect.co.uk/products/swann-morton-blister-pack (Swann Morton Blister Pack No3 handle / 10a blades (SWANBLIST)).

9. Cutting mat A3 minimum size. Anti-slip and self-healing. For example, see http://www.graphicsdirect.co.uk/products/cutting-mat (Cutting Mat A3 (A3G)).

10. Glue A ‘UHU’ type all purpose adhesive (e.g. ‘UHU’ all-purpose adhesive, or ‘Bostik’ all-purpose adhesive).

Also useful but not essential:

11. ‘Stanley’ knife And spare blades 12. Scissors Good quality, fairly narrow pointed blades for accurate cuts (e.g. craft type scissors). 13. Pins

Essential sketching equipment:

14. Fine-line pens Used for freehand sketching. Three thicknesses should be sufficient, one for very thin lines, one for medium lines and one for thick lines.

15. Standard lead 1B to 5B.

Essential paper & related items:

16. Sketch book A5 (pocket size).

17. A2 Layout Pad Sometimes called Detail Paper.

18. A2 Tracing Single sheets or pad. Paper

19. Drafting tape Low tack so easily removed from layout paper & tracing paper.

20. A2 plastic For transporting A2 drawings. carrier

It is worth shopping around to find a bargain, and for this the internet is an invaluable resource. Nottingham Trent University has the Bonington Shop on campus which stocks a lot of the items listed. John E. Wright in Nottingham are a little more expensive, but stock the majority of the equipment listed above.

PCs and Laptops

The University provides both general purpose and specialist CAD based PCs for all students within the School. Design project and related work can be undertaken on these machines in a number of dedicated rooms. However, to supplement this and provide a basis for flexible working in project studios it strongly recommended that you purchase a laptop, though this can take place once you have arrived at the University
