  • November 19, 2013
November 19, 2013 The past few days have been extremely stressful for everyone at Virginia State University, none more so than our football coach Latrell Scott. During this turbulent period, Coach Scott has exhibited the dignity, leadership, and resilience that have characterized his tenure at VSU. Coach Scott understands that actions have consequences. Coach Scott’s support of his players, cooperation with authorities, and actions in facilitating the process during and following the incident, has been exemplary. Immediately reaching out to his counterpart at Winston-Salem State University with an apology and asking “what can I do?” is in keeping with the Latrell Scott who, since January, has won over players, students, faculty, and administrators. For Coach Scott, it’s always “what can I do?” Latrell has integrated himself and his staff into every aspect of campus life and the community. As head football coach, he and his staff are active in campus activities, reaching out to the community and supporting events across campus. On Monday, the team’s day off, players mentor children at Ettrick Elementary School, living the VSU mission of service to build a better world. The discipline and tenacity that exemplifies Coach Scott’s character is manifested in the classroom and on the field. This season, his football team boasts a cumulative 2.81 grade point average, which is above last year’s average that led the CIAA. His team’s classroom success has been mirrored on the gridiron. Chosen to finish 10th in the CIAA, the 2013 Trojans captured the Northern Division with a 9-1 record, including 7-0 in conference play.

We hope you enjoy the September edition of the Sportsline, the newsletter of The Norfolk Sports Club! Volume 33 #9 September, 2018 September brings Latrell Scott! Join us on Monday, September 10th, as we welcome Latrell Scott. Scott was named the 17th head football coach in Norfolk State history on Dec. 16, 2014. Under Scott’s tutelage, the Spartans have posted .500 conference records in two of the last three seasons. The Spartans had seven players earn a total of eight spots on the postseason All- MEAC teams in 2017, bringing the total of all-conference selections under Scott to 19. The Spartans ranked highly in a number of statistical categories nationally in 2017. NSU scored six defensive touchdowns during the season, tied for the most in the nation among FCS teams. They also ranked fourth in the nation in fewest turnovers (11), fifth in turnover margin (+15) and 10th in passes intercepted (17). In addition, NSU was the least-penalized team in the MEAC for the third straight year. Scott came to NSU following an outstanding two-year run as head coach at Virginia State University. Scott directed the Trojans to a 19-4 record and two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division regular-season titles in his two seasons in Petersburg. The Trojans never lost to a CIAA team under Scott’s direction, going a combined 15-0. For his efforts, Scott was named the 2014 CIAA Coach of the Year. In 2013, Scott was voted the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division State Co-Coach of the Year and the Touchdown Club of Richmond’s state Division II/III Coach of the Year after guiding VSU to a 9-1 overall record and unblemished 7-0 mark in CIAA competition.
