Posted March 30, 2011 The Mac vs. the PC What is the difference? During ‗Tech Night‘ on Monday April 11, our own Kurt Jefferson, will demonstrate the latest Mac operating system, answer questions, and show what the Mac has to offer. The program starts at 7:00 p.m. Whether you use a Mac or not, you'll learn why this computer is growing in popularity, why many Windows users are also buying a Mac, and what is predicted for the Mac's in the future. ―Apple is now the world's most valuable technology company. Its iPads and iPhones are selling by the truckload. Its Apple Stores are filled with customers. Sales of its Macintosh computers are booming,‖ Kurt reports. Kurt Jefferson is a regular teacher of classes in the CKCS computer lab. He usually concentrates on Apple programs, but if you check the CKCS Spring class schedule, he ventures into companion computer topics. He also is a SIG leader on Macintosh subjects on the second Thursday each month. An Apple Computer with an iPhone USB connected. Everyone is welcome and we hope to see you there. Bring a friend with you. It is time to start working in our yards, digging gardens, mowing the lawn, and just sitting outside enjoying being outdoors again. Don’t forget to include CKCS in your spring activities. Our SIG’s and Tech Night’s will still continue to meet at their scheduled times. Spring Classes begin very soon. The class schedule is on line at www.ckcs.org and is also reproduced in this newsletter. One of the spring classes begins April 6. It is the beginning class in Photoshop Elements. If you are interested in it make sure you sign up before it starts. The remaining classes start the week of April 18 or later. The April Tech Night will feature our own Kurt Jefferson. Kurt has been teaching one of our Mac classes and is in charge of the Macintosh SIG that meets every month. If you have walked by the Apple store in Fayette mall and seen all the people in it and wondered what all the commotion was about (especially those of us that don’t use a Mac) you should attend this Tech Night meeting on April 11, at 7:00 p.m. As a PC user I have found that many of the programs written for the Mac now work on the PC. I have started exploring some of these programs and have found them to be very user friendly. Kurt will talk about some of these programs at our Tech Night. You can find more details about this meeting on our web site and the first page in this newsletter. If you missed the March Tech Night, you missed an opportunity to learn about the newest smart phones offered by AT&T. These smart phone are the future of “computer” communications: i.e. email, Twitter, surfing the internet, etc. I spent some time with a smart phone over the last week and am amazed at what you can do with them. One App allows the phone to become a level (like the ones builders use to level walls). Another App turns the phone into a language interpreter. You speak into the phone and it will translate what you said into one of several different foreign languages. Several of the languages I tried were Russian, Japanese, French, and Korean. If you haven’t been attending Tech Night lately, you have missed exploring some of the new uses of computer technology. Put it in your plans to start attending. Tech Night is always on the second Monday of each month. If you have an idea about a topic you would like us to have for a Tech Night, please put a note in my mailbox at CKCS or call the CKCS office on Monday morning. 3 April 2011 June 13 will be our annual picnic. Please mark this on your calendar. More details will follow in the May and June newsletter. This meeting is when we elect new officers and board members. CKCS The Thursday Morning Coffee Group The Thursday Morning Coffee Group For the last couple of months, each Thursday morning, starting at 9 a.m., CKCS members and guests take part in the Thursday morning coffee group which meets at the CKCS Resource Center. They bring there own coffee, or beverage and snack if they want one. However, the one thing really served at the session is interesting discussion on any computer subject. Although the group originally formed to discuss digital imaging tips and tricks, the conversation wanders to all subject. Although it starts at 9 a.m. visitors come in at various times from 9 until 10:30 and leave whenever they are ready, because there is no set agenda. It is just friendship and good conversation. According to Larry Cox, all CKCS members are welcome. The group originally met at Panara Bread on Thursday mornings, until at times it got too big and took up too much room at the restaurant. The move to CKCS occurred in late January. Have you checked the current schedule of our Special Interest Groups? A five-week calendar is always available for you to check what is planned for each SIG each month. Go to www.ckcs.org and click on Meeting Schedule. 4 April 2011 KENTUCKY TRADE IS A CORPORATE PARTNER OF CKCS 5 April 2011 Photo contest winners. The category was ‗fog‖.
