As part of this pro- gram, an Academic All-America of the Year is chosen in the following programs: football, volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s bas- ketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s track & field/cross country, women’s track & field/cross country, men’s at-large and women’s at-large. Eight of the programs began in 1987-88, with soccer and track & field/cross country honorees chosen starting in 2002-03. One male and one female national winner are selected from among the sport winners. To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (true freshmen, redshirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.     Big 12 Conference Schools Raise Nine-Year NFL Draft Totals to 277 Alumni Through 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Apr. 26, 2003 DALLAS—Big 12 Conference teams had 10 of the first 62 selections in the 35th annual NFL “common” draft (67th overall) Saturday and added a total of 13 for the opening day. The first-day tallies in the 2003 NFL draft brought the number Big 12 standouts taken from 1995-03 to 277. Over 90 Big 12 alumni signed free agent contracts after the 2000-02 drafts, and three of the first 13 standouts (six total in the first round) in the 2003 draft were Kansas State CB Terence Newman (fifth draftee), Oklahoma State DE Kevin Williams (ninth) Texas A&M DT Ty Warren (13th). Last year three Big 12 standouts were selected in the top eight choices (four of the initial 21), and the 2000 draft included three alumni from this conference in the first 20. Colorado, Nebraska and Florida State paced all schools nationally in the 1995-97 era with 21 NFL draft choices apiece. Eleven Big 12 schools also had at least one youngster chosen in the eight-round draft during 1998. Over the last six (1998-03) NFL postings, there were 73 Big 12 Conference selections among the Top 100. There were 217 Big 12 schools’ grid representatives on 2002 NFL opening day rosters from all 12 members after 297 standouts from league members in ’02 entered NFL training camps—both all-time highs for the league. Nebraska (35 alumni) was third among all Division I-A schools in 2002 opening day roster men in the highest professional football configuration while Texas A&M (30) was among the Top Six in total NFL alumni last autumn.

    INDIVIDUAL HONORS & AWARDS UNITED SOCCER COACHES ALL-AMERICANS Thirteen Huskers have earned 19 All-America awards from the United Soccer Coaches (formerly the NSCAA) in the past 24 seasons. Jaycie Johnson became Nebraska’s most recent All- American, making the third team in 2016. She led the team in goals scored (11), points (24) and game-winning goals (6) during the 2016 campaign. Midfielder Kari Uppinghouse was Nebraska's first first-team All-American in 1996. Uppinghouse provided a dominant physical presence in the midfield while leading Kari Uppinghouse, MF Lindsay Eddleman, F Rebecca Hornbacher, GK the Huskers to their first NCAA Tournament and a 23-game First Team, 1996 Second Team, 1996 Third Team, 1996 winning streak as a junior in 1996. Two other Huskers, Lindsay Eddleman – who became Nebraska's first freshman to earn All-America honors – and goalkeeper Rebecca Hornbacher, joined Uppinghouse as All-Americans in 1996. In 1998, three Huskers earned All-America honors, including Sharolta Nonen, who became the first Nebraska player to become a two-time All-American. Isabelle Morneau and Kim Engesser also added the first honors of their careers. In 1999, Morneau claimed her second straight second- team award, while Nonen became the first Husker to be a three-time All-American. Jenny Benson earned first-team All-America honors as a senior defender in 2000, after moving from the midfield in the spring. Eleven years ago he stopped coming home to his wife and four children. The youngest was 6 months old. He had lost part of his memory and still complains about the constant howling in his head from a concussive whomp. He has filed for bankruptcy and faced at least six civil judgments or liens. At some point he began using a different name. There might be a sinister reason to take on an alias, or perhaps he simply grew tired of people asking if he was that Bjorn Nittmo. Yes, he’s the same guy David Letterman introduced in 1989 as “the only Bjorn Nittmo in the New Jersey phonebook.” In actuality he’s the only Bjorn Nittmo in the world, though he is more peculiar than even that. Nittmo was the left-footed, southern-drawled, Swedish placekicker the media treated like a geegaw from a Cracker Barrel store.
