• Mahotas Documentation Release 1.0
mahotas Documentation Release 1.0 Luis Pedro Coelho December 16, 2013 Contents i ii mahotas Documentation, Release 1.0 Mahotas is a computer vision and image processing library for Python. It includes many algorithms implemented in C++ for speed while operating in numpy arrays and with a very clean Python interface. Notable algorithms: • watershed. • convex points calculations. • hit & miss. thinning. • Zernike & Haralick, LBP, and TAS features. • freeimage based numpy image loading (requires freeimage libraries to be installed). • Speeded-Up Robust Features (SURF), a form of local features. • thresholding. • convolution. • Sobel edge detection. Mahotas currently has over 100 functions for image processing and computer vision and it keeps growing. The release schedule is roughly one release a month and each release brings new functionality and improved perfor- mance. The interface is very stable, though, and code written using a version of mahotas from years back will work just fine in the current version, except it will be faster (some interfaces are deprecated and will be removed after a few years, but in the meanwhile, you only get a warning). In a few unfortunate cases, there was a bug in the old code and your results will change for the better. There is a manuscript about mahotas, which is forthcoming in the Journal of Open Research Software. Full citation (for the time being) is: Mahotas: Open source software for scriptable computer vision by Luis Pedro Coelho in Journal of Open Research Software (forthcoming). Contents 1 mahotas Documentation, Release 1.0 2 Contents CHAPTER 1 Examples This is a simple example of loading a file (called test.jpeg) and calling watershed using above threshold regions as a seed (we use Otsu to define threshold).

The following distributions match your criteria (sorted by popularity): 1. Linux Mint (1) Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distribution whose goal is to provide a more complete out-of-the-box experience by including browser plugins, media codecs, support for DVD playback, Java and other components. It also adds a custom desktop and menus, several unique configuration tools, and a web-based package installation interface. Linux Mint is compatible with Ubuntu software repositories. 2. Mageia (2) Mageia is a fork of Mandriva Linux formed in September 2010 by former employees and contributors to the popular French Linux distribution. Unlike Mandriva, which is a commercial entity, the Mageia project is a community project and a non-profit organisation whose goal is to develop a free Linux-based operating system. 3. Ubuntu (3) Ubuntu is a complete desktop Linux operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit. "Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world. 4. Fedora (4) The Fedora Project is an openly-developed project designed by Red Hat, open for general participation, led by a meritocracy, following a set of project objectives. The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from open source software.

Open source operating system can be the alternative to reduce the cost of software licensing for the student and also others. The advancement of the Linux nowadays and it started replacing the user computer with the open source software. Introduction Shelly, Vermaat, Quasney, Sebok, & Freund (2012), an operating system is a set of programs that coordinates all the activities among computer hardware devices. It provides a means for users to communicate with the computer and other software. Many of today’s computers use Microsoft’s Windows. When a user starts a computer, portions of the operating system are copied into memory from the computer’s hard disk. These parts of the operating system remain in memory while the computer is on. According to Linux.org (2012), Linux is an operating system that developed from a kernel made by Linus Torvalds when he was a student at the University of Helsinki.
