You also are known for volunteering your time out in our community with other MGM Grand Detroit team members. Why do you volunteer? At one tme I had needs and there were people who had to step up to help me and that is how I got to where I am today. Volunteering is my form of grattude to help people in the way I was helped. What are some of the volunteer activities that you most enjoy? Helping with the Covenant House (a sanctuary for homeless children and youth) would be my favorite. Also anything else involving children—Count Day school visits, passing out winter coats, serving lunch—just anything that helps kids. You also are the chairperson of MGM Grand Detroit’s African American Employee Network. What is the function of that group? It’s a lot of employment engagement to help employees get involved and the group also helps to enhance personal development. Those are things I want to do for others and myself at MGM Grand Detroit. Her latest release is 2014’s Southern Comfort, a musical and historical exploration of her family’s roots in Alabama. Carter will perform Southern Comfort at Bowker Auditorium on Thursday, October 9, at 7:30 p.m. She’ll be joined by Will Holshouser on accordion, Marvin Sewell on guitar, Jess Murphy on bass, and Alvester Garnett on drums. According to Carter, “This disc was to pay homage to my family, but it turned out to be so much more.” Carter spent many hours digging deep into the historic collections of folklorists, identifying field recordings from Appalachia that she connected with.

d Interview REGINA CARTER December, 2010 Jazz violinist Regina Carter ranks as one of Oakland Uni versity’s most talented and justly famous alumni. Her Re verse Thread was chosen by NPR as one of the top 50 albums of 2010. Her touring schedule covers America, Europe and Japan. TOJ interviewed Regina in December of 2010, and we reconstructed the conversa tion. Ms. Carter kindly and thoroughly edited the result so that it represents her thoughts and her voice. Among the ben efits of interviewing her instead of researching her in the na tional media, is that we could ask about her experience as a student here. As a consequence, readers will find that Regina Carter did not merely attend OU, she found a rich and stimu lating experience here. She is one of us. TOJ: Reverse Thread, a great CD with wonderful new African sounds, also seems to offer things from all over the world. What influences led you to develop this sound? 47 RC: Detroit was such an ethnically diverse city. I was exposed to other cultures and their music at an early age without having to travel. Some of the sounds I heard were very “foreign” to my ear but were extremely beautiful and captivating. I bought al bums with strings from different parts of the planet and started imitating the sounds I heard. TOJ: You have made several successful major label CDs in your recording career, and they too are wonderful. But one can no tice that they are in a different category. Reverse Thread is more distinctively world music.
