PRESS RELEASE May 15, 2019 Roppongi Art Night 2019 Executive Committee With this year’s theme of “Night Journey, Daydream” Roppongi Art Night 2019: An art festival staged across Roppongi Throughout the entire night, let’s immerse ourselves in the power of art and its ability to bring joy and emotion beyond words. A red ball, large balloons, shining birds, and a floating stone, among others, will travel throughout the city of Roppongi. The program has been finalized! May 25 (Sat) 10:00 – May 26 (Sun) 18:00, 2019 Core Time: 25 (Sat) 18:00 – 26 (Sun) 6:00 The Executive Committee of Roppongi Art Night brings you the 10th edition of this event since its inception in 2009. The city of Roppongi will be the stage for this one night only art extravaganza, Roppongi Art Night 2019, with the main event taking place over the course of two days from May 25 (Sat) - May 26 (Sun) 2019. Roppongi Art Night aims to create a model for community development within the Tokyo metropolis, and it has grown to become an arts festival representative of Tokyo. Following this year’s theme of “Night Journey, Daydream,” the program features Choi Jeong Hwa, a leading artist of contemporary Asian art. A number of artists will join in to create works of art scattered throughout the city. In addition to numerous works of contemporary art, design, film, and performance, there will be a range of participatory and experiential programs taking place throughout the night. For the duration of Roppongi Art Night 2019, various art museums and galleries will offer collaborative programming, including special events tied to current exhibitions and extended opening hours. -

Incorporating the Critical: Environmental Art's Vitality
INCORPORATING THE CRITICAL: ENVIRONMENTAL ART’S VITALITY IN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE by ALLEN PRATT (Under the Direction of Katherine Melcher) ABSTRACT The realms of art and landscape architecture are inherently in a state of overlap, juxtaposition, and reference of one another. This suggests art’s importance in the development and understanding of landscape architecture. This thesis examined environmental art’s potential to be used as an explorative design process to generate new ideas and perspectives. It used a series of environmental art case studies, including the author’s own installation in the Founders Memorial Garden, to investigate environmental art’s value to the study and practice of contemporary landscape architecture. This study revealed that the boundaries between the spatial disciplines of art, architecture, and landscape architecture are artificial and that these boundaries can be dissolved in practice. It concluded that environmental art possesses the ability to alter perceptions of space and place, generate new ideas and perspectives, and enhance the human condition to address issues of site, sight, and insight. And if you happen to be in Eng- land from June to July, you will likely see it dribble down the streets in time for the Cultural Olympiad. It is a 15-foot, in- flated sphere that weighs 250 pounds and is always cloaked in red PVC fabric. It is Redball, the world famous sculptural installation by New York based artist Kurt Perschke. Since 2001, RedBall has thrown caution to the wind and traveled across the globe, adopting cities as its canvas. Squeezed between buildings and underpasses, lifted up in town squares, and hoisted above bridges, RedBall explores the unique architectural landscape and history of each city it finds itself in. Examples include Toronto, Sydney, Barcelona, and St. Louis where RedBall’s expedition began following an urban site commission by the organization Arts in Transit. Perschke is also in the habit of documenting RedBall’s trips to every city with the most thrilling short films usually direct- ed by Tony Gaddis of the U.S. -

STRATEGIC OUTCOME/INITIATIVE: Inclusive, Equitable and Welcoming Community PRIOR ACTION: See background information below. EXPENDITURE REQUIRED: $50,000 for a Public Art Trust Fund SOURCE OF FUNDS: General Fund LEGAL REQUIREMENTS: NA BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Montpelier ArtSynergy Project, in collaboration with Montpelier Alive, the City of Montpelier, and the Community Engagement Lab, and its consultant Designing Local developed a strategic Public Art Master Plan and community-wide vision for how public art can be integrated into the framework of the City of Montpelier. Crafting the plan began in the spring of 2017 and included multiple public workshops which included the schools, the general public, and the steering committee. The Public Art Master Plan outlines the vision for public art in Montpelier and establishes the programs and policies to accomplish that vision through a priority action plan that outlines short, medium, and long term goals for a newly created public art commission. Funding for the Public Art Master Plan was provided in part by the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town Grant which the City received in 2016. RedBall, by Kurt Perschke (New York), is the world’s longest-running street art work.1 RedBall Montréal will invade 7 different locations over 7 days exploring with insight and wit the unique qualities of Montreal’s architecture and urban space. Through its monumental yet playful presence, RedBall reinvents familiar spaces and sheds light in places that, owing to habit, the citygoer no longer perceives. This artistic experiment activates collective imagination through sensory and visual experimentation. Using the architectural, historical and cultural particularities of the city as an opportunity, RedBall Montréal moves through iconic, unlikely, busy and historic locations in Montreal to create a once-in-a-lifetime performance.
