Since 2014, Reed’s interview was expanded to take into account the presidency of Donald Trump. The title of this interview was supplied by this publication. Ishmael Reed (b. 1938) is the winner of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship (genius award), the renowned L.A. Times Robert Kirsch Lifetime Achievement Award, the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the National Institute for Arts and Letters. He has been nominated for a Pulitzer and finalist for two National Book Awards and is Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley (a thirty-five year presence); he has also taught at Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth. -

Over the last academic year, the Center for the Humanities has concentrated its energies on initiating, developing, and promoting sustained bodies of research over time. These discrete projects comprise an increasing part of our work. Moving away from delivering one-off events and conferences and toward supporting integrated multidisciplinary research, the Center has initiated collaborations with an increasingly diverse range of partner organizations across the city and internationally. C’è solo un unico partito pro-life (non nel senso fondamentalista cristiano, nel senso di ‘sovvenziona il malato di mente’ – fund-a-mental – Dalachinsky), ed è tutta la vita, ogni cosa che è riuscita a sopravvivere quanto me su questo globo vivente, anch’esso in costante lotta per la vita. Ok, basta. Ora “Il poema della mia vita” – musica. Un critico di musica del New York Times ora in pensione, una volta mi descrisse come un Free Jazz Cultist. E un compositore e saxofonista famoso in città chiamò me e mia moglie, con cui sono sposato da trent’anni e che fortunatamente condivide la mia passione per l’arte e come me è poeta e artista visuale, Jazz Snobs. -

Items not included will be published in the next edition. As we begin another academic year, I am struck by how much change the Program has endured in the past year. After the departure of several faculty members the previous year, we have hired Alexander Parsons and Mat John- son as new faculty members in fiction into tenure track positions, and we also hired Liz Waldner as a visitor in poetry for the year. Our colleague, Daniel Stern, passed away this Spring, and he will be missed. Adam Zagajew- ski will take a visiting position in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago this year, and that Committee will most likely become his new academic home. Ed Hirsh submitted his letter of resignation this Spring, and although Ed had been in New York at the Guggenheim for the last five years, he had still officially been a member of the Creative Writing Program on leave. And Antonya Nelson returned from leave this Spring to continue her teaching at UH. So there has been much change. -

Items not included will be published in the next edition. From the Director... The academic year 2004/2005 was a particularly full one. We welcomed Claudia Rankine to the faculty; we participated in the inaugural course for the new Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for Col- laboration among the Arts; and on April 16, 2005, we hosted a celebration of the UH Creative Writ- ing Program’s 25th anniversary. This year we will welcome Kimiko Hahn to the poetry faculty and welcome Patricia Powell in the Fall and Peter Turchi in the Spring as visiting professors of fiction. And 19 new students will join the program: 10 in poetry; 8 in fiction, and 1 in non-fiction. In 2005/2006 we will address the undergraduate concentration in Creative Writing; we will work with the Graduate Studies Program to reform our graduate programs; and we will continue our ef- forts to build a strong and effective alumni association. It was especially gratifying in April to visit with alumni and former faculty. It allowed us the op- portunity to recognize the special contributions of some of our former faculty, to acknowledge people in the community who have generously supported the program over the years, and to ac- claim the achievements of our alumni. -
