John, along with his wife of 62 years – the delightful Googie Withers and their charming eldest daughter Joanna McCallum, helped to thoroughly enthral and entertain many MVM members at the annual gathering back in September 2007, giving us all an afternoon to remember for a very long time. On that occasion, John kindly signed my copy of his excellent book ‘Life With Googie’ which naturally I will treasure even more now, along with his thoughtful and most gracious letters regarding MVM – and the enjoyment each magazine gave both Googie and himself. Not only a talented actor of the stage and screen, John went into the production side of the business in Australia – especially with the popular TV series ‘Skippy’ in the 1960s, which I remember with affection. John and Googie (pictured here in the 1950s) appeared together many times on the screen – and more so on the stage in a wide variety of successful productions spanning some fifty years. -

JANET GREEN COLLECTION Accession date: March 1984 Extent: 52 Archive boxes INTRODUCTION Documents relating to the work of film, television and stage writer Janet Green (Born Ethel Victoria Green, 4/7/1914, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, died 30/3/1993, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire) Adopted the professional name Janet Green [also wrote as Sarah Mutimer and occasionally as Janet McCormick after her second marriage to theatre manager and writer John McCormick]. Janet Green had short stories published before she was sixteen but became an actress in 1931 (acted with Ralph Lynn in the Aldwych farces and had leading roles in 'Hellowagain' and 'Nap Hand' at the Aldwych and Shaftesbury Theatres) and was involved in theatrical entertainment for the armed forces throughout World War II. In 1945 she gave up acting and began writing for the stage and screen, often in collaboration with her husband John McCormick. During 1956-1959 the couple were under contract to the J. Independent cinema also continues to be a major focus of the Archive’s pres- Rebellion: Creating a New Black Cinema, now touring North America, the ervation efforts. After premiering our restoration of Robert Altman’s Come Archive has not rested on its laurels, but has put together a new UCLA Festi- Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982) in 2011, preservationist val of Preservation for 2013. It is my great pleasure, as director of UCLA Film Jere Guldin this year introduces Altman’s first major feature, That Cold Day in & Television Archive, to introduce the 2013 “FOP,” which again reflects the the Park (1969). BFI Southbank presents work from the latter part of his career; from the groundbreaking Victim (1961) - celebrating its 50th anniversary - and The Servant (1963) to Darling (1965) and Accident (1967). Missing British, wartime film rediscovered. Welcome Mr. Washington (1944) returns to BFI National Archive Peggy Cummins with Martita Hunt in Welcome Mr. Washington (1944) London - Thursday 14 January 2016. Welcome Mr Washington directed by Leslie Hiscott (1944), a wartime film starring Peggy Cummins has been rediscovered. It was last seen in the UK on television in 1961. Since then the film has been missing, presumed lost and was on the BFI’s Most Wanted Films list issued in 2010 to mark the 75th anniversary of the BFI National Archive. Peggy Cummins, star, has just seen the film at a private screening, the first time since 1944, and just in time for her 90th birthday. The 16mm re-released print of Welcome Mr. Washington was discovered by an eagle-eyed film enthusiast in the Cinema Museum collection in London. The BFI acquired this print, then, during discussions with Paramount it emerged that they too had a print, also 16mm and also cut for re- release. So while it’s unfortunate that the full-length version doesn’t appear to exist, there is now a version of this light, warm-hearted Home Front tale in the BFI National Archive with a sparkling performance performance by star Peggy Cummins. Peggy Cummins said, “I am absolutely delighted to be able to see this early film of mine again. It was at a key stage in my career and it was very important to me. I am very pleased that the film has been brought back to the BFI. I’m also very grateful for the effort the BFI has gone to in order to bring the film back to the screen.” Welcome Mr. -

The BFI will take Britain back to darker times and thrill the nation by uncovering as never before the dark heart of film. With over 150 titles and around 1000 screenings GOTHIC features spectacularly terrifying special events to thrill every corner of the UK. The project also incorporates the longest BFI Southbank season yet (4 months), UK wide theatrical and DVD releases, an education programme, a new BFI GOTHIC book and a range of exciting partnerships, special guests and commentators, including project ambassador Sir Christopher Frayling. GOTHIC will explore film’s most popular theme, spawning some of the medium’s most iconic, powerful and terrifying scenes and characters whose lasting popularity just refuses to die. GOTHIC will celebrate the very British genius – rooted in literature and art – that gave rise to some of the most filmed characters in our on-screen history: Dracula, Frankenstein and Jekyll & Hyde.
