The Chairman’s Address

Dear Members,

By the time you receive and read this message, it will be close to six months that our Gymkhana, city and nation have been in a lockdown. I am sure most, if not all of us, are facing such a situation for the first time and many of us are still trying to come to terms with it. Personally, for me it's been a time of introspection and concern, that there are certain events that are completely out of man's control and we are all at God's mercy. Regarding the activities of the Gymkhana, I think we have a great Managing Committee. Some of our MC Members have continued putting all the effort and time necessary at great personal risk to ensure that we use this time well, even though there is a lockdown.

This called for a different attitude and though we have had heavy rains and the pandemic, the Team worked together. I quote Vince Lombardi, 'Individual Commitment to a Group Effort - that's what makes a Team work, a Company work, a Society work, a Gymkhana work.' The current Committee has tried doing just that. Though our last physical MC Meeting was in March, many of us have met virtually and discussed and deliberated on various issues and taken decisions accordingly.

Just to keep you abreast of the happenings at the WCG during these times, given below are some initiatives in progress:

-- The WCG is implementing a new Club Management Software and we expect it to go live before the year ends, while parallel runs will start from October.

-- The entire Electrical system is being re-done with state-of-the-art equipment bearing in mind the safety of our Members and Staff.

-- The Kitchen infrastructure is being revamped completely and most of the defunct appliances are being replaced.

-- New Catering services will start as we begin operations. A satellite kitchen with limited options will be ready if needed. Our Projects, F&B, General Secretary and Treasurer, with our General Managers, have put in a tremendous amount of time in ensuring we engage the best contractors, at the best rates, to come in.

During these times we had to resort to some cost cutting measures and the respective

2 | Annual Report 2019-2020

Secretaries have taken prompt action. I wish to put on record our appreciation for some of our Staff members who, despite all odds, continue to ensure that the WCG is kept open, clean and safe for completing the initiatives we have taken.

The QuaranShine Sundays have been well received and member participation has been encouraging. A big Thank You to the Social, Youth and Communications Teams for a well- coordinated effort and please look forward to some more innovative initiatives from them. I encourage members to please come forward with ideas, sponsors and connections in any area that helps the WCG in moving ahead. There is a saying, 'A car's windshield is so large and the rear-view mirror so small because our past is not as important as our future. So, let's look ahead and move on.'

The Website is being redesigned with a new look and feel from October 1st and with an assurance that content will be constantly updated. I request all Members at regular intervals to visit the Website for latest updates and events. This will be integrated with a Payment Gateway shortly. It is also important to know that we have had setbacks, mainly a delay in getting the Change of User and the approval for the reduced Tariff of the Tennis Court from the Collector. Though these were at advanced stages, changes in the government and the lockdown has just brought all these activities to a standstill.

Meanwhile, a close watch is being kept on the directives issued by the Government on resumption of Gymkhana activities and we have already opened the WCG for outdoor activities making sure that the SOP's are followed.

Please go through our Financial Report and send in your queries early so that the Treasurer along with the Finance Team can be ready with the answers. This is the first time an AGM is being conducted in this manner, so please bear with us if there are some glitches. Though at the start of the year we had planned to have an SGM to address some of the rules that warranted a change, we were constrained from doing so because of the lockdown and will plan it for early next year.

Thank you and God Bless you and your families.

Outdoor Sports: Joaquim Carvalho Indoor Sports: Ryan Martin

Ambition is the pathway to success and Persistence is the vehicle to arise. If one has the qualities of courage, determination and perseverance there is no goal which is unattainable. All these were visible in plenty in the WCG Sports Tourneys 2019/20 in various disciplines held at the Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana.

The WCG tournaments have been getting successfully bigger with humongous crowd support and that has set a hallmark for sportspersons and institutions to participate with fantastic prize money, prizes and credit for this also goes to the top class infrastructure and sporting atmosphere that works well for participants.

Rink Football and Rink Hockey with many innovative ideas and rule changes to bolster the game and make it more spectator and player friendly have been initiated and implemented in these last editions. To entertain the crowds and keep their enthusiasm high a Zaldi Five Housie was held during the half time duration of the hockey finals held in a packed atmosphere which was a runaway success and kept the spectators glued to their seats. The football tournament has been growing from strength to strength with the participating teams increasing in the Men, Women, Veterans Men and Schoolboys category and the Hockey Tournament drawing outstation teams like the star studded Indian Oil Corp., and South Central Railway from the North and South Central Railway from the South respectively, in addition to the city top team making this rink hockey tournament larger and much more than just a local affair.

The games are getting bigger, better and drawing large crowds which we are sure will produce and keep producing champions who have emerged from these platforms offered by the WCG. The women have always been encouraged by the WCG with the Tourneys in Hockey and Football being closely fought affairs with more players and more teams participating, and several inquiries for more participation from outstation women teams.

The Quadrangular Badminton Tournament featuring WCG, Catholic Gymkhana, SAISA and Bandra Gymkhana was another tourney held with the WCG team going down fighting to the Catholic Gymkhana team in a nail biting finish on our courts; however, the team not resting on their laurels went on to take part in the Inter Club Badminton tournament and finished yet again to be the runners up

9 | Annual Report 2019-2020

Another milestone and as mentioned earlier, the WCG can build and sustain our sports legacy by nurturing sports talent in the young and old by providing them a platform to participate; in an innovative tournament the WCG hosted and organized the first ONE DAY Parent Child Tennis tournament which was another runaway success. The parent child combination tennis event highlighted the child for once encouraging the parent to pull on and put forth his best in their quest to win the match and further progress in the tournament. There were parent child combinations from outside going by the popularity of the WCG. This tourney was fully coordinated by our very own Olympian Merwyn Fernandis.

To promote and develop sporting interest among the young in an under 12 football tournament drawing more than 30 teams held on our tennis courts, the finalists were given a football each besides the trophies for the winners and runner up. This tourney witnessed a packed stand, filled with parents, fans, players and spectators.

For scouting talent and then moulding them into top class sports persons, we have the WCG Coaching Academies in Tennis, Badminton, Swimming, which have been growing and producing players who can compete at the top level in sports. At the WCG we wish to consolidate and leverage the existing sporting success and bring in more laurels and opportunities to budding sports persons.

Food & Beverage: Colin Coelho Before the lockdown, F&B was in overdrive. The caterer introduced many new items on the menu and held authentic food festivals like Mangalorean, Parsi and Goan. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays saw our restaurant packed, bubbling with music amidst the clinking of glasses and clatter of cutlery! Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, our members and their guests were spoilt for choice between dining at the restaurant or enjoying a sumptuous meal on our newly reopened terrace under a starlit sky. Our F&B team also introduced a winter menu which brought back a lot of our old time favourites like steaks, sizzlers, pork chops and more. Recently, we appointed a new caterer, Udhan Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. Depending on notifications from the Government and until normalcy returns, they will be ready to start with a snack counter as we are in the process of renovating the kitchen. We would like to bid adieu to Aurum Foods, our outgoing caterer, and wish him the best in his future endeavours.

You will be happy to know that WCG has put into effect the prescribed guidelines with respect to SOPs, and that all government directives are being implemented as directed. We are happy to inform you that Ernest Louis, a highly qualified, experienced HR professional and a long time WCG member, has accepted our invitation to the HR Subcommittee. Regarding Communications, most, if not all that you read from the WCG, is generated by Communications. Niam Gupta works closely with Communications particularly in the dissemination of messages, making certain that messages reach members on time every time! Today, members are more aware of the happenings at WCG as more members opt to receive the WCG notices via WhatsApp. WCG Staff Pre & Post Covid19

23 | Annual Report 2019-2020

Finance: Sunil Lobo

For the year ended, 31st March 2020, our total income was Rs 3,45,33,499. In FY 18, the income was Rs 3,44,87,966 and in FY 19 it was Rs 3,55,91,376. The drop in income was primarily from Investments. As you are aware, interest rates have fallen and for tax efficiency, we had in FY’19, invested in FMPs for a period of 3 years. Thus, the income would be received on maturity. Our total expenditure for FY’20 was Rs 4,08,99,028. The major expenditures were salaries/wages, depreciation and projects. Thus, we ended the year with a negative of Rs 63,65,529. This includes Depreciation of Rs 43,26,974 and Repairs & Renovations of Rs 17,50,871, which are non-cash items. An important point to note, is the interest accrued on FMP’s is 97.90 lakhs (PY was 41.39 lakhs). Thus, if we incorporate the same in the P&L, our net income would be positive. However, for tax efficiency, the income would be seen only on maturity. As on 31st Aug 2020, the income accrued is around Rs 1.33cr and we estimate it to be above Rs 1.7cr on maturity. This would result in a huge positive income, given the maturity of the FMPs in FY22. The Investment Committee did consider, to redeem existing investments to fund the expenses. However, given the low interest rate scenario, it did not want to take a reinvestment risk. For the FY 2021, we have taken various cost savings measures, given the Nil facility income as on the date of this report. On the Projects front, we have been raising funds from new memberships (like we did in FY19). Of the total amount of INR 1.6cr spent on projects; Rs 86,77,500 was from new membership. With respect to our corpus, the investment philosophy has been capital protection, investing primarily in AAA rated papers and tax efficiency. The total corpus as on FY’20 was Rs 27,45,27,376. You may be aware that there has been turmoil in the financial markets over the last 1.5 years. However, thanks to the expertise, periodic reviewing and dedication of the Finance & Investment sub-committee members, we are pleased to inform you that our investments are safe and sound. I would like to specifically thank Lancelot D’Cunha, Rohin Gracious, Zenoh D’Cunha, Neil Francisco and Stanley Lasrado for their support in ensuring our investments are safe and give decent returns. They spend a lot of time in periodic reviewing of the portfolio. On the Financial Accounts, I would like to mention that WCG is one of the few Gymkhanas who have completed their audited financials on time, despite the lockdown. Here, again I would specifically like to thank Stanley, Lancelot D’Cunha and the WCG finance staff - Dinanath Sawant, Gawde who despite difficulty in commuting, ensured the accounts were finalized, along with the auditor and GST consultant.
