9/30/2020-9/29/2022 CDC (Dubow, Huesmann, Boxer, Multiple PIs); 1R01CE003302-01; Exposure to Violence and Subsequent Weapons Use: Integrative data analysis across two urban high-risk communities Major goals: We are currently nearing the end of data collection on our NIH-funded project, “Exposure to Violence and Subsequent Weapons Use: Mediating and Moderating Processes” (R01 HD084652), which comprises two longitudinal field studies in high-risk urban areas, giving us prospective data over 14 years between the two studies. In this project, we will conduct integrative data analyses on the two data sets from the NICHD study (Curran & Hussong, 2009). (Total direct and indirect costs = $696,200).

Pending R01 AG073184-01 (Dubow, Huesmann, Boxer-MPIs) 9/1/21-8/31/26 National Institutes of Health Not Funded A Prospective Lifespan Study of Age 70 Behavioral, Health, Cognitive, and Psychosocial Outcomes The main goal of the proposed project is to understand the long-term impact of multiple personal and contextual influences in childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, and middle adulthood on critical outcomes in late adulthood. Our proposal is to collect a fifth wave of data on participants of the Columbia County Longitudinal Study (CCLS) when they are 70 years old in 2022. The CCLS is a prospective study of an entire county’s (Columbia County, NY) 8-year-olds (N=856) who were in the third grade in 1960, when they and their parents were first interviewed. CCLS participants were re-interviewed in 1970 (age 18), 1982 (age 30; their spouses also were interviewed), and 2000 (age 48; their spouses and children also were interviewed. With a new wave of data capturing the later adulthood period, we can investigate how childhood, adolescent, and early and middle adulthood personal factors (e.g., aggression, intellectual/cognitive competence; mental health) and contextual factors (e.g., family and peer group relationships, economic challenges) are linked to a number of key outcomes at age 70 (e.g., aggression, mental health and well-being; physical health; cognitive functioning; engagement with life and social relationships; and economic and vocational outcomes). Grant Number Pending (PIs, Miller-Graff and Cummings; co-I Dubow) 6/1/21-5/31/26 National Institutes of Health An Evidence-Based Family Support Program for Parents and Children in Palestine: A Theory-Based Intervention Few evidence-based programs exist to support children and families in Palestine, despite documented evidence of their heightened risk for emotional and behavioral adjustment problems associated with exposure to conflict and violence at multiple levels of the social ecology (e.g., political, community, and family). Thus, a critical need exists for an evidence-based program to ameliorate the impact of political violence on the overall well-being of children and families in Palestine, including both the West Bank and Gaza. Firmly grounded the cultural context of Palestine, the long-term goal of this project is to provide a family-focused intervention program (Promoting Positive Family Futures; PPFF) that may facilitate individuals’ sense of safety and support in the context of chronic adversity. The objective is to evaluate this Eric F. Dubow Revised 4/21 Page 8 intervention program in the context of a randomized clinical trial (RCT) in the West Bank and Gaza (N=300). The central hypothesis is that the program will have direct positive effects on parent psychopathology and security in both the family and community as well as on adolescent emotional security in the family and community and psychological adjustment. Consistent with family systems theory, we further hypothesize that treatment effects on parents will mediate on the effects of the treatment on adolescent adjustment. The rationale is that bolstering resilience in family systems is a key approach to promoting positive functioning in families exposed to chronic violence. (.5-2.0 CM)

Grant Number Pending (PI, Felix; subaward PI, Dubow) 6/1/21-5/31/26 National Institutes of Health Not Funded The Influence of Media Exposure to Acute Mass Violence on Families and Youth We examine how repeated media exposure to acute mass violence (AMV) can increase distress and perception that the world is unsafe, which can impact parental worries and parenting. Our objective is to examine how media exposure to AMV not only affects distress, but also affects beliefs about the world and the building blocks of social-emotional health, and how parenting could moderate these relations. We also need to understand how family members mutually influence one another over time in managing media exposure to AMV. Our interdisciplinary research team (psychology, research methodology, and family communication) will achieve these aims in two phases of inquiry using qualitative and longitudinal, quantitative methods with parent-child dyads. Phase 1 involves separate focus groups with parents (N =160) and youth age 13-17 years old (N=160) from diverse geographic regions, which will lead to the design of measures of parenting and communication for Phase 2. Phase 2 will be a {four}-wave longitudinal study of parents and their child age 13-17 years old (final N=347 dyads) using daily diary methods to assess media exposure to AMV and surveys of proposed mediators, moderators, and outcomes. Our expected outcomes include improved understanding of the potentially modifiable factors of social cognitions, communication, and parenting behavior that may inform public health messaging and supports addressing media exposure to AMV.
