Both principal anchor buildings are roofed from 60,000 local English chestnut shakes, cut from Prickly Nut Wood near Lodsworth, Sussex by two local woodsmen and their teams, to ensure a truly local and sustainable product from the outset. The roofing sub-contractor, Kingsley Roofing, was appointed by the main contractor, Pilbeam Construction, to construct the unique natural roofs on the north and south anchor buildings for The Gateway Project at the Museum. Originally replaced with contemporary entrances which bore no resemblance to the original facades, work was undertaken to the now Grade II listed building to restore the original entrances.
