Fr. Brian Dinkel, IVE Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 Did you know?... January 27 is our diocese’s anniversary?

The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Jose in California is comprised of Santa Clara County. Its pa- tron saints are St. Joseph and St. Clare of Assisi. Originally, it was a part of the Diocese of Sonora in Mexico. In 1840 San Jose and the rest of the Californias became part of the Diocese of Alta & Baja, California, headquartered in Santa Barbara. In 1853, the northern half of the county became part of the Archdiocese of , while Gilroy/Morgan Hill area remained in the Diocese of Monterey. In 1922, it was decided that county boundaries would be used for dioceses and so all of Santa Clara County was now under the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

Pope (now Saint) John Paul II granted the See of San Jose Independence on January 27, 1981. The diocese was canonically erected later that year by Archbishops Pio Laghi, Apostolic Delegate to the US and John R. Quinn, Metropolitan Archbishop of San Francisco, on March 18, the vigil of the feast of St. Joseph. The first Bishop of San Jose was R. Pierre DuMaine, and the first cathedral was St. Patrick Proto-Cathedral Parish. The second Bishop of San Jose is Patrick J. McGrath, and the current cathedral of the diocese is the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph.

1. Children Rescue Love from Boredom: “In marriage, the bond of love which holds father and mother together is the children. Children rescue love from boredom, prevent it from hitting the bottom, and rescue it from the barrenness of epidermic contact. Love, by its very nature, wants to bear some fruit; thus it saves itself from the duality that is death. When love escapes the deliberate frustration of the fruits of love, it loses a tiresomeness, because life has found its meaning. Love is then discovered to be, not like the serpent that crawls on the same level, but rather like a bird that has an ascension of love and begins to taste its sweetest moments in the higher summits of flight. Are You a Registered Parishioner?

If you aƩend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.

3 main reasons why registering is important: 1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register. 2. Registering in the parish makes Sacrament prep easier when the Ɵme comes. Infant bapsms, religious educaon registraon, being a godparent/sponsor for bapsms or confirmaons, and especially geng married whether you are geng married at this parish, another parish, or having an internaonal Catholic wedding. If you’re not a registered parishioner this will greatly delay the process. 3. LeƩers of RecommendaƟon Somemes there are occasions where you will be asked to submit leers of recommendaons from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enroll- ment, scholarships, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this leer to you or your family.

Anyone, regardless of where they live and even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas, is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiƟng period from the date of registraƟon before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms or wedding preparaƟon paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months.

Registering is easy! Visit the Parish Office, call the Rectory Office (408-988-4585), or email us ([email protected]) to request a registraon form.
