Cummings Jonathan Fink John A.Wolff Dirk Iwata-Reuyl Portland State University 2016 © 2015 Arron Richard Steiner i ABSTRACT The Strawberry Volcanics of Northeast Oregon are a group of geochemically related lavas with a diverse chemical range (basalt to rhyolite) that erupted between 16.2 and 12.5 Ma and co-erupted with the large, (~200,000 km3) Middle Miocene tholeiitic lavas of the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG), which erupted near and geographically surround the Strawberry Volcanics. The rhyolitic lavas of the Strawberry Volcanics produced the oldest 40Ar/39Ar ages measured in this study with ages ranging from 16.2 Ma to 14.6 Ma, and have an estimated total erupted volume of 100 km3.

Box 751, Portland, Oregon 97207-0751, USA ABSTRACT The mid-Miocene Strawberry volcanic fi eld of northeastern Oregon is an exam- ple of intracontinental fl ood volcanism that produced lavas of both tholeiitic and calc- alkaline compositions derived by open-system processes. Until now, these dominantly calc-alkaline lavas have not been considered to have a petrogenetic origin similar to that of the fl ood basalts of the Pacifi c Northwest because of their calc-alkaline composition. These lavas are situated in between and co-erupted with the domi- nant volcanic fi eld of the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG). Due to the timing, location, and diversity of these erupted units, the Strawberry Volcanics may hold valuable information about the role of crustal modifi cation during large magmatic events such as hotspot volcanism. The earliest eruptions of the Strawberry Volca- nics began at 16.2 Ma and appear continuous to 15.3 Ma, characterized by low-sil- ica rhyolite. High-silica, A-type rhyolite eruptions followed at 15.3 Ma. The silicic eruptions continued until 14.6 Ma, with an estimated total volume up to ~100 km3.

    3. Subbasin Assessment 3.1 Subbasin Overview 3.1.1 General Description Location The John Day Subbasin is located in northeastern Oregon in the southern section of the Columbia Plateau Ecological Province. Its over five million-acre (approximately 5,067,500 acres, or 8000 mi2) drainage area is bound by the Columbia River (Lake Umatilla) to the north, the Blue Mountains to the east, the Aldrich Mountains and Strawberry Range to the south, and the Ochoco Mountains to the west. The John Day Subbasin incorporates portions of Grant, Wheeler, Gilliam, Sherman, Wasco, Jefferson, Umatilla, Morrow, Crook, Harney, Baker and Union counties. The towns within the subbasin with the largest populations include John Day, Prairie City and Condon. Populations of these and the other incorporated towns in the subbasin are listed in Table 2. See Figure 1 for a general overview map of the subbasin. The John Day River flows generally northwest for 284 miles from its origin in the Blue Mountains and joins the Columbia River at river mile (RM) 217 upstream from the town of Rufus. The mainstem portion of the John Day River begins in the Strawberry Mountains in the Malheur National Forest and flows west through the town of John Day (RM 247) and then north from Dayville (RM 212). Major rivers flowing into the mainstem are the North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork John Day rivers. The largest tributary to the John Day River is the North Fork, which originates in the Wallowa- Whitman National Forest in the Blue Mountains at elevations near 8000 feet.

Thayer The town of John Day, the John Day River valley, and the Strawberry Range, looking south and southeast. One of the Pacific Northwest's most notable outdoor recreation areas, the "John Day Country" in northeastern Oregon, is named after a native Virginian who was a member of the Astor expedition to the mouth of the Columbia River in 1812. There is little factual information about John Day except that he was born in Culpeper County, Virginia, about 1770. It is known also that in 1810 this tall pioneer "with an elastic step as if he trod on springs" joined John Jacob Astor's overland expedition under Wilson Price Hunt to establish a vast fur-gathering network in the Western States based on a major trading post at the mouth of the Columbia River. The tailings piles left by gold dredges have been leveled for building sites since the photograph was taken in 1946. The expedition arrived in the vicinity of the Grand Tetons, in what is now Wyoming, in September 1811, and with the onset of winter met disaster along the Snake River. When they ran out of food near the present site of Twin Falls, Idaho, Hunt divided the expedition into four parties to seek food and a feasible route through the canyons. As described in Washington Irving's Astoria, the party that included John Day became widely separated from the others, experienced terrible hardships while wintering with Indians near Huntington, and was eventually reduced to just John Day and Ramsey Crooks.

    2018 Surveys for Silver-bordered Fritillary (Boloria selene) & Johnson’s Hairstreak (Callophrys johnsoni) on the Malheur National Forest Prepared by Dana Ross (Entomologist, Lepidoptera Specialist) August 2018 1 SUMMARY In June of 2018, surveys were performed for potentially undiscovered populations of silver- bordered fritillary (Boloria selene) and Johnson’s hairstreak (Callophrys johnsoni) on public lands managed by the Malheur National Forest. A total of 17 mid-elevation wet meadow sites were visited in the Bear Valley, Logan Valley, Summit Prairie, North Fork Malheur River and Strawberry Mountain areas in search of the silver-bordered fritillary. Specific sites to survey for Johnson’s Hairstreak – those containing dwarf-mistletoe within mature conifer forest (particularly ponderosa pine) – were much more difficult to identify. As such, adult hairstreak surveys were conducted concurrently with fritillary surveys when potential habitats for both species overlapped. Since many of the meadows surveyed were located within areas severely impacted from recent wildfires, overlap with potential hairstreak habitats where encountered only part of the time. No new populations of either target species were discovered. A concurrent effort to inventory all butterflies encountered did, however, result in over 500 unique site-date records for 62 species, including a first Grant County record and range extension for the Garita skipperling (Oarisma garita garita). INTRODUCTION The silver-bordered fritillary, Boloria selene (BOSE) and Johnson’s hairstreak (Callophrys johnsoni) (CAJO) are considered federal “sensitive species” in Oregon and Washington (ISSSSP 2018) and as such are butterflies of conservation concern in the Pacific Northwest (The Xerces Society 2005). Within the region, each species is currently known from relatively few locations, yet a number of areas where these butterflies may occur have not been surveyed.

Fire and subsequent erosion may expose artifacts to nndesirable weathering processes and to vandahsm (Pilles 1982; Kelly and Mayberry 1979) Suppression activities associated with fire are also of concern.

Box 751, Portland, Oregon 97207-0751, USA ABSTRACT The mid-Miocene Strawberry volcanic fi eld of northeastern Oregon is an exam- ple of intracontinental fl ood volcanism that produced lavas of both tholeiitic and calc- alkaline compositions derived by open-system processes. Until now, these dominantly calc-alkaline lavas have not been considered to have a petrogenetic origin similar to that of the fl ood basalts of the Pacifi c Northwest because of their calc-alkaline composition. These lavas are situated in between and co-erupted with the domi- nant volcanic fi eld of the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG). Due to the timing, location, and diversity of these erupted units, the Strawberry Volcanics may hold valuable information about the role of crustal modifi cation during large magmatic events such as hotspot volcanism. The earliest eruptions of the Strawberry Volca- nics began at 16.2 Ma and appear continuous to 15.3 Ma, characterized by low-sil- ica rhyolite. High-silica, A-type rhyolite eruptions followed at 15.3 Ma. The silicic eruptions continued until 14.6 Ma, with an estimated total volume up to ~100 km3.
