Without a home to return to, he wound up living in cities across Africa and created this masterful soundtrack for a road trip across the Atlantic Ocean. This life-changing shift laid the groundwork for 85 TO AFRICA and what promises to be one of the most dynamic, diverse, and definitive projects of 2019. As a prelude to this journey, also shared an album trailer. In the visual, Jidenna chronicles the events leading up to his move in honest detail before giving a snapshot of what to expect on the album and this incredible journey. Watch it HERE. Take a ride on 85 TO AFRICA with Jidenna, and you may never be the same… Hip-hop needed a global voice, but it got a global leader in Jidenna. He rose to the forefront of the conversation with the double-platinum smash “Classic Man” [feat. Roman GianArthur], which garnered a GRAMMY® Award nomination for “Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.” Kendrick Lamar hopped on the remix, and a chopped- and-screwed version appeared in the Academy® Award-winning Moonlight. Meanwhile, his debut The Chief received widespread acclaim from The New York Times, XXL, The Guardian, and more. • Africa's Soft Power : Philosophies, Political Values, Foreign Policies and Cultural Exports / Oluwaseun Tella
“This seven-chapter book is a powerful testimonial to consummate African scholarship. Its analysis is rigorous, insightful, lucid and authoritative, providing fresh perspectives on selected uniquely African philosophies, and the potential ities, deployment and limitations of soft power in Africa’s international relations. The author rigorously Africanises the concept, broadening its analytic scope from its biased Western methodology, thus brilliantly fulfilling that great African pro verb made famous by the inimitable Chinua Achebe: ‘that until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter’. This is truly an intellectual tour de force.” W. Alade Fawole, Professor of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. “This book addresses an important tool in the arsenal of foreign policy from an African perspective. African states have significant soft power capacities, although soft power is not always appreciated as a lever of influence, or fully integrated into countries’ foreign policy strategies. Tella takes Nye’s original concept and Africanises it, discussing Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa via their respective philosophies of Pharaonism, Harambee, Omolúwàbí and Ubuntu. This study is a critical contribution to the literature on African foreign policies and how to use soft power to greater effect in building African agency on the global stage.” Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, Chief Executive, South African Institute of International Affairs, Johannesburg, South Africa. “Soft power is seldom associated with African states, given decades bedevilled by coup d’états, brazen dictatorships and misrule. This ground-breaking book is certainly a tour de force in conceptualising soft power in the African context.

NEW ROUTES TO THE AFRICAN DIASPORA(S): LOCATING ‘NAIJA’ IDENTITIES IN TRANSNATIONAL CULTURAL PRODUCTIONS By Olaocha Nwadiuto Nwabara A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of African American and African Studies–Doctor of Philosophy 2017 ABSTRACT NEW ROUTES TO THE AFRICAN DIASPORA(S): LOCATING ‘NAIJA’ IDENTITIES IN TRANSNATIONAL CULTURAL PRODUCTIONS By Olaocha Nwadiuto Nwabara Nigerian American Yvonne Orji–star of HBO Series Insecure–shared her self-defined expressions of her Nigerian Diaspora aka ‘Naija’ identity at a Breakfast Club online interview. She demonstrated her negotiation of her Nigerian and Black American identity, and in doing so reveals the multiplicity of her Black identity. The Nigerian Diaspora is increasingly producing normalized tropes in global Black popular culture, such as formulations of the Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, and transnational music in the Afrobeat and Naija Mix genres. Cultural productions that come from these and other Nigerian cultural industries are being created and represented by members of the Nigerian “cultural” Diaspora all over the world. These cultural representations are mapped onto cultural artifacts (e.g. film, music, literature, television, food, clothing) are reflected back into diasporic communities when accepted by its members as having meaning and telling stories of their everyday experiences. Works like these are constitutive of a growing cohort and body of cultural productions emerging from the African Diaspora in the post-colonial era. Examples examined in the current dissertation study include the now famous Nigerian Diaspora representations conveyed in cultural productions such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah, rapper Wale’s “My Sweetie” and “The God Smile,” Yewande Omotoso’s Bom Boy, Akin Omotoso’s Man on Ground, and Adze Ugah’s Jacob’s Cross to name a few.
