REGIONAL MAJOR GIFTS OFFICER, BAY AREA ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE Plant With Purpose, a Christian development organization, reverses deforestation and poverty around the world by transforming the lives of the rural poor. For more than 30 years, Plant With Purpose has been a leader in linking international community development and environmental solutions, working with smallholder farmers in strategic areas where environmental degradation and poverty intersect. Plant With Purpose currently works in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, Tanzania, and Thailand, employing an integrated methodology that combines environmental restoration, economic empowerment, and spiritual renewal. Activities include watershed restoration, reforestation, sustainable agriculture training, savings-and-loan groups, local leadership development, and supporting outreach efforts of the local Christian church. JOB SUMMARY The Regional Major Gifts Officer is the critical link in initiating and cultivating relationships with potential major donors (individuals, corporations, churches, and foundations) who have the capability of making significant financial contributions to the mission of Plant With Purpose. The Regional Major Gifts Officer will work collaboratively with the Director of Development and Marketing to build an effective development strategy in a particular region with a strong emphasis on major gifts. The Regional Major Gifts Officer will identify new prospective donors; build and maintain strong relationships with existing Plant With Purpose major donors; and professionally and effectively ask for financial gifts to further the mission and program of Plant With Purpose. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS • Manage a portfolio of donor relationships for major gift identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship • Work with the Plant With Purpose Leadership Team to leverage acquisition and retention strategies • Compellingly articulate the mission, vision, and ministry of Plant With Purpose • Using eTapestry, track communication and moves management strategies with potential and current major donors while broadening donor network at all levels through the use of innovative technology and evolving relationship management tools • Prepare written proposals, with the help of the Major Gifts Team, which effectively and compellingly describe the work of Plant With Purpose and the “return on investment” that each donor will see • Leverage the network of Plant With Purpose major donors by giving them the tools and coaching necessary to be ambassadors for Plant With Purpose 4747 Morena Blvd. Ste 100 San Diego CA 92117 • T 858.274.3718 • F 858.274.3728 • E [email protected] • W plantwithpurpose.org • Keep abreast of the mission of Plant With Purpose by interfacing with field staff, technical advisors, and visiting projects. Be able to effectively describe any Plant With Purpose project, the cost to accomplish the project, and the expected outcomes to donors • Leverage speaking opportunities for the Executive Director, Director of Strategic Partnerships, and key field and technical staff, in order to build awareness of Plant With Purpose and help secure funding for any of its projects • Ensure gifts from major donors are properly designated, thanked, and followed up on with timely information and updates on the impact each gift has accomplished • Submit activity reports each week to the Director of Development and Marketing and attend in-house meetings for the purpose of strategy and evaluation • Articulate your personal walk with Jesus Christ and relate it to the ministry of Plant With Purpose in conversations with individual donors and churches • Observe project implementation in progress thereby developing a good understanding of the context, opportunities, and challenges • Additional responsibilities as assigned by Director of Development and Marketing QUALIFICATIONS Required • Ability to build effective working relationships with donors, board members, and US and foreign colleagues • Persistence and sensitivity in building donor relationships that lead to major gifts • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills • Ability to adapt communication techniques to differing audiences • Ability to listen, synthesize, and develop ideas and information • Acute attention to detail and organization and ability to meet deadlines • Ability to initiate, self start, work independently, and seek out solutions • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, such as Excel and Word, on Mac-based operating system Preferred • Experience living or working in a developing country or cross-cultural setting • Competency with eTapestry or other donor database system • Demonstrated experience in seeking and securing major gifts Education • BA in related field; and 2 years experience in fundraising and development 4747 Morena Blvd. Ste 100 San Diego CA 92117 • T 858.274.3718 • F 858.274.3728 • E [email protected] • W plantwithpurpose.org QUALITIES DESIRED • Adaptable • Servant leader • Team player • Good listener • Open minded • Innovative and willingness to take risks • Diplomatic, respectful, and open to learning CULTURAL FIT COMPETENCIES • Demonstrate a sincere interest in the holistic mission of Plant With Purpose and the diverse communities we seek to empower • Possess a love for the poor, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or culture; and a burden to connect them with God’s love and the compassion of supporters in the United States • Ability to be a genuine team player and work in collaboration with team members from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures • Embody a commitment to the organizational values of Plant With Purpose: faith, collaboration, stewardship, sustainability, empowerment, and innovation PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
