  • 24 5. MAYOR's COMMUNICATIONS the Mayor, Mayoress, Deputy
    5. MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor, Mayoress, Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress have had a busy time since the last Council meeting on 19 February visiting many organisations and residents within the Royal Borough. One of the highlights during my year as Mayor has been the many competitions held by the Rotary clubs and other clubs, including the Lions Club in the Royal Borough. One such competition was the Maidenhead Thames Rotary Mathemagician 2013 for school years 3, 4, 5 & 6. There were two sessions with over 15 junior schools taking part. We must thank the Council officer who helped organise this competition, Shelly Duffy. The excitement in the room at the Holiday Inn in Maidenhead was a joy to behold. The Mayor and Mayoress attended the Dedication of the seat to Rifleman Daniel Hume at Boyn Grove, Maidenhead. His parents, family and friends had worked so hard to raise the money to build this wonderful circular bench and plant a cherry tree at Boyn Grove in memory of this brave soldier who was once a schoolboy at Furze Platt School. We also had the privilege of meeting his Commanding Officer when he fell in battle. On the memorial day, ten of his fellow soldiers who served with him in Afghanistan came to pay their respects and give support to Daniel Hume's parents and family. These young men were returning to war 14 days after this memorial service. We wish them well and a safe journey. On the coldest day in spring for over 100 years, the Mayor was asked to start the Coldstream Guards steeplechase in Windsor Great Park.

  • Teachers' Toolkit
2015 / 16 TEACHERS’ TOOLKIT Section 7 Creating an Arts Policy To help you and your school more effectively use and promote the arts and cultural education This toolkit has been created by A New Direction to help you and your school more effectively use and promote the arts and cultural education as a critical component of a balanced, exciting curriculum. The toolkit is comprised of seven sections: • Making the Case for the Arts in Your School • Leadership and Governance • Self-Assessment and Quality • Partnerships • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) • Documentation, Evaluation and Assessing Impact • Creating an Arts Policy In each, you’ll find basic guidance and definitions of terms, Top Tips for success, exercises and activities, and a list of relevant resources for further research and discussion. Some sections also include Case Studies of schools that have been particularly successful at delivering exciting arts activity. Each section can be used as a stand-alone guide, or taken as a whole. At the end of each section is a box titled ‘Pulling it together’, and if you complete this section in all seven toolkit sections you should be ready to take your school’s arts programme to the next level. Most of what’s in the toolkit has been inspired directly by best practice in schools, so don’t hesitate to tell us how we can make this a better, more effective resource for you. You can contact us at [email protected]. ABOUT A NEW DIRECTION A New Direction helps London create, the best opportunities possible think and learn. • We make the case for the value We work to ensure that all children of creative learning and cultural and young people get the most out of education and use this to push London’s extraordinary creative and forward structural change cultural offer.

  • Bold Beginnings
Bold beginnings: The Reception curriculum in a sample of good and outstanding primary schools In January 2017, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector (HMCI) commissioned an Ofsted-wide review of the curriculum. Its aim was to provide fresh insight into leaders’ curriculum intentions, how these are implemented and the impact on outcomes for pupils. This report shines a spotlight on the Reception Year and the extent to which a school’s curriculum for four- and five-year-olds prepares them for the rest of their education and beyond. 2 Bold beginnings – November 2017, No. 170045 Contents Executive summary 4 Key findings 5 Recommendations 7 Reception – a unique and important year 8 The curriculum 12 Teaching 16 Language and literacy 19 Mathematics 24 Assessment and the early years foundation stage profile 26 Initial teacher education 29 Methodology 31 Annex A: Schools visited 32 Annex B: Online questionnaire 34 3 www.gov.uk/ofsted Executive summary A good early education is the foundation for later supposed to teach it. This seemed to stem from success. For too many children, however, their misinterpreting what the characteristics of effective Reception Year is a missed opportunity that can leave learning in the early years foundation stage (EYFS)2 – them exposed to all the painful and unnecessary ‘playing and exploring, active learning, and creating consequences of falling behind their peers. and thinking critically’ – required in terms of the curriculum they provided. During the summer term 2017, Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI) visited successful primary schools The EYFS profile (EYFSP)3 is a mechanism for statutory in which children, including those from disadvantaged summative assessment at the end of the foundation backgrounds1, achieved well.

  • Appendix a Interim Education S106 Methodology
DRAFT FOR CABINET REPORT APPENDIX A INTERIM EDUCATION S106 METHODOLOGY This interim Education S106 developer contributions methodology applies for the period from 8th December 2015 until the point at which the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is implemented in the Royal Borough. 1. LEGAL CONTEXT 1.1 The legislation that sets out the circumstances in which local authorities can seek developer contributions are contained in the following: The Planning Act 2008. The Community Infrastructure Levy Regulations 2010 (as Amended). Localism Act 2011. The National Planning Policy Framework 2012. The Growth & Infrastructure Act 2013. 1.2 Guidance is set out in the National Planning Practice Guidance 2012. 1.3 The CIL regulations set out three tests that must be met to justify requests for contributions. They must be: Necessary to make the development acceptable in planning terms. Directly related to the development. Fairly and reasonably related in scale and kind to the development. 1.4 The regulations also introduced a restriction on the use of S106 developer contributions. Regulation 123 states: (3) Other than through requiring a highway agreement to be entered into, a planning obligation (“obligation A”) may not constitute a reason for granting planning permission to the extent that (a) obligation A provides for the funding or provision of an infrastructure project or provides for the funding or a provision of a type of infrastructure; and (b) five or more separate planning obligations that— (i) relate to planning permissions granted for development within the area of the charging authority; and (ii) which provide for the funding or provision of that project, or provide for the funding or provision of that type of infrastructure, have been entered into on or after 6th April 2010.
