Nearly every child’s dream became reality for David Wolf when Bang! Zoom! he went straight To the moon, Alice

ell, maybe not all the way lo the moon, but a journey into space, nevertheless However, the nervousness that many people might expect to encounter undertaking such a task didn't really affect Dr David A Wolf. W’That launch is the ultimate culmination of all your hard work.” Wolf said "It is probably the most spectacular eight and a half minutes of your life - it's certainly the most critical. "You hit about 3G* (three times the normal drag of the earth's gravitational force), and encounter lots of vibration going from zero to 17,000 mph in eight minutes. Thai shuttle is absolutely venous about getting into orbit. "1 would be nervous or scared if I didn’t know the quality of our team. My big worry was just not making it into orbit and coming back down." he said But make it he dkl. and he remained up there 14 days last fall before returning to Barth, completing the longest shuttle mission up lo that time. ‘Throughout the delays I thought more about the guests than myself," he said. NASA needed three countdowns lo get Columbia going, with various equipment failures postponing

“All my family and friends got up so early. I didn’t really want them to have to do that again. Whether I launch today or tomorrow doesn't matter. I work at NASA every day."

Wolf credits the hard work of others for the success of their mission, but he doesn't tack a r6sum£ replete with hard work of his own. The Indianapolis native graduated from North Central High School in 1974. received a bachelor's degree from Purdue in 1978 and a doctorate in medicine from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1982. After completing his internship at Methodist Hospital. Wolf completed the U.S. Air Force flight surgeon primary training in San Antonio. Texas. "1 can’t stress enough how important education has been for me." Wolf said "North Central had programs in physics, biology and chemistry that provided excellent preparation for * college. Really, the whole Indiana educational system deserves a pal on the back." Whatever accolades the system receives. Wolf*s father said most of the credit must go to David "He far and away surpassed our wildest expectations. His mother and I are certainly very proud of him. "He always talked about being an astronaut, from his early teens all through college. But it wasn’t just talk - he thoroughly prepared himself by reading books on space and the astronauts. He really pursued his career in a professional manner." said Dr. Harry C. Wolf, a local physician Education isn't everything, though, as Wolf also held numerous jobs throughout his career He worked as a research scientist at the Indianapolis Center for Advanced Research from 1980-83. While there he developed digital signal and image processing techniques to produce high-resolution medical ultrasound images. Wolf said the "slate of the art" images have aided significantly in the detection and treatment of tumors. Wolf joined the Indiana Air National Guard as a medical corpaman in 1982. and continues his duties there today as a flight surgeon. W olf s father said David loves the Guard, as evidenced by his commute. The younger Wolf travels from his home m Texas for weekend drills with the 113th Fighter Squadron in Terre Haute "As a corpsman. I realty started learning some solid skills ... in aerospace medicine from many of the flight surgeons already there. They were all pretty smart guys, and they helped me become a full-fledged flight surgeon by the time I finished my internship (at Methodist)." he said. In addition to his medical duties in the Guard. Wolf flew for several years as a weapons system officer. "Most people just get ‘familiarity' training, but I wanted more," he sanl. He got his wish, with two ov erseas deployments where he flew F-4 Phantom jets. Now he flics F- 16s and T-38s whenever he can "All astronaut pilots fly T-38s for proficiency. They’re safe and cheap to operate, but it is a handful. There's no auto pilot on that thing." he said.

Of course, all work and no play can get pretty boring. But Wolf is far from boring, according to Alccc McIntyre, crew secretary on W olfs shuttle mission. Wolf could not be described as a quitter. He knew the “You can't just observe these things, you have to "David knows when it’s time to conduct business.
