And 4.5Km; SO 283 689 Housman knew about it: “And lads knew trouble at Knighton When I was a Knighton lad” By this stage in the Event we hope that you are enjoying the rather wonderful scenery of the but perhaps you are confused as to which country you are in. Distinctly English names crop up on the Welsh side of the border and conversely Welsh appears on the English side. Some names are corrupted, surely Dolley should be Dolau, while others are hybridised as in the (in ).

It is indeed border land and the term “March” is derived from the Saxon word “Mearc” for boundary. Now tranquil it has had a much troubled past. You will walk past many fortifications from those times; , Richard’s Castle, Croft Ambrey, Wigmore, , Bishop’s Castle, More, to name just a few.

Offa, first king of the English, created the barricade you now walk that still delineates the cultural divide between the Celt and the Saxon though the political boundary has drifted a bit over the years. Do you feel history rising through the soles of your feet?

Then, though there was a Norman influence before 1066, it was King William who formally created the Marches by establishing the Marcher Lordships whose duties were intended to block Welsh military adventures and whose powers enabled them to rule as warlords. They could raise private armies, wage war without being directly accountable to their sovereign, make their own laws and levy taxes. Thus people living in their Lord’s jurisdiction were subject to what became known as the “customs of the March”. Housman in his poem “The Welsh Marches” sums up the present political situation: “The sound of fight is silent long That began the ancient wrong Long the voice of tears is still That wept of old the endless ill.” Leg 5. The valley of the River Clun is officially recognised as one of the few tranquil areas of England being a place distant from a large urban area, air port, industry or motorway. So not much has changed since Housman wrote that: “Clunton, Clunbury Clungunford and Clun, Are the quietest places Under the sun In valleys of springs of rivers By Ony and Teme and Clun The country for easy livers, The quietest under the sun”

And if you are thinking of the London 100 next year consider what he went on to write:

“By bridges that Thames runs under In London, the town built ill T’is sure small wonder If sorrow is with one still” Leg 6. Profile of this leg Comment. The views from the Long Mynd are spectacular and wide ranging across the Welsh Marches. Indeed you can see almost to the finish of the Event. Some of you may be thinking, at this stage in the walk that you can accept the despair of retirement from the Event but not the hope that you will finish with several hours of fatigue and soreness still to endure. Housman’s most famous lines may then seem relevant to your condition: “Into my heart an air that kills From yon far country blows: What are those blue remembered hills, What spires, what farms are those? That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain. The happy highways where I went And cannot come again” Leg 12. Profile of this leg Comment. “Oh! Come you home of Sunday When Ludlow streets are still And Ludlow bells are calling To farm and lane and mill

Or come you home of Monday When Ludlow market hums And Ludlow chimes are playing “The conquering hero comes”

Come you home a hero, Or come not home at all. The lads you leave will mind you Till Ludlow tower shall fall”
