As consequências dessa carência são várias, mas, principalmente, a dificuldade de acesso aos novos conheci- mentos por parte de estudantes, pesquisadores e leitores em geral. De outro lado, há prejuízo também para os autores, frente à tendência de se valorizar a produção intelectual conforme as publicações, em uma difícil relação entre quantidade e qualidade. Constata-se, ainda, a velocidade crescente e em escala cada vez maior da utilização de recursos informacionais, que permitem a divulga- ção e a democratização do acesso às publicações. Dentre outras formas, destacam-se os e-books, artigos full text, base de dados, diretórios e documentos em formato eletrônico, inovações amplamente utilizadas para consulta às referências científicas e como ferramentas formativas e facilitadoras nas atividades de ensino e extensão. Documentos, periódicos e livros continuam sendo produzidos e impressos, e continuarão em vigência, conforme opinam estudiosos do assunto. Entretanto, as inovações técnicas podem contribuir de forma complementar e oferecer maior facilidade de acesso, barateamento de custos e outros recursos que a obra impressa não permite, como a inte- ratividade e a elaboração de conteúdos inter e transdisciplinares. Portanto, é necessário que os laboratórios e núcleos de pesquisa e ensino, que agregam professores, técnicos educacionais e estudantes na produção de conhecimento, possam, de forma convergente, suprir suas demandas de publicação também como forma de extensão universitá- ria, por meio de edições eletrônicas com custos reduzidos e em divulga- ção aberta e gratuita em redes de computadores. Essas características, sem dúvida, possibilitam à universidade pública cumprir de forma mais eficaz suas funções sociais. Dessa perspectiva, a editoração na universidade pode ser descen- tralizada, permitindo que várias iniciativas realizem essa convergência com autonomia e responsabilidade acadêmica, editando livros e perió- dicos de divulgação científica, conforme as peculiaridades de cada área de conhecimento no que diz respeito à sua forma e conteúdo. Por meio dos esforços do Laboratório de Sociologia do Trabalho (Lastro), da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) – que conta com a participação de professores, técnicos e estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação –, e por iniciativa e empenho do prof. Fernando Ponte de Sousa, a Editoria Em Debate (ED) completa oito anos de realizações, sempre com o apoio do Middlebury College/Vermont, que acreditou no projeto. A revolução social é só uma dentro da seqüência de inteiros. A lei da revolução não é uma lei social, é imensuravelmente maior, é uma lei cósmica, universal – tal como a lei de conservação de energia e a lei de perda de energia (entropia). Um dia uma fórmula exata será estabelecida para a lei da revolução. E, nesta fórmula, as nações, as classes, as estrelas – e os livros serão representados por valores numéricos. Vermelha, ígnea, próxima da morte – assim é a lei da revolução; mas aquela morte é o nascimento de uma vida nova, de uma estrela nova. E fria, azul como o gelo, como os gélidos infinitos interplanetários, é a lei da entropia. A chama passa de um vermelho ígneo para um cor-de-rosa uniforme, suave, não mais próximo da morte, mas sim do conforto-produtor; o sol envelhece e se torna um planeta adequado para estradas, lojas, camas, prostitutas, prisões: esta é a lei. E para rejuvenescer o planeta, devemos incendiá-lo, devemos forçá-lo a desviar da estrada tranqüila da evolução: esta é a lei. A chama, suficientemente verdadeira, amanhã ou depois estará fria (no Livro de Gênesis os dias são anos, ou ainda a eternidade). Mas já hoje deveria existir alguém que pudesse prever isto; deveria existir alguém que falasse hereticamente de amanhã. The artist’s first project in Russia will consist of two interconnected pieces: an installation in front of the Museum, and an object on its rooftop. In Garage Square, visitors will find a one- hundred-meter-long fence supporting thousands of images of rainbows painted on wood panels by kids with various disabilities from all over the country. Garage Rooftop will also be host to a ten- meter long rainbow that spells out OUR MAGIC HOUR. This message celebrates the inauguration of the first Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art, which is taking place simultaneously inside the Museum. Having emerged in Rondinone's work in 1997, first as a sculpture for a public space, the rainbow has since become one of his most recognizable images, a convergence of visual and poetic energies—according to the artist, each rainbow represents a complete work of poetry. When Rondinone made site visits to Moscow, he determined that public engagement would be one of the key aspects of the new work, as well as wanting to produce something that was responsive to the context of Garage. Acknowledging the Museum’s interest in developing country wide networks, he asked that his project should be far-reaching. Initiated by Garage, the conference has been called to provide a context for discussion on Almaty’s modernist architecture (1960s–1980s), presenting it to the international expert community and launching a conservation campaign for this extremely important part of the former Kazakh capital’s architectural history. The Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow and the Parisian museum Réunion des musées nationaux – Grand Palais are cooperation partners of the international creative agency Avantgarde, which was commissioned with execution and overall coordination for the Astana Contemporary Art Center (ACAC). The response of artistic thought to the machine, as well as the intersection of political and social propaganda, literature, art and cinematography will be examined. Special attention will be paid to the legacy of the experimental practices, such as paper architecture, oral history, temporary projects for International Exhibitions, law, geography, material and visual culture, cultural anthropology, stage design,and the projects for National Competitions. Vanguard/Avant-garde* It is not my intent to produce yet another narrative of how Lenin and the party victimized the avant-garde. Rather, it is to argue that conceptions of temporality have political implications,1 and that blindness to this fact contributed to the historical failure of the artistic avant-garde and the political vanguard alike.2 It is difficult to see this situation clearly, because the historical actors themselves did not. By taking into account the interdependence of national and architectural history, it shows a shift in perception from the united cultural region to a set of national republics with their own histories and traditions. The thesis proves that national architecture of the Soviet Union, and in Central Asia in particular, was a visible issue in public architectural discussions.     III. “Heritage at Risk“ – Case Studies from Moscow and the Former Soviet Union 63 Anke Zalivako 2000 –2006: Monitoring Moscow’s Avant-garde Architecture The Russian avant-garde of the 1920s to early 1930s made one of the most important contributions to the in- ternational Modern Movement as well as to the 20 th cen- tury historical and architectural heritage. Moscow as the new capital of the young Soviet Union became one centre of the architectural avant-garde, developing its ideas and erecting quite a number of public buildings and housing for the anticipated communist society after the revolution of 1918. About 250 –300 buildings were built in Moscow between 1925 and 1932. Some of them became outstand- ing icons for the rational ideas of Russia’s constructivist architecture. However, most of them are not in good shape today due to either no, low or incorrect maintenance, or so-called “euroremont” – a cheap cover-up refurbishment. Siegelbaum Michigan State University A doorman opens the door onto a hall finished in burnished birch. The buffet is decked out with glass whatnots, real chinaware [and] soft armchairs. Behind each table are busts, pictures and mirrors.... A trio is playing.1 In his recent ethnographic history of the Nivkhi of Sakhalin Island, Bruce Grant employs the “Soviet House of Culture” as a metaphor of cultural construction and the “hybrid identities produced by the Soviet state.”2 Yuri Slezkine’s rendi- tion of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) as a communal apart- ment (kommunalka), where each national group had its own room but shared the kitchen, bathroom, and corridors, serves a similar metaphorical purpose, en- abling the reader to envision the complexities of superstate–nationality interac- tion in more familiar spatial terms.3 Both the communal apartment and the house, or palace, of culture were venerable Soviet institutions. Each was the product of the reimagining of sociability in the wake of the October Revolution, representing different types of imagined communities that only subsequently as- sumed material reality. The communal apartment has been the subject of nov- els (both utopian and dystopian), film, song, painting, economic and cultural his- tory, and several (absurdist) exhibits.4 By contrast, little attention has been given to palaces of culture or to the less grandiloquently titled workers’ clubs.5 This article foregrounds workers’ clubs and palaces of culture as sites of or- ganized leisure and cultural activities.

Contemporary architects and designers use citations of this controversial period, ironically, patronising it. But the city, even in its post-modernistic manifestation keeps following the main trends of the so-titled 1935 Master Plan for the Reconstruction of the City of Moscow. This plan, incomparable in its scope with any other undertakings of that kind, was meant to change the look of the ancient city dramatically: the main streets and squares were broadened, huge ensembles appeared, the Moscow Metro and Volga Cannel were laid. It was both practical and propagandistic, aimed to solve urgent city problems and to immortalize the name of Josef Stalin. The utopian image of the Communist paradise was created in order to make people work harder for the sake of a brighter future. It contrasted with images of gunned kolkhoz women and men, as a part of the militarisation process. A complex system of floral, military and human symbols with its convincing potential to tell stories, give advice, promise or warning was formed.
