The application seeks to vary a condition which currently means that three cottages at Treaslake Farm may only be occupied as holiday accommodation. There are four further cottages which are covered by other permissions and, although all of them are occupied as holiday lets, three of them are not restricted by condition. Permission is sought to remove the holiday condition from Owl Cottage but unlike the other unrestricted cottages, it is the intention that this one would be occupied as a permanent dwelling.

  • The Church of St. Mary and St. Giles, Buckerell
The Church of St. Mary and St. Giles, Buckerell 1 The Early History of Buckerell Before 1066 the area now known as Buckerell did not have a distinctive name and up to 1231 many names were in use. As Old Owlescombe it was one of the manors of Ralph de Pomeroy, one of the knights in William the Conqueror’s army. He was richly rewarded for his service to the king and received from him the gift of six manors in Devon. Being the Lord of the Manor, and also a wealthy man, it would have been expected of him to provide a place of worship for his few tenants. It is not known for certain whether such a place existed prior to this period. The Saxons were Christians but they were not builders of stone edifices, using mainly timber instead, and it is possible that they might have had a prayer station where they assembled in the open. They disliked being shut in. The new Norman Lords usually erected simple wattle and daub buildings with thatched roofs and it is likely that the first place of worship built by them in Buckerell was of this construction. These simple structures were not strong and soon perished, so no record of them exists. Later the Normans built short stone chancels and short naves and some of these remain incorporated into later buildings. In 1198 William, Lord Brewer, the founder of Dunkeswell Abbey, Torre Abbey and Polslow Priory, bought ‘Owlescombe’ from Henry de la Pomeroy and may have built a church at Buckerell.

The Member in question has, since being consulted on the latest revised proposals for the development, resigned from the Council. In so doing, no further comments were made regarding these. The application is therefore being reported to the Committee on the basis of a conflict of view based upon observations received in opposition to the original plans. Sunningdale is a two bedroom 'Woolaway' bungalow that occupies the more elevated part of an elongated roadside plot within open countryside to the north of Buckerell. The site also houses a detached garage/workshop building around 32 metres to the north of the main dwelling on lower ground. There are existing vehicular accesses at both the northern and southern ends of the plot. The proposal seeks the replacement of the existing main dwelling with a log cabin style equivalent, also two bedroom, in part on the same footprint as the present building but mainly to its south, together with the replacement of the outbuilding with a triple garage with storage space above.
