M. BARRIE THE ADMIRABLE CRICHTON A COMEDY ACT I AT LOAM HOUSE, MAYFAIR A moment before the curtain rises, the Hon. Ernest Woolley drives up to the door of Loam House in Mayfair. There is a happy smile on his pleasant, insignificant face, and this presumably means that he is thinking of himself. He is too busy over nothing, this man about page 1 / 170 town, to be always thinking of himself, but, on the other hand, he almost never thinks of any other person. Probably Ernest's great moment is when he wakes of a morning and realises that he really is Ernest, for we must all wish to be that which is our ideal. We can conceive him springing out of bed light-heartedly and waiting for his man to do the rest. He is dressed in excellent taste, with just the little bit more which shows that he is not without a sense of humour: the dandiacal are often saved by carrying a smile at the whole thing in their spats, let us say. Ernest left Cambridge the other day, a member of The Athenaeum (which he would be sorry to have you confound with a club in London of the same name). He is a bachelor, but not of arts, no mean epigrammatist (as you shall see), and a favourite of the ladies. -

Village headmaster William Gillie is killed by the furniture van coming to take away his possessions, as he is being evicted from his home when his school is closed down. He has spent his entire teaching career fighting the Education Board’s narrow idea of schooling, trying to inspire his pupils to strive for great creative lives. Having lost his school and his home and with none of his pupils quite finding the wings to fly free, his life is examined by a heavenly Procurator and Judge. -

The answer seems to be the same today as it was two decades ago when Male and Female, directed by- Cecil B. de Mille and starring Gloria Swanson, was first shown on the screen. After many years, this picture will be restored to view when the Museum of Modern Art shows it Wednesday and Thursday, July 30 and 31, at 4 P.M. as part of the Cycle of 300 films tracing, the history and development of the motion picture from 1895 to 1940. The popularity of Male and Female (1919) like that of The Philadelphia Story (1940) seems rooted firmly in a persistent Ameri can movie dream: luxuryand glitter, sex with a dash of humor and daring, lively adventure, and a firmly moral, socially correct end ing. Mr. de Mille began his glamour!zation of James Matthew Barriers Play* The Admirable Crichton, by re-naming it Male and Female. For his movie version he retained the basic story of the handsome butler of a titled English household who, by virtue of native strength and ability, becomes master of the lordly family when all are cast away on a desert island. The haughty Lady Mary becomes his humble and loving slave, a point which Mr. de Mille further emphasizes by a vision-sequence drawn from the refrain of Henley*s poem: "When I was a King of Babylon and You Were My Christian Slave." In their essentials, Male and Female and The Philadelphia jStory, follow the same fundamental pattern. -

A Reader's Guide ON THE SAME PAGE 2020 MADISON LIBRARY DISTRICT Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet James Barrie, often referred to as J.M. Barrie, was the ninth of ten children born to David Barrie, a hand weaver, and the former Margaret (Mary) Ogilvy in Kirriemuir, Scotland on May 9, 1860. Little Jamie had a complicated relationship with the matriarch of this strict Calvinist family. His maternal grandmother had died when Mary was eight, leaving her to run the large household. She had no real childhood of her own which may have tainted her relationships with her children. Mary had a very clear favorite, Jamie’s older brother David. When Jamie was six and David fourteen, David was killed in an ice skating accident, and Mary plummeted into an emotional abyss. Attempting to gain her love and give her some consolation, little Jamie began dressing in his dead brothers clothes, tried to act like him, give his familiar whistles, etc. At one point, he walked into a room where his mother was sitting in the dark, her eyes grew large and she asked, “Is that you?” to which Jamie replied, “No, it’s no him; it’s just me.” The only thing that seemed to give his mother any comfort was knowing that David would never grow up and leave her behind. Jamie was a small child, short (Even as an adult, he never passed five feet three inches.) and slight who drew attention to himself through storytelling. He spent much of his school years in Glasgow where his two oldest siblings, Mary Ann and Alexander, taught at the academy. -

Too theatrical by half? The Admirable Crichton and Look Back in Anger stephen lacey T doubt that British theatre has been very important to the development of British cinema, and – the input of television in general and Channel 4 in particular notwithstanding – it remains so, as a quick glance at the number of film adaptations from stage plays from the 1980s and early 1990s testifies. This is clearly the case in the 1950s, not least because a great many films have their origins in the theatre. I estimate that of the 1,033 British films of the 1950s listed in David Quinlan’s British Sound Films, some 152 were based on stage plays.1 However, the provision of source texts is not the only issue, and this figure should be set alongside the 330 films in the decade that were based on novels and short stories, the 18 that came from radio and the 22 adapted from television. If theatre seems more important than other media to the cinema of the 1950s, then it is partly because there are deeper connections, and it is worth reminding ourselves of some of these. The institutions of theatre and cinema were, by the 1950s, bound to each other. Many of the dominant personnel of the cinema – actors, directors, technicians and writers – had backgrounds in the theatre. Even such luminaries of the period as Kenneth More and Dirk Bogarde began as stage actors. (More began in variety before moving into films via the legitimate theatre and Bogarde worked in both provincial repertory theatre as well as the West End before becoming a screen actor.) However, it was not a relationship between equals. -
