That building may be historic but it would probably cost too much to repair it. That is if Boston even had money budgeted for library repairs, which it doesn’t. PHANTOM GOURMET Talk of a centralized East Boston library branch in the wake of the Orient Heights closing does make sense but the location near the very end of what’s left of Neptune Hot Dog Safari Road is ridiculous as Daffy Duck would say. What changes happened to make the area safer? My friend, City Councilor Sal LaMattina, spoke about how very few folks were injured in this traffic night- mare of an intersection. Of course that is correct. Very few people walk over toward the dead-end section of Neptune, except the folks who live there. I stood by the parcel of land picked for the library and looked toward East Boston. Walkers are probably safer walk- ing along Runway 22 than in the middle of Bennington Street. Cars are traveling all over the place where traffic lights compete with each other for attention. Someone made note that the library would be close to Wood Island T Sta- tion as if folks from Eastie would take the Blue Line to the library. By the way, remember who uses libraries? Old folks and children. Who wants to risk their lives to return a li- brary book or listen to a club speaker. I’ve been told as his- toric as the remaining East Boston library is, it is falling apart and there is no money apparently in the budget for repairs. However, there is money to build a new library. I do have one question. Once built, how will the new library be maintained? Just asking. Bottom line: If this site was declared by our politicians as too unsafe for donuts, why is it safe for our elders and children to use as a library. Before rushing this idea forward, shouldn’t the people of East Boston be heard on Enjoying the Hot Dog Safari from left to right: Ayla and Arianna Brown, WCVB-TV the soundness of this idea?
