We have just witnessed the conclusion of perhaps the greatest baseball season in the history of the game. Not one, but two men broke the "unbreakable" record of sixty-one home-runs set by New York Yankee great Roger Maris in 1961;2 four men hit over fifty home-runs, a number that had only been surpassed fifteen times in the past fifty-six years,3 while thirty-three players hit over thirty home runs;4 Barry Bonds became the only player to record 400 home-runs and 400 stolen bases in a career;5 and Alex Rodriguez, a twenty-three-year-old shortstop, joined Bonds and Jose Canseco as one of only three men to have recorded forty home-runs and forty stolen bases in a 6 single season. This was not only an offensive explosion either. A twenty- year-old struck out twenty batters in a game, the record for a nine inning 7 game; a perfect game was pitched;' and Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays won his unprecedented fifth Cy Young award.9 Also, the Yankees won 1.     Dana Middle School 1775 Chatsworth Blvd. San Diego, CA 92107 Sub-district: C Cluster: Point Loma Year School Opened: 1942 Grades: 5-6 1 2 1 Roof Maintenance 2 Baseball Field & Stadium Facility Upgrades Located in the Loma Portal neighborhood of Point Loma, Dana served as a junior-senior high school until it closed in 1983 due to declining enrollment. The school reopened in 1998 as a middle school due in large part to a strong community lobby effort. Originally built in 1942, the school’s masonry construction is ideal for its sound abatement quality that reduces the noise of departing aircraft from Lindbergh Field. Four of the five permanent buildings were built in the 1940s, and the fifth, a multipurpose building, was completed in 2003. The campus includes a softball field and a shared use baseball field; the latter is the practice and home field of Point Loma High School’s baseball team. The field is named after Point Loma alum and former Major League Baseball pitcher David Wells. Wells is currently PLHS’ head baseball coach. After collaborating with former pro player Bill Lee on Lee's autobiography, The Wrong Stuff , Lally wrote Pinstriped Summers: Memories of Yankee Seasons Past , a book that focuses on the team's history from the time the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) bought the team in 1965 until the 1982 season. During this period, the Yankees experienced great success, winning four American League pennants and two World Series. They also experience "down" years, including a last-place finish in 1966.
