This article is an open access publication Abstract Pesticides used to protect the crops from pest attack in the agricultural felds pose harmful efect to the non-target organisms such as human and many other aquatic and terrestrial organisms either directly or indirectly through food chain. The present study was conducted to monitor a total of seven pesticide residues under organochlorine, organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides in three diferent sources of pond water, paddy feld water and tube-well water from Nagarpur Upazila and paddy feld water in the company of Dhaleshwari and Gazikhali river water from Saturia Upazila, Bangladesh. A total of 40 water samples were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with ultraviolet detector. Among the organo- phosphorus pesticides, diazinon was detected in eight water samples at a concentration ranging from 4.11 to 257.91 μg/l whereas, malathion was detected only in one water sample at a concentration of 84.64 μg/l and chlorpyrifos pesticide was also detected only in one water sample and the concentration was 37.3 μg/l. Trace amount of carbaryl was identifed but it was below the detection limit. None of the tested water samples was found to be contaminated with DDT or its metabolites (DDE and DDD). -
Cropping Pattern, Intensity and Diversity in Dhaka Region
Bangladesh Rice J. 21 (2) : 123-141, 2017 Cropping Pattern, Intensity and Diversity in Dhaka Region N Parvin1*, A Khatun1, M K Quais1 and M Nasim1 ABSTRACT Sustainable crop production in Bangladesh through improvement of cropping intensity and crop diversity in rice based cropping system is regarded as increasingly important in national issues. Planning of agricultural development largely depends on the authentic, reliable and comprehensive statistics of the existing cropping patterns, cropping intensity and crop diversity of a particular area, which will provide guideline to our policy makers, researchers, extensionists and development workers. The study was conducted over all 46 upazilas of Dhaka agricultural region in 2015 using pretested semi-structured questionnaire with a view to document the existing cropping patterns, cropping intensity and crop diversity in the region. From the present study, it was observed that about 48.27% net cropped area (NCA) is covered by exclusive rice cropping systems whereas deep water rice occupied about 16.57% of the regional NCA. The most dominant cropping pattern Boro−Fallow−T. Aman alone occupied about 22.59% of net cropped area (NCA) with its distribution over 32 upazilas out of 46. The second largest area was covered by single Boro cropping pattern, which was spread over 44 upazilas. Total number of cropping patterns was observed 164. The highest number of cropping pattern was identified 35 in Tangail sadar and Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka district and the lowest was seven in Bandar of Narayanganj and Palash of Narsingdi district. The lowest crop diversity index (CDI) was reported as 0.70 in Dhamrai followed by 0.72 in Monohardi of Narsingdi. -

The study area also offers better residential opportunity and food support for Dhaka city. The major focus of this study is to find out the spatial and temporal changes of land use/cover and its effects on urbanization while Dhaka city is an independent variable. For analyz- ing land use/cover change GIS and remote sensing technique were used. The maps showed that, between 1989 and 2009 built-up areas increased approximately +12%, while agricultural land decreased −7%, water bodies decreased about −2% and bare land decreased about −2%. The sig- nificant change in agriculture land use is observed in the south-eastern and north eastern site of the city because of nearest distance and better transportation facilities with Dhaka city. This study will contribute to the both the development of sustainable urban land use planning decisions and also for forecasting possible future changes in growth patterns. -

AGENDA The North Eastern parts of Bangladesh is being flooded by water from northern hill region and several number of dyke/embankment are collapsed and flooded the villages and city areas Maulvibazar and Sylhet districts. Total 10 upazilas are worst affected and about 1 Million people are affected by this flood since 12 June 2018. Total 8 people died due to this flash flood and about 4000 hector agricultural land with crops goes under water in Maulvibazar district. An urgent NAWG meeting was called to discuss the roles of NAWG regarding this flood. The brief agendas were 1. Review and discuss the flood situation 2. Share the available information on recent flood 3. Way Forward of NAWG regarding coordinated needs assessment 4. AoB SUMMARY AND ACTION POINTS 1. The available summary flood situation were presented and discussed. 2. Different organization shared field of flood affected areas and flood affected community. 3. As the damages are not severe and flood water is receding as well as community affected people started to return to their houses; NAWG will not go for detailed needs assessment now. 4. NAWG member will closely observe the situation and forecast information. If the situation deteriorate NAWG will take decision about CNA. 5. NAWG will keep close contact with district focal and share the situation update regularly. -

Inventory of LGED Road Network, March 2005, Bangladesh
The Chief Engineer Local Government Engineering Department PREFACE It is a matter of satisfaction that LGED Road Database has been published through compilation of data that represent all relevant information of rural road network of the country in a structured manner. The Rural Infrastructure Maintenance Management Unit of LGED (former Rural Infrastructure Maintenance Cell) took up the initiative to create a road inventory database in mid nineties to register all of its road assets country-wide with the help of customized software called, Road and Structure Database Management System. The said database was designed to accommodate all relevant information on the road network sequentially and the system was upgraded from time to time to cater the growing needs. In general, the purpose of this database is to use it in planning and management of LGED's rural road network by providing detailed information on roads and structures. In particular, from maintenance point of view this helps to draw up comprehensive maintenance program including rational allocation of fund based on various parameters and physical condition of the road network. According to recent road re-classification, LGED is responsible for construction, development and maintenance of three classes of roads, which has been named as Upazila Road, Union Road and Village Road (category A & B) in association with Local Government Institution. The basic information about these roads like, road name, road type, length, surface type, condition, structure number with span, existing gaps with length, etc. has been made available in the road inventory. Side by side, corresponding spatial data are also provided in the road map comprising this document. -
