GO50 WALK PROGRAMME Guided outdoor activities for the 50 plus age group WALKING IN AND AROUND SURREY PROGRAMME October – December 2019 The GO50 programme aims to introduce people in the 50+ age group to a healthier lifestyle and the benefits of regular exercise. Walking with others - socialising as you exercise - adds significantly to the beneficial effects. Regular exercise can: improve balance and flexibility; lower blood pressure; defend against heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes; help maintain cognitive function; reduce depression and anxiety. We suggest a donation of £2 per person. If you are a taxpayer, we can reclaim the tax on your donations at no extra cost to you, as long as we have your signature and permission to claim Gift Aid. Ask the leader for details. No advanced booking required - just turn up at the start and join in. GO50 activities are led by experienced volunteers who will meet you at the start and lead the way. Please wear walking boots or other suitable footwear. All walks cross stiles unless otherwise noted. Bring water & a snack. No children or dogs, please. Use pub car parks only if you intend to use the pub afterwards. Please be aware of your own fitness levels and, if in doubt, consult your doctor before starting a new exercise programme. Postcodes given are nearest available to the start and may not correspond to the exact starting point. (T) indicates accessible by public transport. Travel information is available from Traveline on 0871 200 2233 or www.traveline.info GO50 Health Walks are shorter walks more accessible to beginners run by Age UK Surrey and supported by the national Walking for Health programme. Leaders reserve the right to cancel or amend an activity if they feel that it is unsafe to proceed. From The Star Inn and Post Office in Bentley village, proceed east (towards Farnham) for 250 yds, then turn left along School Lane for 125 yds to car park on right. Start time: 10.30 Leader: CLIVE Lunch: Bring a picnic Rural circuit to Binsted, where Field Marshal Montgomery’s grave is in the churchyard; return via Froyle Mill and Isington, with views of the River Wey. TQ 166 511 / RH5 6AA Start time: 10.15 for 10.30 Leader: ROSEMARY Lunch: optional at the vineyard. Varied walk through the vineyard, onto Ranmore and back along the North Downs Way. One steep climb, gentle descent. Lovely views! An easy walk around the lake, through 18th Century Landscaped Valley Gardens, past Roman Ruins and Polo Fields. TQ 155 488/ RH4 3JT From Dorking turn left off A25 after ½ mile, following brown sign ‘Bury Hill Fisheries’ to the car park. Turn left here, rejoin walk directions at From Denbies car park, go left of main building and point 6 by coffee shop/toilets of Polesden Lacey. 7 miles scenic walk 1 then right onto cement road up hillside. As paved around a popular area Go through entrance gate, continue up footpath, views path veers right, turn right in between vines and tree 5 on the North Downs Way to left and passing folly of columns on left.     TILLINGBOURNE AT WORK An undulating walk in the Surrey Hills, starting from Chilworth station and passing through farmland, woodland and parkland. The route crosses the Tillingbourne stream, which used to power a number of powder, paper and cornmills in the area. Part of the walk follows the Pilgrims Way, running from Winchester to Canterbury. Start point: Chilworth station Grid ref: TQ031472 Ordnance Explorer 145 Guildford and Farnham Survey Map: Distance: 12 km (7½ miles) Typical time: Allow at least 4 hours, with extra time for stops or detours Footwear: Stout shoes, boots, Wellingtons Transport: Trains run between Redhill and Reading via Guildford, and stop at Chilworth approximately every 2 hours, seven days a week (service provided by First Great Western. Buses run between Dorking and Guildford via Chilworth (Arriva 21/22/32). Buses also connect Guildford and Cranleigh (Arriva 25). Get off at the bus stop east of Chilworth Station by Lockner Farm to start the walk from this point. If you wish to shorten the walk, these buses also stop at Chantry Lane in Shere (from point 4, continue north along Chantry Lane to the junction with Upper Street), or from Silent Pool on the A25 (from point 5 turn right and walk the A248 Albury Street to reach the main road). Parking: There is no car parking available at the station. If travelling by car, park in car park on Guildford Lane to the east of St. Martha’s Hill, and start the walk from point 6.
