M.A. (Ed) Letter 70 22nd November 2013 Dear Parents, Carers and Year 9 students Bronze Arts Award (Year 9) On Wednesday 20th November your child attended a presentation, expressing an interest in an extra- curricular opportunity for a small group of Year 9 students. For the second year the school is offering the opportunity offered to students to work towards a Level 1 qualification in the Arts and Arts Leadership. This programme is called the Bronze Arts Award, a national award presented by Trinity College London. The Arts Award is designed for students of any ability to extend their participation in Arts activity. More information on this qualification can be found on the Arts Award website: www.artsaward.org.uk. After the success of last year’s group, we are hoping another group of students will complete the scheme this year. This will continue to be a new joint venture between two leading departments of The Hemel Hempstead School: Performing Arts (represented by Mrs Gregory-White, Drama teacher) and History (represented by Miss Swales). We are excited to be working with the Dacorum Heritage Trust, based in Berkhamsted as part of an Arts project, where students will be required to work from an artefact stimulus held in The Dacorum Heritage Trust’s collection. As part of the course, students are required to complete 22 hours guided learning hours with another 18-20 hours themselves. This could include rehearsal time as well as time spent producing a portfolio logging the process This log will be sent off as part of the moderation process. The guided learning sessions will take place on a Monday after school for 1 hour (3.45-4.45pm), although some sessions may be extended to two hours should students require this time to complete their portfolio work. There is a cost to this programme, should students wish to be involved, as outlined below: Initial payment of £6.50. This is made up of £4.50 charged by Trinity College to enrol students and supply them with course materials. The remaining £2 is the charge from The Dacorum Heritage Trust for their expertise in a historical stimulus workshop as part of the Arts project undertaken by the students. Moderation payment of £20. When the students have completed their portfolios they will be submitted for moderation. Again this cost is set by Trinity College and is subject to change. Moderation will take place in April/May 2014. Following successful moderation students will receive a certificate as proof of their successful completion of the course. Contd… The initial payment is payable at the session on the 2nd December 2013 should students be successful in their application to the programme. If you are worried about the cost of the scheme please write to the Finance Department at the School explaining your circumstances and we may be able to help. We have been highly impressed by the interest and enthusiasm already shown by Year 9 students tregarding this opportunity and hope to give as many students the opportunity as possible. Unfortunately, there may need to be a restriction on numbers if demand is too high to be manageable It is therefore imperative that students spend time completing the application form attached to this letter. Applications need to be handed in to either Mrs Gregory-White or Miss Swales on Monday 25th November. Please do not send money at this point. We will inform students whether or not they have been accepted for the scheme via registers. All accepted students will be required to attend the first session on Monday 2nd December 2013.     NEWSLETTERA No. 67 SUMMER 2012A www.dacorumheritage.org.uk New Exhibition & Photographic Display Dacorum Borough Council and Dacorum Heritage Trust opened their photographic exhibition to commemorate The Queen‟s Diamond Jubilee in a ceremony on Thursday 10th May. The exhibition was officially opened by Mayor Cllr. Mrs. Gillian Chapman, marking the start of many local events in celebration of The Queen‟s Diamond Jubilee. The Mayor of Dacorum, Councillor Mrs. Gillian Chapman declared the exhibition formally open to all. She added, “I am proud to be Mayor during such a significant year and wanted to recognise Dacorum‟s rich heritage by commissioning the Diamond Jubilee photographic exhibition. It is wonderful for people to be able to see their glorious borough through the ages and learn more about the links Dacorum has to The Queen.” Dacorum Borough Council and Dacorum Heritage Trust have worked together to create an exhibition in Hemel Hempstead Civic Centre. Artefacts from around the borough and photographs from throughout the ages will be on display. An interactive touch screen is also available in the Reception area for people to browse facts, photographs and stories about Dacorum. Roger Hands, Chairman of Dacorum Heritage Trust commented, “We are passionate about recording and preserving the area‟s history and heritage. Who are we and what do we do? Dacorum Heritage Trust Ltd. (DHT) works to promote all aspects of heritage within the area. We provide the Borough’s Heritage Service, including a comprehensive education service, outreach activities, exhibitions, displays, loan boxes, lectures and publications as well as an extensive website. DHT is centred at The Museum Store in Berkhamsted, which has been specially converted to provide a storage facility, where artefacts and documents are catalogued and stored. The Trust’s curatorial team consists of a full-time and a part- time museum professionals, supported by two part-time staff and a large and loyal team of volunteers. DHT has full Museum Accreditation, awarded by the Arts Council England. With no dedicated museum building, we are still hopeful regarding The Bury in Hemel Hempstead, and fully support Dacorum Borough Council with plans for a new museum. The Trust has the following Mission Statement: To collect and record the history of the Borough of Dacorum. To interpret and display the collections in order to encourage interest and appreciation of the heritage of Dacorum. The Trust work closely with local history societies, each with their own unique collections. The last Conservation Strategy was approved in July 2007, and now requires updating. Significant changes have occurred: at the national level, the National Planning Policy Framework and the new Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act have been introduced; at Borough level, a new Core Strategy has been adopted. The NPPF recognises that good design is a key aspect of sustainable development, is indivisible from good planning, and should contribute positively to making places better for people. Our Local Plan meets the NPPF requirements in providing a positive strategy for the conservation and enjoyment of the historic environment including heritage assets most at risk through neglect, decay or other threats. The policy recognises that heritage assets are an irreplaceable resource and should be conserved in a manner appropriate to their significance. Recognising the wider social, cultural, economic and environmental benefits that conservation of the historic environment can bring, this strategy represents Dacorum’s commitment to protect and enhance the historic built environment by sustaining and enhancing the significance of heritage assets and putting them to viable uses consistent with their conservation; ensuring new development makes a positive contribution to local character and distinctiveness; and opportunities to draw on the contribution made by the historic environment to the character of a place.

    Chipperfield News October 1999 Horticultural Society Saturday September 18th was blustery and had a distinctive autumn feel, totally in keeping with our last show of the season which was held in the village hall. The Autumn Show was well attended and the hall was filled with a fine array of vegetables and colourful flowers. Frank Venables carried off most of the silverware thanks to a fine display of vegetables and flowers while his wife Linda scored well in the domestic section. Frank won the Timberlake cup for the best onions in the show, the G A Usher Challenge Bowl for the most points in the flower section as well as the Silver Rose Bowl for the highest number of points in the combined vegetable, fruit and flower sections. On top of all that Frank also receives a load of manure courtesy of Roger Pritchard to help him prepare his garden for doing it all again next year. Mike Leon was a worthy runner up in the competition for most points in the show and took away the W Bates Cup while Mick Langstons fine display of dahlias was rewarded with the Dahlia Society Bronze Medal. The Autumn Show is also the time to reward consistent performance throughout the year and Kathy Ward won the Peter Franz cup for the most points scored in the domestic section during the year while Leigh Tyler took the Junior Challenge Cup for the most points in the Junior section. We are always blest with some wonderful displays of flower arranging at our shows and this was to prove no exception with Eileen Foulgham once again showing her superiority by winning the C P Brousson Challenge Trophy for her efforts in these classes.
