  • Anti-Trafficking Coalition FOSTA Letter to US House of Representatives
January 16, 2018 The Honorable Paul Ryan, Speaker U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20510-0001 The Honorable Kevin McCarthy, Majority Leader U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20510-0001 Dear Mr. Speaker and MaJority Leader McCarthy: We write as organizations and individuals working to end human trafficking with allies across the country, including Wisconsin and California, and concerned citizens who respect the pressures you face conducting the nation’s business. But the issue we write about is literally a matter of life and death. Last month in Portland Oregon, the family of a 24-year old mother, murdered on Christmas by a man who bought her for sex on Backpage.com, sued the website for allowing sex trafficking in its ads. 1 The case is similar to testimony heard by the Senate Commerce Committee from the mother of a 16-year-old daughter murdered by a man who bought her via Backpage.com on Christmas Eve. 2 Congress granted victims of human trafficking a private right of action under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) of 2003 to provide protection and to help prevent this despicable crime. Yet court after court, has ruled the Communications Decency Act (CDA) of 1996 shields Internet Service Providers like Backpage.com from accountability. As a result, online trafficking has surged, online entities continue to facilitate trafficking with impunity, and victims have no effective legal redress. The First Circuit Court of Appeals pointedly stated, “[T]he remedy is through legislation.” 3 1 http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2017/12/family_of_woman_killed_in_port.html# 2 https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/true-crime/wp/2017/09/19/mother-of-slain-teen-makes-tearful-plea- for-congress-to-amend-internet-law/ 3 http://media.ca1.uscourts.gov/pdf.opinions/15-1724P-01A.pdf However, in the strong opinion of the undersigned organizations, the remedy is not the Substitute to HR 1865, Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA), approved by the House Judiciary Committee on December 12, 2017.

  • The 2004 Election a Matter of Faith? 1 David E
10397-01_Ch01.qxd 3/26/07 10:41 AM Page 1 The 2004 Election A Matter of Faith? 1 David E. Campbell ew observers of American politics deny that in recent Fyears religion has come to play an increasingly important role in the nation’s elections, especially the presidential election. To some, per- haps many, religion may appear to be a new factor in national politics. But today’s focus on religion is really just a variation on what has been a common theme throughout U.S. history. In 1800, Thomas Jefferson had to deal with accusations that he was an atheist; in the late 1800s, William Jennings Bryan invoked biblical themes to support economic policy; in 1928, Al Smith faced anti-Catholic mobs on the campaign trail; in 1960, John F. Kennedy too had to forestall anti-Catholic sentiment that, while muted when compared with what Smith faced in 1928, lingered nonetheless. Religion, then, has long been a feature in national elections. Yet that does not mean that the religious cleavages of the past correspond to those of the pres- ent. Rather, the last thirty years have seen a re-sorting of the parties’ electoral coalitions along religious lines. No longer are Democrats and Republicans divided along the old lines, defined by whether they are Catholic or Protestant. Instead of religious denomination, the parties are divided by religious devo- tional style—that is, a way of being religious. People who are more devout— regardless of denomination—are more likely to favor the GOP. Obviously, such a statement is a generalization.

  • What Happened?: the 2020 Election Showed That Libertarians Have a Long Way to Go Before They Can Become a Page 1 of 4 National Movement
USApp – American Politics and Policy Blog: What Happened?: The 2020 election showed that libertarians have a long way to go before they can become a Page 1 of 4 national movement. What Happened?: The 2020 election showed that libertarians have a long way to go before they can become a national movement. In the 2020 presidential election, the Libertarian Party candidate, Jo Jorgensen, gained 1.2 percent of the vote, less than half the party’s 2016 election result. Jeffrey Michels and Olivier Lewis write that despite signs that pointed towards the potential for libertarian voters to be king makers in the 2020 election, their dislike of Donald Trump turned many to Joe Biden and the Democratic Party. Following the 2020 US General Election, our mini-series, ‘What Happened?’, explores aspects of elections at the presidential, Senate, House of Representative and state levels, and also reflects on what the election results will mean for US politics moving forward. If you are interested in contributing, please contact Rob Ledger ([email protected]) or Peter Finn ([email protected]). In the 2016 US Presidential election, the former Republican Governor of New Mexico, Gary Johnson gained 3.3 percent of the national vote share, the highest on record for a Libertarian Party presidential candidate. This modest milestone could have been written off as the result of a race featuring two highly unpopular mainstream candidates, Donald Trump and former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. But it might also have portended a more meaningful movement in US electoral politics, one in which a growing Libertarian Party – or at least an increasingly independent bloc of libertarian voters – gains the critical mass to tip the race.
