  • IDS CENTER Minneapolis, Minnesota Kemper Waterproofing Membrane Ensures Crystal Court’S First Dry Winter
Project Profile: IDS CENTER Minneapolis, Minnesota Kemper waterproofing membrane ensures Crystal Court’s first dry winter The IDS Center’s Crystal Court, part of the landmark IDS Tower of the Minneapolis skyline and the centerpiece of one of the world’s most extensive skyway systems, is the primary gathering place in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is the one place where business and commerce converge daily in temperature-controlled comfort without having to go outside. Over four years ago, Tom Cowhey, the IDS Center Operations Manager for the past quarter- century, asked AMBE LTD., a roofing, waterproofing and building envelope consulting firm based in Minneapolis, to determine what product would seal and waterproof the roof of the IDS Crystal Court. The Crystal Court has eight different levels with a total of 289 skylights separated by a narrow 10-inch gutter. Waterproofing these gutters between the skylights has been extremely difficult, and the yellow “wet floor” signs were never consistent with the quality and character of this icon property. With leaks that had occurred in the Crystal Court since initial construction, the task of finding the right waterproofing and roofing system proved a major undertaking for Richard Grobovsky of AMBE LTD. The problem was how to run an inconspicuous waterproofing project directly above the estimated 50,000 people who walk through the Crystal Court on a daily basis. Design of the waterproofing system is difficult in itself, but the safety of the general public, safe access and safe working surfaces for the roofers, and the project’s appearance were all factors that required consideration.

http://www.kankyo.metro.tokyo.jp/en/index.html Introduction In the year 2000, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) replaced the Tokyo Metropolitan Pollution Prevention Ordinance with the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Security Ordinance, which covers countermeasures for vehicle pollution, chemical substances and climate change. The reason for the replacement was a shift in Tokyo’s environmental problems from industrial pollution mainly attributable to factories to urban and domestic pollution due to vehicle emissions and chemical substances, which may sometimes be related to climate change problems. In 2002, we started two programmes on which Tokyo’s present climate change strategy has been based: Tokyo Green Building Program for new buildings and Tokyo Carbon Reduction Reporting Program for existing large facilities. Since 2005, we have been promoting environmentally superior developments by introducing a mechanism to evaluate and disclose facilities’ efforts made in the programmes. In Tokyo’s Big Change - The 10-Year Plan developed in 2006, we set a goal of reducing citywide greenhouse gas emissions by 25% below 2000 levels by 2020 to make Tokyo a city with the least environmental impact in the world. Then in 2007, we announced the Tokyo Climate Change Strategy, which clarified our basic attitude toward tackling climate change for the next 10 years. Following a revision of the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Security Ordinance in 2008, we launched the Tokyo Cap-and-Trade Program for large facilities, the world’s first urban cap- and-trade scheme that covers office buildings as well, and the Carbon Reduction Reporting Program for small and medium facilities, committed to advancing our climate change strategy ever since then.

  • Earthquake-Resistant Design for Architects Revised Edition to Whom This Report May Interest
Earthquake-resistant Design for Architects Revised edition To whom this report may interest, There are many earth quake prone countries in this world, not only Japan Therefore, at various occasions we were requested to explain our efforts and initiatives for reducing the risk of future earth quakes. After the Great Hanshin Earthquake, we had studied various methods to reduce the damages to ensure inhabitants lives, through collaborations of architects, structural engineers, building mechanical engineers and various specialists. Those considerations were realized in the book “Taishinkyohon” by the Japan Institute of Architects. The book was also revised after the Great East Japan Earthquake experiences. Owing to the language barriers, we are not able to explain easily our initiatives to outsiders. Therefore, we had tried to publish it in an English edition. Nevertheless through economic diculties, English editions had not been translated until now. In 2014, NPO called Japan Aseismic Safety Organization (JASO), decided to donate for the English translation, and furthermore their members donated for editing in English to form this report as well. A free report with internet download http://www.jaso.jp/ Since original Japanese book was published by publisher Shokokusha in Tokyo who still has the right to publish this book, we finally agreed that we would not sell commercially, but disperse only as a delivered free booklet with internet downloads. Therefore, anyone who likes to study is able to download from the HP of JASO who is holding their
