One reason these types of vandalism and hate crimes may be happen- ing is the economy. If you doubt this, look at the history of the Nazi Party in Germany. Throughout the 1920s, the Nazi Party was basically a small mi- nority in Germany outside its strongholds in Bavaria and certain rural ar- eas. As late as 1930, the Nazis only got 18 percent of the vote. However, the Great Depression made people disenchanted with the traditional, moder- ate German political parties (the Social Democrats and the Christian Demo- crats). In despair, people looked for more dramatic answers to their plight, and membership in both the Nazi Party and its extremist rival, the Commu- nist Party, shot up dramatically. Similarly, in New York City in the 1920s, violent anti-Semitism was not much of a problem in New York, despite quotas against Jews in the uni- versities and the fact that certain country clubs, professions and neighbor- hoods were more or less closed to Jews. Then, the Great Depression hit, and unemployment reached drastic levels. People were angry and frustrated, and Nazi-type groups took advantage of that anger. In some working-class neighborhoods in New York in the late 1930s, fascist groups like the Chris- tian Mobilizers and the Christian Front regularly harassed Jews, often forc- ing them off the sidewalk, and the police sometimes turned a blind eye. Social change also gives rise to a growth in hate groups. For example, in the years after World War I, many young people began to rebel against their parents, listening to jazz, drinking (which was illegal at the time), watch- ing sexy stars like Rudolph Valentino and Theda Bara on the screen and in- dulging in “heavy petting” in the back seat of cars. Around the same, the Bolshevik Revolution happened in Russia, and suddenly, every Eastern Eu- ropean or Southern European immigrant was a potential bomb-thrower, communist or anarchist in the eyes of small-town America. Amidst this background, the Ku Klux Klan became a nationwide force, targeting immi- grants, blacks, Jews and Catholics. Contrary to the stereotype that the Klan was a southern phenomenon, it was very strong in Illinois, Indiana, Michi- gan Oregon, parts of California and Colorado. Eventually, the Klan declined. All in all, it seems to me, maintaining a prosperous economy with high levels of employment and cultivating an atmosphere of respect for many different groups seem to be the best antidote for the kind of hate that we saw in the defacement of the Jackie Robinson statue at MCU Park.
