Wield Wield Upper and Lower 1.0 PARISH Wield 2.0 HUNDRED Fawley 3.0 NGR 462900 138800 (Upper Wield) 463650 140400 (Lower Wield) 4.0 GEOLOGY Clay-with-Flints and tertiary debris (both settlements). 5.0 SITE CONTEXT There are two settlements within the parish that today may be regarded as hamlets: Upper Wield and Lower Wield. Both are notable for their timber framed and thatched cottages. 5.1 The parish church is at Upper Wield, situated at c. 171m AOD at the east end of a ridgeway route from the west. Approximately 100m south-east of the church there is a large green upon which roads converge at all cardinal points. In 1839, the principal cluster of buildings, including the church, was around the north-west side of the green but also stretching north-westwards along a lane for 150m to Wield Manor and a road junction just beyond (Map 3 / 1). There is no surface water at Upper Wield and wells must have been important. There is a well in the front garden of Wield Manor. The large number of ponds (Map 3) was clearly a necessity. Limited C20 housing has occupied the south side of the green and the west side of the lane to Wield Manor House. 5.2 Lower Wield is 1.6km to the north-north-east at c 160m AOD. The Tithe Map shows that in 1839 there was a cluster of farms around a green with smaller properties hugging the western margin of a lane that runs southwards. This arrangement has changed little but the green, and its ponds, has been absorbed into fields and gardens.

These were created by the Boundary Commission in its previous review, and they are working well. The proposals were adopted when I was County Councillor for Alton Town (including Holybourne). The Boundary Commission used my submission as an example of good practice. They agreed that there was more in common between Alton and Holybourne which are a continuous development. There is little in common between any of the surrounding villages and Alton, as they are well-separated from Alton. Rural villages are unlikely to share the same ambitions as a small town. • In the Beginning... the Farnham Herald – the Haslemere Herald
A Privately owned, Independent, Family Newspaper Established 1892 In the beginning... The Farnham Herald series of newspapers began life as the brainchild of E W Langham, who started a small printing office in premises off South Street in Farnham, in 1892. Its popularity and rapidly increasing sales and circulation inspired Mr Langham to open an office in West Street, Haslemere, and produce a Haslemere Herald in 1896. The two papers were so successful that, on 11th September 1897, Mr Langham decided to combine them and introduced the "Tudor" masthead, which still exists today. "The paper for small advertisements" became one of its slogans. Various titles and new areas were added. The advertising increased and the circulation grew. In the early 1900s Mr Langham brought the Heralds to 114 West Street, the site of the old Farnham Post Office. Mr Langham died in 1967 aged ninety-seven. Sir Ray Tindle CBE DL, the present chairman, subsequently purchased the Herald in 1969 and continued it as a family business, installing fully computerised production equipment. Family-owned and under Sir Ray’s control, the Herald went on to launch a further four titles - so that today, we have a series of much-loved and well-read publications based entirely on local people and local business: The Farnham Herald – The Haslemere Herald – The Alton Herald The Liphook Herald – The Bordon Herald – The Herald The Herald is a strong and well-established, community newspaper full of local news, interesting stories, events, a diary page, a letters page, motoring, and lots more. With its fantastic property paper, Herald Homes included inside, the Herald covers everything you need; whether you are looking for a new home, new car, a local service - or advertising your own business to the local people – you need look no further than the Herald.
