In order to achieve this, China became the world’s factory and began the mass production of low-quality products, copied from the West, using extensive and unskilled labour. It was in 2012 when, with the arrival of Xi, the government abandoned both discretion and its poor production model. The new target was now to appear as a leading power in trade and technology and, although often overlooked, also in the military field. The initiative commonly known as the New Silk Road is nothing short of an enormous infrastructure investment programme almost all over the world, through which vast amounts of now much more refined Chinese exports circulate, while the country imports the raw materials it requires to feed its voracious productive machinery. In the technological field, the project is called Made in China 2025, and the objective is to lead new disruptive technologies: artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, nanorobotics, blockchain, big data, renewable energies, etc. The 100th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China will be celebrated in 2049. This is the date chosen to put the finishing touches to these and other strategic projects so that China can assert itself as a world leader in trade and technology. This is also the deadline for restoring the country’s territorial integrity, with an eye on Taiwan, which explains the important and sustained budgetary effort the country has been making to modernize its Armed Forces.
