Breakfast food Amazing tales of ready-to-eat breakfast cereals Melanie Warner Boulder, Colorado, US Emails: [email protected] Introduction There are products we all know or should know are bad for us, such as chips (crisps), sodas (soft drinks), hot dogs, cookies (biscuits), and a lot of fast food. Nobody has ever put these items on a healthy list, except perhaps industry people. Loaded up with sugar, salt and white flour, they offer about as much nutritional value as the packages they’re sold in. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, the obvious stuff. The reach of the processed food industry goes a lot deeper than we think, extending to products designed to look as if they’re not really processed at all. Take, for instance, chains that sell what many people hope and believe are ‘fresh’ sandwiches. But since when does fresh food have a brew of preservatives like sodium benzoate and calcium disodium EDTA, meat fillers like soy protein, and manufactured flavourings like yeast extract and hydrolysed vegetable protein? Counting up the large number of ingredients in just one sandwich can make you cross-eyed. I first became aware of the enormity of the complex field known as food science back in 2006 when I attended an industry trade show. (FB6). Some readers may know that until 1980 the FB6 theme was never part of any Adventist statement of faith.     News and Information from the North American Division January 19, 2018 U.S. Court of Appeals for Tenth Circuit Rules for Plaintiffs in Kellogg Sabbath Accommodation Case Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America Hails “Watershed” Ruling On Jan. 17, 2018, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit issued a decision in favor of Richard Tabura and Guadalupe Diaz, former employees of Kellogg USA, who were terminated in 2012 for violating the company’s policy mandating work on Saturdays (the day Tabura and Diaz observed as their Sabbath). The plaintiffs later sued Kellogg for religious discrimination, charging that the company did not provide the religious accommodations mandated under Title VII. The Tenth Circuit validated that claim, saying that in order for an accommodation to be reasonable that Kellogg would have to have provided employees the opportunity to avoid working on all Saturdays, not just some. “The Seventh-day Adventist church is pleased with this watershed decision upholding the critically important right of Americans to adhere to their religious beliefs in the workplace,” said Todd McFarland, associate general counsel for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In its decision, the justices determined that Kellogg’s “neutral employment policy” – in which all employees desiring a day off were subject to the same requirements – may not rise to the level of reasonable accommodations where personal religious practices were concerned. As such, the Tenth Circuit reversed the prior district court decision, sending the case back to the district court for trial (D.C. No. 1:14-CV- 00014-TC-PMW). On March 22, 2017, two former Kellogg employees made their appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit after a lower court found insufficient evidence that the two Adventist plaintiffs were treated unfairly when they were fired for failing to work on Sabbath.

It is Sabbath. Sometimes, I would get home late, distracted by an after-school football game; I would then have to face my mother, and the bamboo rod never failed to leave its marks. It was a challenge to sing praises after the ordeal. These are enduring memories of my home. In many ways, the home I grew up in defined my identity as a Seventh-day Adventist. It was forged in an environment where I saw my mother practice giving God the first place in our family life, in times of joy and adversity.

    Will Keith Kellogg Kellogg Company Founder Will Keith (W.K.) Kellogg was born April 7, 1860. W.K., along with his brother, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, was the co-inventor of flaked cereal. Although he lacked a formal education beyond the sixth grade, W.K. Kellogg forever changed the way we eat breakfast. When he died on October 6, 1951, at the age of 91, he had amassed a fortune and enriched the lives of people in his hometown of Battle Creek, Michigan, and millions of others around the world. The future world-renowned benefactor and cereal industry pioneer became a traveling broom salesman at the age of 14. At age 20, he started as a clerk at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, also known as the San, where his older brother, John Harvey Kellogg, was physician- in-chief. It was there that he discovered the process for making cereal flakes. W.K. Kellogg would eventually become bookkeeper and manager of the world-famous hospital, which put virtually any task outside of medicine under his purview. For years, he assisted his brother in research aimed at improving the vegetarian diet of the San's patients, especially in the search for a wheat-based granola. Their many experiments with grains would lead them to stumble upon a major food innovation. In 1894, W.K. Kellogg accidentally left a pot of boiled wheat to stand and become tempered. When it was put through the usual rolling process, each grain of wheat emerged as a large, thin flake. W.K. persuaded his brother to serve the food in flake form, and it was an immediate favorite among the patients.

    A 1944 Court Ruled “Raisin Bran” Couldn’t Be Trademarked As It Was “Merely Descriptive Of The Ingredients.” National Raisin Bran Cereal Day is observed and enjoyed each year on November 15. Since 1926, raisin bran cereal has been manufactured by a number of different companies under a variety of brand names, including Kellogg’s Raisin Bran, General Mills, Total Raisin Bran and Ralcorp’s Post Raisin Bran. U.S. Mills introduced Skinner’s Raisin Bran to the United States in 1926, which was the first brand on the market. A good source of dietary fiber, raisin bran cereal is the star of the day, not just at breakfast but all day, on National Raisin Bran Cereal Day. “Skinner’s Raisin Bran” was the first bran brand on the market, introduced in the United States in 1926 by U.S. Mill. During his incarceration, former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein preferred Raisin Bran cereal for breakfast given by his American prison guards. The first cold breakfast cereal, Granula, was invented in the United States in 1863 by James Caleb Jackson, operator of Our Home on the Hillside which was later replaced by the Jackson Sanatorium in Dansville, New York. Twenty-six percent of Americans snack on cereal during the day; 61 percent of that group is women. Kellogg’s was the first company to advertise on the Times Square billboard in New York. Forget tigers, frogs and birds, Kellogg’s raised the bar the bar on cereal mascots in 1966 when it introduced the center of our solar system as it’s new mascot for their Raisin Bran Cereal.

(ac_bnphotos / iStock) By Howard Markel, Zócalo Public Square smithsonian.com July 28, 2017 The popular singer and movie star Bing Crosby once crooned, “What’s more American than corn flakes?” Virtually every American is familiar with this iconic cereal, but few know the story of the two men from Battle Creek, Michigan, who created those famously crispy, golden flakes of corn back in 1895, revolutionizing the way America ate breakfast: John Harvey Kellogg and his younger brother Will Keith Kellogg. Fewer still know that among the ingredients in the Kelloggs’ secret recipe were the teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist church, a homegrown American faith that linked spiritual and physical health, and which played a major role in the Kellogg family’s life. For half a century, Battle Creek was the Vatican of the Seventh-day Adventist church. Its founders, the self-proclaimed prophetess Ellen White and her husband, James, made their home in the Michigan town starting in 1854, moving the church’s headquarters in 1904 to Takoma Park, outside of Washington, D.C. Eventually, Seventh-day Adventism grew into a major Christian denomination with churches, ministries and members all around the world. One key component of the Whites’ sect was healthy living and a nutritious, vegetable and grain based-diet.
