NEW YORK YANKEES NOTES  The Yankees trail the ALDS vs. Boston, 2-games-to-1…is their eighth time trailing an ALDS, 2-1; have forced a Game 5 four times and have won two of the seven series (2017 vs. Cleveland, 2001 vs. Oakland)…are 5-1 in potential elimination games since the start of the 2017 postseason…the Yankees dropped to 13-7 in ALDS Game 3’s (5-3 at home)…the Red Sox have not won more than one game in six of their last regular-season series at Yankee Stadium since 9/27/16 (Boston won 2-of-3 from 8/11-13/17).  Set a franchise record for runs allowed in a postseason game, previously a 15-2 loss in 2001 Game 6 at Arizona…was their largest margin of defeat in a postseason game (15R), the largest defeat by a home team in Major League postseason history…marked the sixth time they allowed at least 13R in a postseason game, and are 4-2 in the following game (each ensuing game occurred in the same series).  Had their seven-game postseason home winning streak snapped…tied for the third-longest postseason home winning streak in club history (10 straight over 1998-2000, eight straight over 1927-36, seven straight over 1937-41)…had allowed 4R-or-fewer in a postseason club-record-tying nine straight home games (since 2012 ALCS Game 2 vs. Detroit).  RHP Luis Severino (3.0IP, 7H, 6ER, 2BB, 2K) started and took the loss…exited with a 3-0 deficit…were the most runs allowed by a Yankee in a postseason game since CC Sabathia in 2012 ALCS Game 4 at Detroit (3.2IP, 6R/5ER), the most permitted at home since Orlando Hernández in 2000 ALCS Game 6 vs. Seattle (7.0IP, 6ER).  In three regular season home starts vs. Boston in 2018, was 2-0 with a 1.37 ERA (19.2IP, 3ER).  Severino (97.6 mph) and Nathan Eovaldi (97.2) ranked first and third in average fastball velocity during the regular season (min. 100.0IP).  RHP (1.0IP, 1H, 2ER, 1BB) made his first career pitching appearance, pitching the ninth…is the second position player to pitch in a postseason game in Major League history, joining Toronto’s Cliff Pennington in 2015 ALCS Game 4 vs. Kansas City…his brother, INF Andrew Romine, has made seven regular season pitching appearances with Detroit (2014, ’16-17) and Seattle (2018)…surrendered the lone HR of the game.  According to Elias, 48 different position players pitched in Major League games in the 2018 regular season, the most in a season in the Expansion Era (since 1961)…the Yankees were one of five clubs to not use a position player on the mound.  The Yankees have not used a position player to pitch in a regular season game since 8/25/15 vs. Houston (INF Brendan Ryan), the second-longest active streak in the Majors behind Colorado (INF Todd Zeile on 9/14/02 vs. Los Angeles-NL).  Yankees batters were held without an XBH for the first time since the 2015 ALWCG vs. Houston…had homered in all 7G of their postseason home winning streak…have lost six consecutive home games when not hitting a HR (since 6/30), and are 4-8 in such home games in 2018.  DH Giancarlo Stanton (2-for-4) had two of the Yankees’ five hits…including both the regular and postseason, is hitting .357/.402/.631 (30-for-84) with 15R, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 5HR and 17RBI in 21G vs. Boston in 2018.  2B Gleyber Torres (1-for-3) has hit safely in all 3G of the series.  SS Didi Gregorius (0-for-2, 1RBI, 1SH) drove in the Yankees’ only run with a fourth-inning fielder’s choice.

BOSTON RED SOX NOTES  The Red Sox defeated the Yankees in ALCS Game 3, improving to 2-1 in the series…their 16R marked their second-most runs in a postseason game in franchise history (scored 23R in 1999 ALDS Game 4 vs. Cleveland).  Was the fourth game in postseason history to be decided by at least 15R…the Red Sox hold the Major League record with a 16-run win in 1999 ALDS Game 4 vs. Cleveland (23-7 win)…the others were Cleveland’s 17-2 win in 2001 ALDS Game 3 vs. Seattle and Atlanta’s 15-0 win in 1996 NLCS Game 7 vs. St. Louis…this was the largest margin of victory by a road team in postseason history.  Was their first postseason win on the road since 10/28/13 (lost four games on the road from ALDS Game 1 on 10/6/16 – ALDS Game 2 on 10/6/17)…are 6-10 in their last 16 postseason road games (since 2008 ALCS Game 7 on 10/19/08).  Are 93-84-1 all-time in postseason play.  Are 10-12 in 22 postseason matchups vs. the Yankees and 5-6 in the Bronx…have won six of their last seven games postseason games against the Yankees.

 2B/1B Brock Holt (4-for-6, 3R, 5RBI) became the first batter in Major League history to hit for the cycle in a postseason game…marked the second time in his career he has accomplished the feat (also 6/16/15 vs. Atlanta).  His 5RBI marked the most by a Red Sox batter in a postseason game since Dustin Pedroia recorded 5RBI in 2007 ALCS Game 7 vs. Cleveland.  Recorded two of his hits in the fourth inning, including a two-run triple…entered tonight with only two triples over his last three seasons (both in 2018).  In five career postseason games, has hit .500/.500/1.125 (8-for-16) with 4R, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 2HR and 6RBI.  Red Sox batters scored 7R in the fourth inning, tying their franchise record for most runs scored in an inning in a postseason game (fourth time, also fifth inning of 2007 World Series Game 1 vs. Colorado, eighth inning of 2007 ALDS Game 3 at Los Angeles-AL and the fourth inning of 2004 ALDS Game 1 vs. Anaheim).  Their 18H marked their most in a postseason game since recording 21H in 1999 ALCS Game 3 vs. the Yankees.  Scored at least 7R in an inning four times during the regular season, with two of those coming vs. the Yankees (9R in the sixth on 4/10 and 8R in the fourth on 8/2).  RHP Nathan Eovaldi (7.0IP, 5H, 1ER, 0BB, 5K) earned the win in his postseason debut, allowing only 1ER in 7.0IP…has made four starts vs. the Yankees with the Red Sox (including the postseason), going 2-0 with a 0.39 ERA (23.0IP, 11H, 2R/1ER, 3BB, 18K, 0HR).  Elias confirmed that Nathan Eovaldi’s start tonight marked the seventh time that a former Yankees pitcher made a postseason start against the Yankees as a visitor, joining Cleveland's Jake Westbrook (in the 2007 ALDS), the Mets' Al Leiter (in the 2000 World Series), Kansas City's Larry Gura (in the 1977 ALCS) and the Milwaukee Braves' Lew Burdette (3x: once in the 1958 World Series, twice in the 1957 World Series).  LF Andrew Benintendi (2-for-3, 2R, 1 , 3RBI, 2BB, 1SB) hit a bases-clearing double in the fourth…is hitting .364/.437/.545 (28-for-77) with 15R, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 1HR, 15RBI, 10BB and 6SB in 20 games vs. the Yankees in 2018 (including the postseason).  1B Steve Pearce (1-for-4, 1R) hit an RBI single in the fourth…has 15RBI in his last nine games vs. the Yankees (including postseason).  C Christian Vázquez (2-for-6, 1R, 1RBI) drove in Boston’s first run with an RBI single in the second…marked his first career postseason RBI.  RF Mookie Betts (2-for-5, 2R, 2RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to record his first career postseason RBI…has hit safely in eight of his 10 career postseason games.  Is hitting .390/.484/.675 (30-for-77) with 25R, 11 doubles, 1 triple, 3HR, 17RBI and 15BB in 20 games vs. the Yankees this season (including the postseason).  DH J.D. Martinez (1-for-3, 2RBI, 2BB) reached base safely three times…hit a sac fly in the third and an RBI single in the seventh.
