Aquatic Molluscs of the Mrežnica River

Nat. Croat. Vol. 28, No. 1., 99-106, Zagreb, 2019. Results of a malacological survey of the Mrežnica River are presented. The molluscan assemblages of this river between the boundary of the Eugen Kvarternik military area and the inflow to the Korana River near Karlovac were studied from 2013 to 2018. Altogether 29 aquatic molluscs (19 gastropods, 10 bivalves) were found at 9 sites. Theodoxus danubialis, Esperiana esperi, Microcolpia daudebartii and Holandriana holandrii were dominant at most of the sites. The molluscan assemblages were very similar to assemblages documented during previous research into the Korana River. The populations of the endangered bivalves Unio crassus and Pseudanodonta complanata were recorded. An extensive population of another endangered gastropod Anisus vorticulus was found at one site. Physa acuta is the only non-native species confirmed in the Mrežnica River. Theodoxus fluviatilis is a widely distributed species, ranging from the Ireland (Lucey et al . 1992) to Iran (Glöer & Peši ć 2012). The records from Africa were considered as doubtful (Brown 2002), but recently the senior author found this species in Algeria (Glöer unpublished record). The species prefers the lowlands (in Switzerland up to 275 m a.s.l., Turner et al . 1998), and calcium-rich waters, living on hard benthic substrates, typically rocks. On the territory of the Central and Eastern Balkans three species are present (Markovi ć et al . 2014): Theodoxus fluviatilis (Linnaeus, 1758), T. danubialis (C. Pfeiffer, 1828) and T. transversalis (C.Pfeiffer, 1828). For Montenegro, Wohlberedt (1909), Karaman & Karaman (2007), Glöer & Peši ć (2008), and Peši ć & Glöer (2013) listed only Theodoxus fluviatilis . Figures 1-4. The shell of adults of Theodoxus fluviatilis is 4.5–6.5 mm high and 6–9 mm broad, exceptionally up to 13 mm, and consists of 3–3.5 whorls, including protoconch, with a usually low spire. -

Abstract In the present study, conducted between 2001 and 2003, four taxa of aquatic gastropoda were identified from the Balıkdamı Wetland. All the species determined are new records for the study area, while one species Theodoxus gloeri sp. nov. is new to science. Neritidae is a representative family of an ancient group Archaeogastropoda, among Gastropoda. Theodoxus is a freshwater genus in the Neritidae, known for a dextral, rapidly grown shell ended with a large last whorl and a lunate calcareous operculum. Distribution of this genus includes Europe, also extending from North Africa to South Iran. In Turkey, 14 modern and fossil species and subspecies were mentioned so far. In this study, we aimed to uncover the gastropoda fauna of an important Wetland and describe a subterranean Theodoxus species, new to science. E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: The evolution of the molluscan biota in Sabaudia Lake (Italy, central Tyrrhenian Sea) in the last century is hereby traced on the basis of bibliography, museum type materials, and field samplings carried out from April 2009 to Sep- tember 2011. Biological assessments revealed clearly distinct phases, elucidating the definitive shift of this human-induced coastal lake from a freshwater to a marine-influenced lagoon ecosystem. Records of marine subfossil taxa suggest that previous accommodations to these environmental features have already occurred in the past, in agreement with historical evidence. Faunal and ecological insights are offered for its current malacofauna, and special emphasis is given to alien spe- cies. A total of 74 macroinvertebrate taxa were observed during a 2001 survey. Oligochaeta and Mollusca were the principal components of the community with regard to species richness and abundance. Based on data on the qualitative composition of the macroinvertebrate fauna, a correspondence analysis divided the investigated stretch in three sectors – upper (Pannonian), Iron Gate sector and entrance sector to the Iron Gate stretch. The distribution patterns of certain species supported the division of sectors defined by correspondence analysis. The hitherto known distribution includes the Ponto-Caspian area and Bul- garian part of the Danube River (Gerlach, 1978; Russev and Marinov, 1964; Russev et al., 1998; Uzunov et al., 1998). Manayunkia caspica originates from the Ponto-Cas- pian basin (Caspian Environment Programme, 2001), and it has not been previously found in most European areas. This new record of M.caspica moves the limit of distribution of the giv- en species 122 km upstream along the Danube watercourse. Manayunkia caspica (Annenkova, 1929) Four undamaged specimens of M. caspica (Annenkova, 1929) from the Serbian part of the Danube were examined. All individuals were collected in September of 2005 near the town- let Tekija (44º 41´ 2” N, 22º 24´53” E; altitude of 477 m; km 956 of the watercourse;depth of 9 m). The observed specimens are stored in the collection of biological material of the Bentho- logical Section of the Siniša Stanković Institute for Biological Research in Belgrade (ref. number 935/2005). All morphologi- cal and morphometric characters of the examined individuals correspond to the guides of Annenkova (1930), Russev andMarinov (1964), and Timm (1999). -

The study comprises literature data and field surveys carried out at 84 watercourses and 5 reservoirs during 2010-2013. The oc- currence of three species is confirmed:Theodoxus fluviatilis, T. danubialis and T. transversalis. The most widespread species is T. fluviatilis (river nerite). The previously dominant nerite T. danubialis (Danube nerite) currently persists mainly in hilly and mountain parts of central Serbia and remains in few localities only in large rivers such as the Danube and the Sava. The endangered species T. transversalis (striped ner- ite) shows patchy distribution; the Drina River – Lim River and the Velika Morava River – Južna Morava River – Nišava River systems are revealed as important refugia for this species. Moreover, at some locali- ties at the Nišava River and the Velika Morava River, the striped nerite is found to be the dominant in the present gastropod communities. Regular studies are crucial for the timely prediction of population health and for conservation of freshwater nerite species in Europe.
