Veteran musician Newell "Spiegle"Willcox will receive a State University of New York honorary degree as Doctor of Music at today's Cortland College Commencement. A Cortland County resident and native, "Spiegle" Willcox has acquired international fame as a jazz trombonist during a career that has spanned seven decades. He played in the company of such immortals as Bix Biederbecke, and the Dorsey Brothers, and today continues to be active in jazz circles. '"

"Spiegle" Willcox's reputation as a Dixieland musician began to grow in the 1920s when he joined the famous Orchestra as the lead trom- bonist. He never completely disappeared from the- big-time jazz scene, even during the years he spent in Cortland managing the family fuel -.business. In April 1975, he joined 20 jazz musicians at New York's Carnegie Hall to recreate "The Music of ." The memorable performance, which included many of the numbers Willcox and his colleagues had recorded in the 1920s, was described by a New York Times reviewer as "A glimpse of living his- tory and crisp recreations of some classic jazz...(that) created a warm, sentimental glow."

During the summer of 1986, "Spiegle" Willcox played at the North Sea Jazz Festival at the Hague and in London, and that fall he appeared on Johnnie Carson's "Tonight Show" along with cornetist Wild Bill Davidson and Doc Severinsen. In November of 1986, he delighted a Cortland audience when he teamed with Doc Severinsen in an impromptu and unrehearsed performance during Severinsen's appearance at Cortland College with his band Xebron, and last summer he drew the largest audience ever to attend an event at the College's Dowd Fine Arts Theatre when he and his All Star Band presented an evening of mainstream jazz, Dixieland, blues and oldtime ballads.

The citation accompanying "Spiegle" Willcox's honorary degree reads:

In your hands the trombone has become a horn of plenty; an instrument of joy; a sparkling river of sweet notes in the springtime of Dixieland; and a symbol of that uniquely American contribution to world culture, the music of jazz.

From YOllr solo debut with the Cortland Normal School Orchestra at age 10, to Carnegie Hall and the concert stages of Europe, yOIl have enraptured yOllng and old alike while promoting jazz as a complex art [orm. YOIl have collaborated with the great luminaries of the Jazz Age--Bix Beiderbecke, Jean Goldkette, Paul Whiteman, and Joe Venllti--as well as contemporary stars like Doc Severinsen on the "Tonight Show."

Now yOIl return to the Cortland College campus where, seventy-jive years after YOllr debut; the State University of New York takes great pride in conferring on yOIl the degree of Doctor of Music. Candidates for Graduate Degrees in 1988

Academic Heraldry As an occasion meant to be both joyful and solemn, Commencement lends it- self to the pageantry of an academic procession which has its roots in medieval times. The gowns and hoods worn by the faculty members, candidates for gradua- tion and platform dignitaries distingnish the institution from which the wearer was or will be graduated, the level of the degree earned and the field of learning. In 1895American colleges established a standard code of academic dress, specifting three types of gowns. The gown for the bachelor's de~ee has pointed sleeves; the gown"for the master's degree has an oblong sleeve WIththe front part cut in an arc, and the gown for the doctor's degree has bell-shaped sleeves. The doctor's gown also is trimmed in velvet. The hood's inner lining, which folds out at the back and center, indicates the colors of the institution granting the degree, while-the border, which comes around to the front of the neck, represents the field of learning, The black mortar board cap is quite standard. Its only distinguishing feature is a gold tassel worn by the holder of the doctor's dell"ee. At today's ceremony, those who will be graduating with honors will be noticeable by the color of the tassels on their caps--red for summa cum laude, white and red for magna cum laude and cum laude.

The Mace The mace is a ceremonial staff used as a symbol of authority. The mace bearer precedes the platform party and places the mace on a special stand where it remains while the official rroceedings of Commencement are under way. Cortland's mace is a "Torch 0 Learning" of silver and rosewood created by sil- versmith John Marshall.

The Gonfalons The three bright banners carried in the academic procession are called gon- falons. The !I0nfalon in red, white, black and grey represents the College, while the gonfalon ill shades of peach and green represents the Division of Professional Studies and the gonfalon in shades of blue, grey and burgnndy represents the Division of Arts and Sciences. The gonfalons were designed by Libby Kowalski, assistant professor of art, and Kathy Maher, a 1984Cortland graduate, while the standards were made by Bard Prentiss, chairman of the Art Department, and J. Eric Kroot, a student. Materials were provided by the Gilbert and Mary Cahill Foundation and Distinguished Teaching Professor Rozanne M. Brooks.

The Medallion and Chain The silver medallion of office worn by President James M. Clark was created by Gerald N. DiGiusto, professor of art, and was presented to the College in 1983 by DiGiusto, Dr. Rozanne M. Brooks, and the late Dr. Gilbert Cahill. The neck chain was made by Linda Steward of DeRuyter and the burnished walnut case in which the medallion and chain are kept when not being worn for ceremonial oc- casions was designed and finished by Bard Prentiss.
