Thomas' Laboratories of the Spirit, printed by the University's Printing Fellow. It included representatives of the Press Board and of the Gregynog Committee. The Press is one of the leading publishers of traditionally made fine books in the UK providing design, typesetting, printing and binding services for individuals and national institutions. The private press produced forty-five titles between 1923 and 1941. Many were in Welsh, or had Welsh connections, including The life of Saint David, Selected poems of Edward Thomas and Gweledigaetheu y Bardd Cwsc. The Press also produced other material, including Christmas cards, programmes and prospectuses. Dr Thomas Jones was the first editor for the Press. Horace Bray was employed as resident artist, and Robert Maynard was the original controller of the Press until 1930; between 1936-1940, James Wardrop was the controller. During the Second World War, the Gregynog Press ceased production, and although the house was still used for conferences and festivals, it did not resume printing. It ceased as a business in 1963. In 1960 Gregynog Hall was sold to the University of Wales. Disgrifiadau deunydd | Related material The NLW holds other archives relating to the history of the Gregynog Press, most notably twelve volumes of correspondence in the papers of Dr Thomas Jones CH (Class L, vols. 1-12: see the typescript Guide and Index to the papers, pp. 390-426); and the Gregynog Press Visitors' Book, 1923-1944 (now NLW MS 18465E). Four letters, 1959-c. 1975, relating to the press may be found in NLW MS 21818. Correspondence relating to the publication of specific books may be found in Papurau T. Gwynn Jones (G1600, G2906, G2697-703, G3935-50, G6560), and Papurau W. J. Gruffydd, file 132. Copies of all books published by the Gregynog Press between 1923 and 1940 are held in the Department of Printed Books, together with a collection of the printed ephemera: annotated lists of both are available in that Department. I have an interest in books. You have an interest in books. Actually, I find everybody has an interest in books of some sort. I have an interest in food too—and I have also found that everybody has an interest in food. I think chefs and book designers have a lot in common. We are designing, creating, direct- ing—orchestrating—a wide range of different elements, and overseeing their production, often as multiples. Aren’t we both obsessed with detail, with the quality of the materials or ingredients, the production, the presentation? Aren’t we looking for that perfect balance? As Julian started to collect prints, mainly engravings in wood and copper, and lithographs, he became aware that many of these prints had been made for the specific purpose of illustrating books. This led him to research the artists and the publishers who used the services of artists to enhance the visual appeal of their publications. From the late 19th century wood engraved illustration had been set with cold type and printed on small presses to produce lavishly illustrated books in limited editions. With the development of printing techniques, and in particular the commercialisation of lithography, books could be printed in larger quantities with fine illustrations to reach a mass market. At our suggestion and with the full and enthusiastic co-operation of Julian Francis, we have selected 50 books and 50 prints that show the symbiotic relationship between ILLUSTRATIONS the artist printmaker and the publisher. As a consequence of these high standards, print runs — i.e. the number of copies of a book that are printed — tend to be very low. There is often, in addition, an emphasis on traditional printing technologies and techniques. The modern fine press movement is usually considered to have begun with the Kelmscott Press, established by William Morris in 1890-1891 as part of the broader Arts and Crafts movement. Morris founded his press in opposition to the ever-increasing mechanization of printing over the course of the 19th century, which Morris believed was accompanied by a decline in printing standards. The spirit of the fine press movement continues in the ongoing revival of the techniques of letterpress printing, but the movement itself is usually dated to the years 1891-1939. This finding aid concentrates on presses associated with the fine press movement itself, but also covers precursors to the movement. Presses founded after 1939 are excluded, with the exception of presses founded as continuations of earlier presses (for example, the Arion Press), presses founded by printers whose careers were well established by 1939 (for example, John Fass’s Hammer Creek Press and Will Carter’s Rampant Lions Press), and prominent Midwestern Presses (for example, the Stone Wall Press and the Perishable Press).
