Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way. -

[email protected] Resumen La presencia de Alejandro Magno en el cómic ha sido prácticamente ignorada por los estudios sobre la recepción centrados tanto en la Antigüedad clásica en general como en la figura de este personaje en particular, y muy escasamente examinada por los que abordan el tratamiento de la Antigüedad en dicho género. Sin embargo, la existencia de más de doscientos títulos publicados a lo largo de casi un siglo que incorporan representaciones gráficas de Alejandro constituye un corpus con entidad más que suficiente como para ser reconocido en tanto que objeto de estudio por la investigación académica a la vista tanto de sus posibilidades educativas en el ámbito de la didáctica de la Historia como de la importancia del personaje como icono de referencia en el marco de la cultura popular contemporánea. Abstract The presence of Alexander the Great in comics has been virtually ignored by the reception studies both about Classical Antiquity and about the Macedonian conqueror, and very sparsely analysed by the research about the treatment of Antiquity in comic books. However, the existence of more than two hundred works published over almost a century with graphic representations of Alexander shapes a corpus with more than enough value to be recognized as object of study by academic research because of the educational possibilities of the most recent historical-biographical approaches from History teaching, and the importance of Alexander the Great as a reference icon in the contemporary popular culture. -

Benoît Berthou Université Paris 13, LABSIC L’idée même d’une « fantasy à la française » pose un problème intéressant la bande dessinée en son entier : comment appréhender la spécificité nationale d’un genre présent dans la quasi-totalité du monde ? Semblable étude ne fut en effet à notre connaissance jamais réalisée et est à peine évoquée dans la récente édition du Dictionnaire mondial de la bande dessinée signé Patrick Gaumer, et ce alors qu’elle soulève pourtant des questions essentielles quant au neuvième art européen. En effet, nous ne saurions situer cette spécificité du côté d’une antériorité : même si la scène française présente des séries de fantasy figurant parmi les plus anciennes du genre (comme par exemple Thorgal qui apparaît en 1977), celles-ci furent précédées par des œuvres américaines tel le Prince Vaillant d’Hal Foster qui date de 1937. -

Avec Reiser, Moebius et Georges Bess, cette ex- position propose trois dépassements de la case et de sa narration pour confronter le spectateur à la création personnelle de ces dessinateurs, qui chacun à leur manière, sont hors norme. Ils ont en commun de faire sauter les codes de la bande dessinée, d’ouvrir le dessin à une inspiration intuitive et une liberté sans limite.
