1 YSGOL CEFN MAWR NEWS A great evening was had at our Monster Bash Disco before the half term break with brilliant costumes. We had a dozen pumpkins donated by Tesco, carved by School Council and used to decorate the hall. Thank you to Mrs Prile for doing a great job as DJ. We raised £290 which has helped to fund the Wrexham Music Service Orchestra concert and Christmas activities. We would like to thank our parents for your support for this event.

Our Year 6 pupils visited Techniquest Glyndwr Science Discovery Centre recently. Techniquest supports science, technology, engineering and maths and the pupils had a great time exploring some of the zones. They enjoyed a show and experiments involving measuring and test tubes. The pupils had time to spend in more of the zones ending the day with a talk in personal protective equipment, wearing lab coats and completing experiments using fire. This autumn the Reception class have been busy making nests and pictures with natural materials, made fantastic scarecrows for homework and made loaves as gifts to the other classes in the school. They used harvest fruits to make healthy fruit kebabs and also made pumpkin soup with pumpkins kindly donated by Tesco. The School Council organised a Children in Need fundraising event with children and staff paying £1.00 to attend school in their pyjamas, and our school cook, Mrs Sue Price, kindly made 200 Pudsey Bear biscuits which we sold on the day raising £328.50 for Children in Need. Well done all.

We were extremely grateful for all the donations of food which we received and were able to give to the Wrexham Food Bank. We were also very proud and pleased to be invited to Cefn Cenotaph where we joined our local community to remember those who lost their lives in wars since the First World War. Our Year 6 pupils, joined by pupils from the other local schools, read out the names of the people who are named upon the Cenotaph. Our younger pupils painted poppies and learned about the importance of remembrance.

More recently Year 6 pupils visited the Imperial War Museum in Manchester to learn more about the wars and the ways in which the affected people's lives. All the children are now very keen to embark on the community centenary project. 23 PKC GROUP UPDATE

The PKC Group believe that if the Cefn & Cefn Mawr is ever going to get on the tourist map then Windborne Gate Parking is an essential first step. This can provide large capacity parking at an equal distance from the Aqueduct as it is to the centre of Cefn Mawr, 500mts in either direction. This would mean that with the right signage leading to it we could expect to see at least 10% of the people visiting the aqueduct also visiting the village centre and other parts of the Cefn. This would encourage people to stay longer in our area and would start our community on the road to Sustainable Tourism Development. In time this would turn our community around from Post Industrial Depression to a vibrant and viable community once again as it used to be. Cefn Mawr was once an important centre of commerce for south Wrexham and with the correct overall planning could become a Tourist Destination and Hub for the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site, Dee Valley and South Wrexham. This would be a big boost for our retail economy and in the due course of time provide more job opportunities for our local people. Our area has a lot to offer as the above map shows. However, if this step is not made, or alternatives that only work for the aqueduct and exclude our community are taken, there is not much hope for us or the future of our economy. Commercial Rates will be reintroduced in the coming years and with the present low foot fall in the village centre of Cefn Mawr this will have serious implications for our retail sector. The PKC Group have put together a proposal for central parking at Windborne Gate which can be down loaded from our website from our LDP2 page, and originally applied for planning permission in 2012. We hope WCBC, CRT and Eastman’s are listening to this and do not consign our community to further unnecessary economic hardship when there is such good opportunity for us all if they will only work with us. www.pkcgroup.wales
