We had a dozen pumpkins donated by Tesco, carved by School Council and used to decorate the hall. Thank you to Mrs Prile for doing a great job as DJ. We raised £290 which has helped to fund the Wrexham Music Service Orchestra concert and Christmas activities. We would like to thank our parents for your support for this event. Our Year 6 pupils visited Techniquest Glyndwr Science Discovery Centre recently. Techniquest supports science, technology, engineering and maths and the pupils had a great time exploring some of the zones. They enjoyed a show and experiments involving measuring and test tubes. The pupils had time to spend in more of the zones ending the day with a talk in personal protective equipment, wearing lab coats and completing experiments using fire. This autumn the Reception class have been busy making nests and pictures with natural materials, made fantastic scarecrows for homework and made loaves as gifts to the other classes in the school. They used harvest fruits to make healthy fruit kebabs and also made pumpkin soup with pumpkins kindly donated by Tesco. The School Council organised a Children in Need fundraising event with children and staff paying £1.00 to attend school in their pyjamas, and our school cook, Mrs Sue Price, kindly made 200 Pudsey Bear biscuits which we sold on the day raising £328.50 for Children in Need. We were extremely grateful for all the donations of food which we received and were able to give to the Wrexham Food Bank. We were also very proud and pleased to be invited to Cefn Cenotaph where we joined our local community to remember those who lost their lives in wars since the First World War. Our Year 6 pupils, joined by pupils from the other local schools, read out the names of the people who are named upon the Cenotaph. Our younger pupils painted poppies and learned about the importance of remembrance. More recently Year 6 pupils visited the Imperial War Museum in Manchester to learn more about the wars and the ways in which the affected people's lives. All the children are now very keen to embark on the community centenary project. The Transition Team is supporting the process of Year 1 pupils have now begun their Lead Creative closing the programme whilst continuing to deliver School project.     The Cefn Viaduct Cefn Mawr Viaduct The Chester and Shrewsbury railway runs at the eastern end of the Vale of Llangollen, beyond the parish boundary, passing through Cefn Mawr on route from Chester to Shrewsbury. It is carried over the River Dee by a stupendous viaduct, half a mile down stream from the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. It measures one thousand five hundred and eight feet in length, and stands one hundred and forty-seven feet above the level of the river. The structure is supported by nineteen arches with sixty foot spans. In 1845 rival schemes were put forward for railway lines to join Chester with Shrewsbury. Promoters of the plan to link Shrewsbury to Chester via Ruabon had to work quickly to get their scheme moving. Instructions for the notices and plans were only given on the 7th November and they had to be deposited with the clerk of Peace by the 30th November 1845. Hostility from objecting landowners meant that Robertson had to survey the land by night. One irate squire expressed a wish that someone would 'throw Robertson and his theodolite into the canal'. Henry Robertson told a Parliamentary Committee of the advantage of providing a railway line that would open up coalfields of Ruabon and Wrexham to markets at Chester, Birkenhead and Liverpool in the north and to Shrewsbury and other Shropshire towns on the south side. The Parliamentary Committee agreed with him and the bill received Royal Assent on 30th June 1845. The Shrewsbury and Chester Railway Company made good progress with construction work and the line to Ruabon from the north was opened in November 1846.

H Hunts (capacitors) / Filmcap / Unilator Technical Ceramics (1970-78) Interviewee: VN025 Nesta Davies Date: 12: 06: 2014 Interviewer: Kate Sullivan on behalf of Women’s Archive Wales Nesta confirmed her name, address and date of birth, namely 13/06/1932 Her daughter Julie was also present during the interview. She was one of seven children and remembers the war starting when she was eight. When the sirens went off, their mother used to take them to the cellars of the old school. Her father was in both world wars and her eldest brother was in the army too and a sister in the ATS. Her mother worked in service, and because she had seven children she used to take washing in. Nesta went to Ruabon council school and then to Acrefair secondary school, leaving at fourteen. She didn't care much for school but says she wasn't a bad scholar and was good at arithmetic and English. The family didn't speak Welsh in the village unlike the village of Rhosllanerchrugog nearby which was very Welsh. After leaving school she worked in a bakery, icing cakes and cleaning tables but she says the money wasn't very good, and she had to catch the bus into Wrexham. After that, she worked in a launderette in Llangollen, washing sheets for hotels, and they had to carry heavy sheets and put them in the rollers. She found it very hard work and couldn't cope and after about six weeks she heard about a job in a factory at Llangollen, which wove wool blankets.
