She signed a seven-year contract with Howard Hughes who immediately wanted to show off his newest gem. He did so in a way that would go down in cinematic history. By showcasing the buxom figure of this 5-foot 7-inch woman, he lit a fire under Hollywood censorship. His first film starring Jane Russell, The Outlaw, was completed in 1941 but did not show to the public until 1943. Howard Hughes had Jane in revealing outfits throughout the film and the Hollywood censors would only okay a limited release in 1943. The film finally had a general release in 1946. Between making The Outlaw and its general release, Russell made a name for herself in Hollywood. Born Ernestine Jane Geraldine Russell in Bemidji, Minnesota, Russell died in Santa Maria, California due to respiratory failure. Russell married three times. Her first husband was Bob Waterfield. The two adopted three children together, but divorced in 1968. Her second husband was Roger Barrett. They met in Chicago, Illinois when they worked together in a stage show called Here Today. They married shortly after meeting in 1968. Barrett died of a heart attack later that year. Russell was quoted as saying “Everybody tells me to 'stay busy.' He was only 47 and strong as an ox. -

The Virginia-born director, who has specialized, like D.W. Griffith and John Ford, in Americana themes since his first classic, "Tol'able David," and later with "State Fair", "In Old Chicago," "Jesse James" and "Alexander's Ragtime Band," will make a trip from the West Coast to New York to participate in the opening of this program. On June 29 and 30, he will address the Museum audiences, although he seldom makes public appearances. While he contributed to Hollywood's worldwide reputation, King, who recognized such early superstars as Richard Barthelmess, Ronald Colman and Gary Cooper and gave them their first leading roles on the screen, has managed to retain his relative anonymity in an ostentatious environment. -

Special Ferdinando Baldi Memorial Issue (1927-2007) WAI! Ferdinando Baldi Memorial Issue The Swingin’ Doors Ferdinando Baldi was born on May 9, 1927 in Cava dei Tirreni, Salerno, Italy. He started his film career in the early 1950s with a number of forgotten low budget films and musical comedies. His break came in 1960 as the co-director of "David and Goliath" which was part biblical epic and part sword and sandal, and starred Orson Welles. The success of this film saw Baldi become strongly associated with the sword and sandal film genre for the next few years, and he would go on to direct a variety of genre films such as "I, Tartari" in 1961, again with Welles as the star. He also directed "Son of Cleopatra" (1964) with another American actor Mark Damon. 1966 found him busy filming "Massacre in the Black Forest" and "The Shadow of Eagles" both with Cameron Mitchell and the low budget spy film "Suicide Mission to Singapore". He also directed young Franco Nero in "Texas, Addio". With the explosion of the Spaghetti western films Baldi became known as one of the leading directors in the genre. "Little Rita of the West" (1967) was one of his most unique projects which was a western musical starring Rita Pavone and one of the early films of actor Terence Hill. In 1968 he filmed "Preparati la bara!" (Viva Django) which was a follow up to Sergio Corbucci’s "Django". It starred Terence Hill, who dramatically resembled Nero, in a straight forward role. 1969 saw "Gunman of the Ave Maria" ("The Forgotten Pistolero") with a plot taken from a Greek tragedy. -

22 “Te sound, it looks wonderful.” — Dario Argento If the colour yellow once evoked the pleasant imagery of bright summer days and blooming bush daisies, it certainly took a dark turn in the cinematic world of twentieth century Italy. Murder mysteries shot in saturated colours depicting grim, twisted nightmares of brutal killings became the new yellow—the giallo flm. But before referring to a genre of graphic Italian horror flms, giallo, the Italian word for yellow, was used to describe a genre of paperback mystery novels with bright yellow spines and covers introduced by the Milanese publishing house Mondadori in 1929.1 Most of the stories were translations of English whodunits and hard- boiled detective novels, including work by Edgar Allan Poe, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Agatha Christie 2, with translations of Edgar Wallace novels appearing to be some of the most popular during the 1930s and 1940s.3 Despite the fact some critics, such as Alberto Savino, believed that mysteries were “unnatural” and “foreign” to Italian culture, these novels managed to inspire not only an Italian literary tradition with authors such as Giorgio Scerbanenco, Andrea Camilleri, and Carlo Lucarelli 4, but also some of the most terrifying and visually striking flms to come out of Italy during the 1960s and 1970s. Gialli frequently cross generic boundaries of crime flms, horror movies, and thrillers, and therefore may be more appropriately considered flone, as they are by many Italian critics, rather than part of a genre.5 Meaning large thread, the term flone is used to indicate a looser collection of similar themes and styles.6 Gialli can be more generally related to each other in this way, and thus a flm like Dario Argento’s Suspiria (1977) can be called giallo despite its greater resemblance to the supernatural horror thriller. -

Kolb (National Endowment for the Humanities) Published on H-PCAACA (November, 2000) Hollywood Stars and their Army Service from the Spanish American War to Vietnam Hollywood Stars and their Army Service from the Spanish American War to Vietnam This splendid book is the third and final volume in historian-biographer Wise's trilogy and it makes a fitting companion to its two illustrious predecessors. In 1997 Wise and his co-author Ann Rehill wrote Stars in Blue: Movie Actors in America's Sea Services in which film actors who served in the U.S. Navy, Naval Reserve, Coast Guard, or Coast Guard Reserve from 1920 through the Korean War are profiled. Wise and Rehill also authored Stars in the Corps: Movie Actors in the United States Marines (1999) which covers the same period but emphasizes Marines in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. Your reviewer had the privilege of reviewing these two prior volumes [1], and is pleased to report that this third volume joins its antecedents by providing the reader with clear, concise, and informative profiles of celebrities who, in this volume, served in the U.S. Army and air services from as early as the Spanish-American War into the Vietnam era.
