    Der Titel des Programms der "German Jazz Masters" ist absolut eindeutig; der Name ist sozusagen Programm. Es handelt sich in der Tat um ein Treffen von alten Freunden. Von Gleichgesinnten und dennoch konträren Charakteren. Von Brüder im Geiste mit völlig unterschiedlichen Zielen. Von Idealisten, die stets für ihre ureigene Sache kämpfen. Von Überlebenskünstlern und mutigen Visionären, von Konkurrenten und Partnern, Einzelgängern und Teamplayern, von Leidensgenossen und Triumphatoren. Ein Treffen von fünf deutschen Jazzmusikern. Vielleicht den besten, die Deutschland je hervorgebracht hat. Wenn ein Bandprojekt den Namen "German Jazz Masters" verdient, dann dieses Gipfeltreffen von Klaus Doldinger, Manfred Schoof, Wolfgang Dauner, Eberhard Weber und neuerdings Deutschlands international wohl renommiertester Schlagzeuger Curt Cress. Jeder von ihnen hat Geschichte geschrieben, jeder war in seinem Genre eine stilbildende Größe, hat als Bandleader mit eigenen Gruppen unzählige brillante Alben produziert oder als Botschafter des deutschen Jazz tausende von Konzerten im In- und Ausland gegeben. Mitnichten ein übliches Allstar-Projekt. Hier handelt es sich vielmehr um ein ebenso bereites wie inspiriertes Musizieren auf der Basis wechselseitiger, fluktuierender Impulse, völlig ohne Platzgerangel. Jedermann weiß aber auch, dass die Jazz Masters und mit ihnen die internationale Jazz- Szene einen nicht zu überwindenden Verlust hinnehmen mussten. Mit-Initiator des Projektes und Gründungsmitglied der Band Albert Mangelsdorff starb kürzlich nach langer, schwerer Krankheit. Mit ihm gingen sein unnachahmlicher Stil, seine Begeisterung und Inspiration für das gemeinsame Projekt der "alten Freunde", ein essentieller Bestandteil des musikalischen und menschlichen Gesamtbildes der Band, schlichtweg unersetzlich eben. Seine Energie und Kraft jedoch sind bleibend und finden Ausdruck in seinen Werken, leben weiter in diesen und auch in der Erinnerung der Jazz Masters.

    GRAHAM COLLIER / CUNEIFORM RECORDS 01/18/2007 11:09 AM Graham Collier's site GRAHAM COLLIER Graham Collier is one of the best known and most important British jazz composers and over a 40 year career, his list of compositions and commissions has grown to encompass ensembles around the world. He is well-known as an author and educator, having written seven books on jazz. Hoarded Dreams is a previously unreleased long-form composition heard here in a powerful live performance from 1983 by an international all-star band that includes Tomasz Stanko, Conny Bauer, Malcolm Griffiths, Eje Thelin, Ed Speight, Roger Dean, Ted Curson, John Surman, Manfred Schoof, Kenny Wheeler, Art Themen and many others. " I came across the phrase “Hoarded Dreams” in a book...it seemed an ideal title for this commission, [which] is the realisation of the jazz composer’s constant dream: to be able to hand-pick a group of star musicians to perform a long composition written with absolutely no outside restrictions… . HOARDED Overall the piece inhabits (as indeed does most of my writing) that area DREAMS between the purely written and the purely improvised."-Graham Collier. The energy of the ensemble performing the piece in front of a large and enthusiastic RUNE 252 audience is very obvious on the recording and there's some great soloing as well as ensemble passages. "The instrumentation is that of the classic big jazz band, yet it is deployed in a highly untraditional way.… 70 minutes of dazzling solos and exchanges, what really could be described as musical fireworks." - The New Statesman "You couldn’t tell where improvisation ended and writing took over….

    European Echoes: Jazz Experimentalism in Germany, 1950-1975 Harald Kisiedu Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Harald Kisiedu All rights reserved ABSTRACT “European Echoes: Jazz Experimentalism in Germany, 1950-1975” Harald Kisiedu “European Echoes: Jazz Experimentalism in Germany, 1950-1975” is a historical and interpretive study of jazz and improvised music in West and East Germany. “European Echoes” illuminates an important period in German jazz whose beginnings are commonly associated with the notion of Die Emanzipation (“The Emancipation”). Standard narratives of this period have portrayed Die Emanzipation as a process in which mid-1960s European jazz musicians came into their own by severing ties of influence to their African American musical forebears. I complicate this framing by arguing that engagement with black musical methods, concepts, and practices remained significant to the early years of German jazz experimentalism. Through a combination of oral histories, press reception, sound recordings, and archival research, I elucidate how local transpositions and adaptations of black musical methods, concepts, and practices in post-war Germany helped to create a prime site for contesting definitions of cultural, national, and ethnic identities across Europe. Using a case study approach, I focus on the lives and works of five of the foremost German jazz experimentalists: multi-reedist Peter Brötzmann, trumpeter and composer Manfred Schoof, pianist and composer Alexander von Schlippenbach, multi-reedist Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, and pianist Ulrich Gumpert. Furthermore, I discuss new music composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s sustained engagement with African American musical forms in addition to the significance of both Schoof’s and Schlippenbach’s studies and various collaborations with him.

Die Resultate jener Auseinandersetzungen legen einen me- thodenpluralistischen Ansatz musikalischer Analyse nahe. Eine kritische Diskussion ausgewählter Analyseansätze erschließt ein methodisches Re- pertoire zur Anwendung in den porträthaften Einzelstudien.58 Ansätze musikalischer Analyse Roger T. Dean (1992) gliedert die musikanalytischen Ansätze der Jazzfor- schung in zwei Bereiche und benennt das ihnen zugrunde liegende Ver- ständnis der Musik als „music as object“ und „music as process“ (Dean 1992, vii). Die Kategorie „music as object“ bezeichnet dabei „the final sound heard by someone listening to a recording“. Demgegenüber zeichnet sich die Auffassung von „music as process“ aus durch „the means and ap- proaches adopted by the improviser in producing that sound, and the rela- tionship with the audience present at the time of performance“ (Dean 1992, vii).
