Lisa Fredman Dr. Lisa Fredman recently published A Critical Edition of Rashi’s Commentary to Proverbs. She was the founding Principal of the YTA Girls’ High School in Jerusalem and is currently a lecturer of Bible at Efrata College. RASHI’S WOMEN: PROTOTYPES IN PROVERBS he book of Proverbs is replete with text on the theme of women. It mentions many different types of women, and even abstract T concepts such as Madame Wisdom and Madame Folly (chap. 8). If we attempt to group these women, we can discern two general catego- ries: evil women and virtuous women.1 How are these two prototypical women, the evil and the virtuous, treated by Rashi in his commentary to Proverbs? Is each one considered individually, or can an overall order or pattern be detected regarding their treatment? Rashi’s commentary to Proverbs is a two-tiered one, similar to his commentary on the other biblical books. In his other scriptural commen- taries, however, Rashi generally uses the term midrasho to put forth the non-literal meaning and the word peshuto to introduce the literal explana- tion; here he presents new exegetical terms to explain the two levels of understanding.2 The word mashal denotes the allegorical meaning, and This article is an expansion of a lecture delivered at the Association for Jewish Studies Conference in San Diego, December 2019. How to repair the world Electronic copy available at: http://ssrn.com/abstract=2385947 The Assimilation of Tikkun Olam Levi Cooper1 “Tikkun olam” is most commonly heard as a slogan for activism, political involvement, and social justice. The term has had numerous lives, such that its endurance and malleability over time are truly impressive. It has been used as a pliable legislative justification for changing specific laws and as an eschatological ideal that may describe a human process or the divine end. It has had practical implications for some, and mystical connotations for others. In the twentieth century the term tikkun olam has been used in reference to Jewish political involvement, or to argue for abstinence from any political participation whatsoever. More recently it has become a banner, bandied around for almost any value, including energy conservation, recycling, government health care packages, the fight against terrorism, better nutrition, looking after stray animals, and the list goes on. This paper will touch on the main waystations of the term, starting with a brief look at the term’s etymology, and journeying from rabbinic literature to modern times. This whistle stop tour will provide an overview of the vicissitudes of the term tikkun olam, and will demonstrate how it has come to connote a disparate array of values. -

The Torah scholar committed to synthesis seeks to employ historical knowledge and methodological tools in the decoding of halakhic texts as a means of contributing to the halakhic discourse. Traditional "Talmud Torah" does not address the realm of pesak halakhah, but it is nonetheless considered the highest form of religious expression. -

Shabbat-B'Shabbato – Parshat Metzora (Hagadol) No 1620: 8 Nissan 5776 (16 April 2016) AS SHABBAT APPROACHES Redemption, Prayer, and Torah Study - by Esti Rosenberg, Head of the Midrasha for Women, Migdal Oz In the introduction to his book "The Time of our Freedom" Rabbi Soloveitchik describes the mystic charm of the Seder night: "As a child I would stand and I was enthralled... I was hypnotized by this night... bright with the light of the moon, enveloped in beauty and glory... I was excited and filled with inspiration... Silence, quiet, peace, and a feeling of calm surrounded me. I became used to surrender to a flow of abundant joy and excitement." The Seder night incorporates within it an abstract of our entire religious world, and every Jewish family has the privilege of passing on the tradition of the generations from father to son and from mother to daughter. There are three main elements in the Seder night: The first element is the "story of the Exodus." The historical record is passed down from one generation to the next. Every generation tells the next one in line about the experience of redemption, about the matzot and the packages on the backs of the people, about leaving in the middle of the night, and about the emotional experience of moving from slavery to freedom. It is a first-person account, a true record of what happened to my own ancestors. The emphasis in the story is on personal experience, on faith, and on how the Holy One, Blessed be He, chose us as His nation. -

Gevaryahu Printed in Jerusalem Alon Printing 02-5388938 Editor’s Introduction Every Shabbat morning, upon entering Lower Merion Synagogue, an Orthodox congregation on the outskirts of the city of Philadelphia, I began by exchanging greetings with the late Lt. Colonel Eliyahu Yekutiel Shwartz. He used to give me news clippings and booklets which, in his opinion, would enhance my knowledge. I, in turn, would express my personal views on current events, especially related to our shared birthplace, Jerusalem. Throughout the years we had an unwritten agreement; Eliyahu would have someone at the Israeli Consulate of Philadelphia fax the latest news in Hebrew to my office (Eliyahu had no fax machine at the time), and I would deliver the weekly accumulation of faxes to his house on Friday afternoons before Shabbat. This arrangement lasted for years. Eliyahu read the news, and distributed the material he thought was important to other Israelis and especially to our mutual friend Dr. Michael Toaff. We all had an inherent need to know exactly what was happening in Israel. Often, during my frequent visits to Israel, I found that I was more current on happenings in Israel than the local Israelis. -

The approach highlights especially the meaning of socio•historical and religious factors in the emergence of the Mission view of Messianic Jewish women. Ukraine, the location of this study case, is an ex•Soviet country of about 48 million citizens with 100 ethnic nationalities. Members of the Jewish Faith form one of those ethnic groups. Following the Russian revolution in 1989 and then the establishing of an independent Ukraine in 1991, the country descended into economic disaster with many consequent social problems.
