Local Sports Report -- September 23 Local Sports Report -- September 23 Posted by TBN On 09/22/2013 Local Sports Report with Buddy Long (Click Here) Griffins turnovers send Redskins to 0-3, Ravens dominate Texans for huge win at home!!!! Hello Sports Fans, I’m Buddy Long. And this is the Monday September 23rd edition of Southern Maryland Sports. Washington Redskins: Redskins drop to 0-3 with loss to Lions!!! On a day when it appeared the Washington Redskins would turn things around and claim their first win of the season, the turf at FedEx Field was rather unkind, sending a Robert Griffin III fumble into the hands of a Detroit defender, then taking away an apparent Aldrick Robinson touchdown. Griffin later threw an ill advised pass while on the run, that was eventually picked off. The end result was a 27-20 win for the Detroit Lions, thus ending a 21 game losing streak in the nations capital for the Lions, encompassing 74 years. Lions QB Matthew Stafford went 25-42 for 385 yards and 2 touchdowns. The game started off well for Washington as DeAngelo Hall intercepted a Stafford pass, returning it 17 yards for the first score of the game. Alfred Morris added a 30 yard TD scamper in the second quarter. But again, the Redskins secondary had a tough day with one of the leagues best receivers in Calvin Johnson, as well as Nate Burleson, both of which had 100 yard days. The Redskins now take their 0-3 record to the west coast to play the Oakland Raiders next Sunday, then have a bye week before the bulk of a most difficult schedule will begin, starting with a road trip to the division leading Dallas Cowboys. Baltimore Ravens: Ravens dominate Texans in Lewis and Reeds return to M&T Bank Stadium!!! Daryl Smith intercepted a Matt Schaub pass, taking it 37 yards for a score, thus igniting a rather quiet Baltimore Ravens crowd, and helping the Ravens to a 30-9 win Sunday over the Houston Texans at M&T Bank Stadium. Less than 2 minutes later, Tandon Doss took the ball 82 yards on a punt return for another Ravens score, all this happening on a day when the team would need to find some scoring answers while 3 time Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice was inactive due to a strained hip flexor. Bernard Pierce, replacing Rice Sunday, rushed for 65 yards, including 1 touchdown on the day. Quarterback Joe Flacco went 16-24 for 171 yards, helping the Ravens to avenge a 43-13 loss to the Texans 1 year ago. The Ravens, now 2-1 on the season, head to Buffalo Sunday to take on the Bills, the beginning of a 2 game road trip that will also see them go to Miami the following week.     OUTLOOK PLAYERS COACHES OPPONENTS REVIEW RECORDS HISTORY MEDIA THE HISTORY OF SMU FOOTBALL 1910s On the morning of Sept. 14, 1915, coach Ray Morrison held his first practice, thus marking the birth of the SMU football program. Morrison came to the school in June of 1915 when he became the coach of the University’s football, basketball, baseball and track teams, as well as an instructor of mathematics. A former All-Southern quarterback at Vanderbilt, Morrison immediately installed the passing game at SMU. A local sportswriter nicknamed the team “the Parsons” because the squad was composed primarily of theology students. SMU was a member of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which ruled that neither graduate nor transfer students were eligible to play. Therefore, the first SMU team consisted entirely of freshmen. The Mustangs played their first game Oct. 10, 1915, dropping a 43-0 decision to TCU in Fort Worth. SMU bounced back in its next game, its first at home, to defeat Hendrix College, 13-2.
