Kurzprofil Veeam Software (Veeam) entwickelt Systemmanagement-Lösungen für virtualisierte IT-Umgebungen. Wichtigste Plattform ist seit Gründung des Unternehmens im Jahr 2006 die des Marktführers VMware, deren „Pre- mier-Level Technology Alliance Partner“ Veeam ist. Die Schlüsselprodukte sind die Datensicherungslösung Veeam Backup and Replication, die Monitoring- und Berichtswerkzeuge Veeam Monitor und Reporter Enterprise, sowie das kostenlose Tool Veeam Business View, mit dessen Hilfe VMware-Umgebungen nach organisatorischen Kriterien statt nach rein technischen Gegebenheiten verwaltet werden können. Das eben- falls von Veeam stammende kostenlose Tool FastSCP wird von mehr als 100.000 VMware-Profis weltweit verwendet. Seit der Akquisition von nworks im Jahr 2008 gehören zu Veeams Pro- duktpalette auch Erweiterungen für die Systemmanagementumgebungen von Microsoft und HP. Mit ihrer Hilfe können Administratoren die Betriebs- und Leistungsdaten ihrer virtualisierten IT direkt im gewohnten Steuerung- sprogramm anzeigen. Das Unternehmen verfolgt einen schnellen Expansionskurs, der vor allem durch ein hohes Innovationstempo bei den Produkten und ein wachsendes Netz von Vertriebspartnern (derzeit mehr als 3.000 weltweit) gekennzeich- net ist. Die deutsche Niederlassung von Veeam ist seit Herbst 2009 in Düsseldorf ansässig. Von dort aus werden die deutschsprachigen Länder sowie der osteuropäische Wirtschaftsraum bedient. Bis dato hat Veeam weltweit bereits 6.000 Kunden gewonnen. Eine Zahl, die derzeit um monat- lich etwa 600 neue Anwender wächst. Der Hauptsitz des Softwareherstellers ist in Columbus, Ohio (USA), die Eu- ropäische Niederlassung ist in Reading bei London. Ein großer Teil des For- schungs- und Entwicklungsteams arbeitet in St. Petersburg. 2 2. Produkte Veeam Backup & Replication Backup & Replication ist Veeams erfolgreichstes Werkzeug für virtualis- ierte Server-Infrastrukturen unter VMware. In der neuen Version 4.1 un- terstützt die Datensicherungs- und Wiederherstellungslösung VMware vSphere 4 und nutzt deren technische Neuerungen für einen etwa 10- fachen Geschwindigkeitszuwachs bei inkrementellen Backups aus. Außer- dem können mit Backup & Replication virtuelle Maschinen unter ESX und ESXi repliziert werden. Veeam Backup & Replication wurde im Januar 2010 vom US-Fachportal SearchServerVirtualization.com zum besten Produkt des Jahres 2009 in der Kategorie „Backup and Storage“ gewählt. Es überwacht die Serverleistung sowie die Auslastung der Massenspeicher in einer virtualisierten Umge- bung und unterstützt bei der Identifikation von Problemen und ihrer Lösung. Die integrierten Trendberichte, Alarmfunktionen und Ka- pazitätsplanungstools helfen bei der Einhaltung von Service-Level- Agreements. Damit lassen sich die oft umfangreichen und komplexen Informationen über den Aufbau und die Veränderungen innerhalb virtueller Server-Umgebungen schnell und ein- fach zusammentragen und in anschauliche Berichte verwandeln. Ein automatischer Übertrag der Daten in eine Configuration Management Database (CMDB) ist ebenfalls möglich. Mit Reporter Enterprise lässt sich der Ressourcenverbrauch durch unkon- trolliert installierte virtuelle Maschinen im Griff halten. Das Tool 4 integriert mit VMware vCenter und unterstützt sowohl ESX als auch ESXi Server samt eigenständigen Hosts und der kostenlosen Version von ESXi. Mit ihm können VMware vSphere Infrastrukturen nach geschäftlichen Kriterien angezeigt und verwaltet werden. So kann zum Beispiel angezeigt werden, welcher Abteilung im Unternehmen welche virtuellen Maschinen zugeordnet sind und welche Hardware- und Speicher-Ressourcen sie ver- brauchen. Das erleichtert die Kommunikation zwischen IT-Abteilung und den Geschäftsbereichen und ermöglicht eine nachvollziehbare interne Abrechnung von Rechenkapazitäten. So können Administratoren auch ohne Detailkenntnisse über die virtualis- ierte Infrastruktur die Systeme überwachen und bei Problemen gezielt korrigierend eingreifen. Das nworks Management Pack bildet eine Brücke zwischen virtueller und physikalischer Welt und zeigt so die Zusammen- hänge übersichtlich auf. Es zeigt die Konfigurationsdaten, Kapazitäten, Topologie und Ereig- nisse aus VMware vCenter direkt im HP Operations Manager an und un- terstützt so ein reibungsloses Systemmanagement. Vertrieb & Lizenzmodell Veeam verkauft seine Lösungen ausschließlich indirekt über Vertrieb- spartner und einige ausgewählte Distributoren. Das Vertriebsteam von Veeam arbeitet eng mit den Partnern zusammen und berät potenzielle Anwender im Vorfeld der Investitionsentscheidung ausführlich und persönlich. Bei der Implementierung unterstützen Veeams System Engi- neers den Anwender und stehen als technische Ansprechpartner zur Ver- fügung. In Deutschland unterhält Veeam eine Niederlassung in Düsseldorf mit einem deutschsprachigen Vertriebs- und Support-Team. Veeam lizensiert die Produkte wie bei den meisten Virtualisierungsanbietern üblich nach Prozessor-Sockel. 5. Marktpotenzial Der Markt für Server-Virtualisierung steht, obgleich die Fachdiskussion um die Technologie schon einige Jahre andauert, noch am Anfang. Welt- weit betrachtet liegt der Virtualisierungsgrad bei Servern nach Schätzun- gen von Gartner bei derzeit bei etwa 18 Prozent. Wichtigster Anbieter ist mit großem Abstand VMware, deren Marktanteil bei 89% liegt. Die Man- agementlösungen von Veeam sind also schon heute den allermeisten Anwendern von Virtualisierung zugänglich. Gartner-Analyst Thomas Bittman erwartet für die nächsten Jahre ein be- sonders starkes Wachstum für virtualisierte Server-Umgebungen im Seg- ment der kleinen und mittelgroßen Unternehmen.
