Additional literature references treating Cuban Lepidoptera are also provided. The list is based primarily on literature records, although some collections were examined: the Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática collection, Havana, Cuba; the Museo Felipe Poey collection, University of Havana; the Fernando de Zayas private collection, Havana; and the United States National Museum collection, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC. One family, Schreckensteinidae, and 113 species constitute new records to the Cuban fauna. The world's literature is searched systematically, and it is intended that every work on Lepidoptera published after 1946 will be noticed here; omissions of papers more than 3 or 4 years old should be called to Dr. BELLINGER'S attention. Ind. I, p. 402, (1892). Griinberg, Seitz, Grossschm. d. Erde X, p. 391, (1914). Meest groote, sterke, ruige vlinders met bruine vleugelteekening. Palpen dik behaard, groot, vooruitstekend; zuiger niet ontwikkeld; oogen vrij klein; antennen tamelijk lang dubbel gekamd bij beide sexen. De pooten gewoonlijk met slechts kleine terminale paren sporen en sterk behaard. Het voorhoofd en de thorax in den regel sterk behaard. Het aderstelsel sterk, vrij constant; in den voorvleugel zijn de aderen la en lb niet met elkaar gevorkt, lc zeer zelden aanwezig; de eel klein met sterke discocellularis; de aderen 6 en 7 vanaf den bovenhoek, 9 en 10 steeds gesteeld. De achtervleugel met 2 anale aderen; 6 en 7 dicht bij de basis ontspringend; 8 gekromd en dikwijls 7 rakend of daarmede door een klein dwarsadertje verbonden, waardoor een praecostale eel ontstaat; accessorische adertjes doorgaans ontwikkeld. Frenulum afwezig. De rupsen zijn sterk behaard, met eigenaardige laterale haren aan de eerste segmenten en vaak ook met dorsale haarbosjes op de voorste segmenten. De haren beschermen door hunne mechanische en chemische werking de rups zoowel als de pop, want de haren worden in het spinsel ingeweven. De 99 vliegen zeer weinig en houden zich meest verborgen, terwijl de cTcT zeer bewegelijk kunnen zijn. Sterk sexueel dimorphisme komt ook bij deze familie voor, evenals sterk verschil in grootte bij exemplaren van dezelfde soort. Enkele soorten vliegen ook wel overdag. The Moravia study area in the Poodri Protected Area (18°03-13'E, 49°42-48'N, 200 m asL, Czech Republic) included three fragments of the primary floodplain forest (Rezavka, Polansky Les and Polanska Niva Natural Reserves, 300 ha in total) along a 20 km long section of the Odra River. The forest vegetation was dominated by Quercus, Ulmus, Tilia, Prunus and Fraxinus. The annual average temperature was 7-8.5°C, the annual average rainfall 600- 800 mm {SI). The Slovakia study area of 120 x 80 km between the Borska nizina Lowland and Hronska pahorkatina Hills (16°58'-18°38' E, 47°34-48' N, 100-350 m asL, Slovak Republic) included 15 study sites with lowland thermophillous oak and oak-hornbeam forests. The annual average temperature was 7-10°C, the annual average rainfall 550-900 mm (5*7). -

Data on host use by herbivorous insects in the tropics cannot be cross-referenced between the studies as only a fraction of the species can be formally identified. It is thus imperative for each study to include a wide range of plant and insect taxa, but this requirement has rarely been met because of logistical difficulties. 2. A novel approach using mass insect collecting and rearing by parataxonomists was applied to study the use of 59 species, 39 genera and 18 families of woody plants by 58 588 individuals and 1010 species of leaf-chewing insects in a lowland rainforest. 3. Most species had wide host plant ranges with reference to congeneric plants. The modal host range for a herbivore feeding on a particular genus (Ficus, Macaranga or Psychotria) included >90% of congeneric species studied. Only 3·7% of species feeding on these genera were monophagous. 4. Most herbivores were specialized with respect to confamilial plant genera, with modal host range of 1 genus from 9 studied in Euphorbiaceae and 13 in Rubiaceae. -
Rhamnus Species Buckthorn
Rhamnus species Buckthorn Introduction The genus Rhamnus contains approximately 200 species occurring primarily in temperate to tropical regions of eastern Asia and North America. Fifty eight species and 14 varieties occur nationwide in China. The largest populations occur in southwestern and southern China[3]. I. Rhamnus cathartica Common buckthorn pilose or nearly glabrous. The flowers are unisexual, dioecious, 4-merous and Taxonomy usually grow in clusters of 10 on the Order: Rhamnales twigs or from the leaf axil on the lower Family: Rhamnaceae part of the long branches. The pedicel Genus: Rhamnus L. is 2-4 mm long. Male flowers have Subgenus: Frangula (Mill.) S. F. petals, but the stamens are degenerate Gray and small. Flowers terminal spines. Scales of terminal appear May through June, and fruits buds are marginally hairy. Leaves are July through September[3]. papery, nearly opposite, alternate, or clustered in the twigs. The leaf blade Habitat and Distribution is elliptic, ovoid elliptic, or ovate, 3- R. cathartica occurs in valleys and 6.5 cm long and 1.5-3 cm wide, with hillside thickets at elevations of 1200- a shortly acuminate, acute or obtuse 1400 m in northern Xinjiang[3]. -
