Here are 15 quick tips and features that will have you surfing through your Hopper with stylish ease. Lose Your Remote? Press the LOCATE REMOTE button on the front panel of your Hopper receiver, and in a few seconds the remote will begin to beep to help you locate it. Binge-Watching is Awesome! It’s so easy to spend a day, night, or weekend just camped on your couch bingeing on a great show. The Hopper organizes DVR record- NEXT ings and On Demand programs by season and episode. When you finish an episode, EPISODE a pop-up will appear showing the next available episode to watch. It’s like you barely even have to move (OK, not sure that’s a good thing, but you get the idea.)! Never Change Inputs! Netflix fans will love the fact that you don’t have to use a different remote or switch inputs when using Netflix. Access Netflix from the app on the Main Menu, or simply go to Channel 370. And now, Netflix is automatically integrated into your search functionality for even easier browsing. (See Page 10.) Watch in One Room, Finish in Another. You can start a movie in the family room and finish it in the bedroom without missing a minute. Got a Question? We’ve Got an Answer. Help is always available via screen overlays to quickly learn more about Hopper’s many features. You can also get step-by- step tutorials by accessing the Help feature via the main menu. (See back cover.) PrimeTime Anytime. Your programs are always recorded, ready and waiting for you with PrimeTime Anytime. You’ll never miss the awards, big game, political debate— really anything that airs on ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX during primetime. Plus, you can use AutoHop to skip the commercials on select shows. (See Page 14.) Game Finder. You know that frustrating feeling when you can’t find what channel the game is on? You’ll never feel that way again with Game Finder. Use this app to get all the information on your favorite teams from every league and conference, all in one place. (See Page 21.) 4 Free Movies Anytime. You have a movie library filled with thousands of titles that are available to you whenever you want. And the best part is that most of these movies are free. Just access Videos On Demand. (See Page 18.) Change the Text Size. There’s no need to squint when trying to read the Guide. (See Page 8.) Don’t Get Caught in the Rain. Get real-time weather forecasts for your area (or anywhere in the country) while watching TV with The Weather Channel app. It’s the weather forecast built around your schedule. (See Page 21.) Over 500 Hours of Storage! Your storage capacity is beyond huge! You can store up to 500 hours of HD programming—that’s like 250 two-hour movies! Take It With You. With DISH Anywhere, you can literally watch live TV and access all of your recordings and Video On Demand anywhere. (See Page 19.) Find Something to Watch. Don’t know what to watch? Start with the HOME screen. Here you can find program recommendations and more. (SeePage 6.) Intuitive Search. It’s like the Hopper knows what you’re searching for before you start to search. The intuitive search functionality built into the Hopper lets you enter just a few letters before offering a list of accurate results. You can search by title, actor, sport, and more. (See Page 11.) Parental Controls. Rest assured that you are in complete control when it comes to setting viewing restrictions for programming and apps on the Hopper. (See Page 24.) 5 HOME The Home tab is all about you. It’s your starting point to quickly find what’s on now and to see what’s coming on later. Access the Home Screen To access the Home screen, press HOME on your remote. Content Tabs Content tabs help you quickly find the programming you’re searching for – from sports to shows and movies. 6 Info QUICK TIP Use SKIP FORWARD and SKIP BACK to navigate through the Menu, Home, Shows, Sports, and Movies. 7 GUIDE The Hopper’s high-definition Guide displays what’s airing on TV now and what’s coming up in the next nine days. The Guide provides full listings for all your channels. Access the Guide Press GUIDE on your remote control. Use CHANNEL UP and CHANNEL DOWN to navigate, or enter a channel number to go directly to that channel. Customize the Guide When in the Guide, simply press OPTIONS on your remote to customize your Guide experience: Create Favorite Channels Lists – Every member of your family can create their list of favorite channels so only those channels appear when browsing in the Guide. Only See Channels You Subscribe To – Display all DISH channels or just the channels you subscribe to with the All Subscribe option. Access Your Guide Settings – With the Guide Settings option, you can make text larger, change the order networks are listed, hide adult channels, and more. 8 Info 8 Guide Shortcuts You Need to Know 1 SKIP FORWARD on your remote skips forward 2½ hours at a time.* 2 When you press and hold SKIP FORWARD, it advances the guide 24 hours at a time.* 3 Press INFO to see a pop-up with more programming details. 4 For fast channel-surfing, press and hold CHANNEL UP or CHANNEL DOWN. 5 To record a program, press SELECT for recording options. 6 To return to Live TV, press BACK/LIVE TV. 7 When you see a “+” next to a channel, you have additional channel options to choose from. Press SELECT on your remote to expand and collapse those channels (for example, Channel 99 includes more than 70 channels of SiriusXM). 8 Make the font larger by pressing OPTIONS on your remote and selecting Guide Settings > Larger Text. *NOTE: This reflects when the Guide is set to the default font size of Small. Creating and Using Favorite Channels Lists 1 While in the guide, press OPTIONS and select Favorite Channels > Favorite Settings. 2 You can customize up to four lists. Start by selecting List 1 and editing the name of the list and the channels included by following the onscreen prompts. 3 Once you’ve established your Favorites Lists, you can select what lineup appears in the Guide by pressing OPTIONS on your remote when you are in the Guide. Choose between Classic and Modern themes to find the right colors QUICK TIP for reading the Guide on any TV. 9 MENU Info Consider the Menu as the control center of the Hopper. This is where you navigate through your content options, personalize your settings, manage your account, and more. First, let’s get you familiar with how your Hopper is set up. The top of the screen serves as your orientation guide. The gray tab shows what content category you are currently in. The middle of your screen is navigable space. Use your remote to highlight the feature you wish to access and press SELECT.     Reprinted with Permission from Law360 Dish Hopper Case: A Narrow Reading Of Aereo Law360, New York (February 04, 2015, 10:56 AM ET) -- James Dowd U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer promised that the high court’s holding in Aereo was limited. And at least one federal judge seems to agree. In one of the first opinions to apply Aereo, U.S. District Judge Dolly M. Gee of the Central District of California – in the case Fox Broadcasting Company et al. v. Dish Network LLC et al. – rejected Fox’s claim that Aereo applies to the Dish Network’s Hopper technology. The Andrea Weiss Jeffries Jan. 20 decision is one of several that may ultimately confine the impact of Aereo. Last year, after the Supreme Court issued its opinion, legal observers warned that Aereo threatened the legal status of online cloud computing and streaming services. Concerned commentators echoed Justice Antonin Scalia’s dissent, where he signaled frustration with the majority’s apparent disregard for the volitional conduct requirement for direct copyright infringement — a test that had been applied by all of the courts of appeals. He concluded that Elaine Zhong the majority created a “two-tier” version of the Copyright Act, “one part of which applies to ‘cable companies and their equivalents’ while the other governs everyone else.”[1] One commentator wrote that the “uncertainty created by the court seems bound to chill innovation.”[2] While the court’s ruling disrupted Aereo’s business — Aereo filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection just five months after the Supreme Court’s decision — Judge Gee in Fox rejected the notion that Aereo was “gamechanging” with respect to Dish’s Hopper products.

DISH NETWORK SUMMARY* Copyright / Preliminary Injunction The panel affirmed the district court’s denial of a broadcaster’s request for a preliminary injunction against a pay television provider’s products that skipped over commercials. The panel held that the district court did not abuse its discretion in holding that the broadcaster failed to demonstrate a likelihood of success on its copyright infringement and breach of contract claims regarding the television provider’s implementation of the commercial- skipping products. As to a direct copyright infringement claim, the record did not establish that the provider, rather than its customers, made copies of television programs for viewing. The broadcaster did not establish a likelihood of success on its claim of secondary infringement because, although it established a prima facie case of direct infringement by customers, the television provider showed that it was likely to succeed on its affirmative defense that the customers’ copying was a “fair use.” Applying a “very deferential” standard of review, the panel concluded that the district court did not abuse its discretion in denying a preliminary injunction based on the alleged contract breaches.
